The Arizona Cardinals say they've dropped their request for additional compensation in a proposed trade that would send offensive tackle L.J. Shelton to Buffalo for Bills tailback Travis Henry.

Tom Donahoe, the Bills' president and general manager, said recently one of the things holding up the deal was the Cardinals' demand that the Bills part with more than Henry. Henry requested a trade after losing the Bills' starting tailback job last season to Willis McGahee. . . .

i hope this doesnt mean they will still swap 2nd round picks. Straight up or no deal. There are plenty of good cheap RBs in the draft.

This isn't new information, PIZ. During the previous round of "he said/she saids", it was reported that the Cards were first to ask for more than just Henry, and the Bills then countered by asking for more than just Shelton. It went on to say that the Cards had dropped their initial demand, but it did not say that Buffalo had agreed to drop theirs. So that's where we are - at least publicly.

Bills want to swap #2's. Cards don't. That's the latest as we know it. Doesn't sound to me like there's been any movement recently.

Donahoe and many of us in Buffalo don't exactly see Shelton as being equivalent to Henry, for a few of the following reasons:

1. Both lost their starting job, but Shelton more due to poor performance and not getting along with the coaching staff (this is a red flag to people like Donahoe)
2. Henry is a pro-bowler, Shelton is not
3. Henry is cheaper, Shelton is moderately priced
4. Henry has a 1 yr deal, Shelton has 3 or 4 more
5. There is a moderate age difference
6. Henry is a warrior who can play injured, Shelton is not known as a warrior.

Yeah, but LTs are in short supply while there are plenty of RBs available right now. Also the shelf-life of a RB is much shorter than a LT. Straight up is the only way I see this trade happening due to the Cards having other options at RB in the draft and via other means.

EDIT: I do agree with the consensus of Bills fans though in that in the overall scheme of things, Henry is the much better player than Shelton. I can see how you think you might be getting ripped off.

Shelton having a three year deal is a good thing for Buffalo. If he hit the open market then he could probably command close to Jonas Jennings money.

And Henry has vowed to never play for Buffalo again while Shelton hasn't.

I agree a straight up deal is somewhat favorable for the Cards but since we have multiple options at RB theres no reason to give in to a 2nd round swap.

1. Both lost their starting job, but Shelton more due to poor performance and not getting along with the coaching staff (this is a red flag to people like Donahoe) Shelton lost it for being out of shape not poor performance. Once he got back into shape he became the starter once again - Favor - Dead Heat

2. Henry is a pro-bowler, Shelton is not Favor - Bills

3. Henry is cheaper, Shelton is moderately priced 3 mill for even an average Vet LT is not moderately priced it is excelent. And Henry wont be cheaper once he comes to terms to an extention Favor - Cards

4. Henry has a 1 yr deal, Shelton has 3 or 4 more Why is this a bad thing for the Bills. The Cards are the ones that will have to pony up a brand new contract and signing bonus that will be greater then Sheltons great deal that you get for 3 more years. Favor - Cards

5. There is a moderate age difference. Comparing ages between two different positions doesnt work. RB age faster then OL. Favor - Even

6. Henry is a warrior, Shelton is not known as a warrior. Shelton is just as much of a Warrior as Henry is, Shelton played on a broken ankle for 14 weeks in 2003. Favor - Even

You forget the most important thing. If Buffalo doesn't trade Henry, he walks away at the end of the year and Buffalo gets nothing. The longer they wait, the more difficult it will be to trade him.

1. Henry is in the last year of his deal. Buffalo will lose him after this season. Shelton has three years at a very reasonable left tackle price-- particularly when compared to the ridiculous contract given to an equally average Jonas Jennings.

2. There is a glut of RB's available. More supply than demand drives the price down. There are not a lot of OT's available. More demand than supply increases the price -- see again the silly Jennings contract.

3. An OT's NFL life is far longer than a RB's.

That's fine. We like Shelton a lot. Don't do the deal then. Many of us would rather keep Shelton. If you do get Shelton, within a year you'll be bragging how you got the better end of the deal.

And your item 6 is just wrong. Shelton plays through pain and injuries. The guy is tough.

If this trade fails, we will still have a player we like who will work hard and play anywhere on the oline he's asked to play.

Both GMs should be shot if the one for one trade falls through. This is a rare win-win trade with both teams getting good value.

Your not getting it...why would the Cardinals swap third rounders? They can get a RB somewhere else and still have a good LT for a couple more years and still be able to trade him.

LT's are much harder to find then RB's.

Well then we should just draft a RB in the draft and keep Shelton. We keep a cheap OL and still get to draft a rb in the draft. Sounds like a good deal for us. Face it you guys have no leverage.

Shelton played hurt most of the 2003 season and was perhaps the second best lineman. Also, LT (especially moderately priced) are hard to come by, RB are a plenty and have short life span.
