Redskins signal little interest; Cardinals more positive

By Mark Curnutte
The Cincinnati Enquirer

INDIANAPOLIS - Just as the horizon narrowed for the Bengals in their effort to trade disgruntled running back Corey Dillon, another team might have entered the picture.

A day after coach Marvin Lewis said the Bengals have not received any calls inquiring about Dillon, Washington coach Joe Gibbs all but dismissed the possibility of a Dillon trade to the Redskins. Washington had been one of three teams mentioned as likely Dillon suitors.

"We only have a certain number of dollars," Gibbs said. "It would depend on other positions."

Asked if he were interested in Dillon, Gibbs said, "I think (whom) we'd be interested in is something we'll keep to ourselves."

But, later Saturday, Arizona coach Dennis Green called Dillon "a fine player, who probably needs a change of scenery" and said the Cardinals would "explore any player who's available."

Green said the offense he runs needs a 1,000-yard rusher to work. The Cardinals already have Marcel Shipp and Emmitt Smith. Arizona's offensive coordinator is Alex Wood, who spent 2003 as Bengals wide receivers coach.

League insiders say the Dallas Cowboys are not interested in Dillon. Tampa Bay is most often referenced as the other team that seems like the best fit for a Dillon trade.

A trade still might occur on draft weekend, April 24-25, when a team in need of a running back might fail to land its top college choice or choices.

MORE DILLON: Jarrett Payton, the Miami (Fla.) running back and son of the late Walter Payton, said he remembers the day Dillon broke his father's single-game rushing record.

Dillon rushed for 278 yards on Oct. 22, 2000, breaking the 23-year-old record of 275 set by the Bears' Walter Payton in 1977.

"My dad always said records were made to be broken," said Jarrett Payton, forecasted to be an undrafted free agent. "He said it didn't bother him if the record was broken with class by a class guy."

RUDI OPTIONS: If the Bengals don't reach an agreement on a contract with Rudi Johnson, they have several choices of one-year tenders that would provide compensation should they allow the fourth-year tailback to leave as a restricted free agent.

A $628,000 tender gets the Bengals a fourth-round pick - the round in which Johnson was drafted. A $1.368 million tender gets the Bengals a first-round draft pick. And a $1.824 million tender gets them first- and third-round picks.

BACK SEARCH: The Bengals and Bears are two teams that have expressed interest in Michigan running back Chris Perry, Perry said. He had 1,674 rushing yards, 44 receptions and 20 total touchdowns in 2003.

The Bengals also have met with Tulane back Mewelde Moore, a polished receiver who had 915 rushing yards in 2003.

The Bengals also appear interested in Oregon State defensive tackle Dwan Edwards.

STRONG MAN: Hawaii defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga, a projected fifth-round pick who weighs 325 pounds, did 41 bench press repetitions at 225 pounds, three off the unofficial combine record of 44 by defensive tackle Leif Larson of UTEP in 2000.

BROWNS BITS: The Cleveland Browns won a coin flip Saturday to get the seventh overall draft pick over the Atlanta Falcons. Both teams finished 5-11 and had .539 strengths of schedule. There is no tiebreaker for draft order beyond strength of schedule.

Insiders say the Browns could draft one of two Miami (Fla.) players - tight end Kellen Winslow Jr., or safety Sean Taylor.

The Browns also have inquired about former Michigan quarterback Drew Henson, Butch Davis said. But the Browns coach also said he expects to enter training camp with Tim Couch and Kelly Holcomb on the roster.

Holcomb and Couch split time in a disappointing 2003 season, but Davis said he anticipates that a starter will be named before the opening of camp.

Hey, if they only want a 4th or lower for him, I'd pull the trigger. Eh, maybe a 5th or lower, but I wouldn't cry over a 4th. He's a quality back, and DG knows how to deal with guys like this and keep them producing. Only reason I wouldn't give up a 3rd is injury history.

Seriously, I doubt it would happen. I don't see any reason to replaced Shipp with another power RB.

Maybe Shipp wouldn't be the one to be replaced. Emmitt does have that expensive contract on his back.

I do like Shipp, but if you we to present both Ship and Dillion to me, and ask me to pick one, I would choose Dillion easily based soley on production.

The attitude though is definetly something that would worry me.

Did you see Dillon vs. the Cardinals? He gained something like 5 yards on 4 carries. (Then, of course, they brought Rudi in).

Forget about attitude/ Forget off-the-field. I didn't think Dillon looked that good the few times I saw him. I think he's overrated, may be over and that Shipp's better.

Corey Dillon overrated? Career stats say otherwise. I would definitely take Dillon over Shipp.

2003?

2003 Cincinnati Bengals 13 11 138 541 3.9

541 yards for a back with an attitude?

No thanks.

Rudy Johnson of the Bengals outplayed Dillon last year....even when Dillon was healthy.

Uh that is not fair he was hurt this year. When healthy he is a devistating runner.

Yes I like Rudi better but Rudi ain't coming free but Dillon is.
He can be had cheap. His attitude was based on playing in Cinci. take him out of Cinci and his attitude changes. I say get him - what are the odds a 4th round pick will develop anyway - not good.

Yeah...taking him out of Cincy, and putting him in AZ shoud do wonders for his attitude. ;)

No, Dennis Green has never been known to effectively handle players with attitudes before

Did the Bengals actually said they are asking for this years draft pick or next year? I'll give them this years 4th or 5th draft pick if we sign a couple of CB and DT.

No I know, I was just kidding.

You have to admit though that if you were Dillon, the prospect of going from the Bengals to the Cardinals would be just a little disheartening.

LOL Maybe you Cards fans need to change your attitudes ;) those were the old Cards (pre-DG). I think players will actually want to come here now. I think before DG trades for anyone he will talk to them first. If you play for DG you carry your own water or you are gone.

Does anyone know what Dillon's pay is ? Also it would probably have to be restuctured at the current levels, because he was franchised 2 years ago right ? I wonder if Cincy would take a 5th rounder for him ?

Two years left on his contract $3.3M this season and $3.85M next season. $3.3M is less than we're paying Emmitt...

Wow that is not bad at all !! Throw me in the lets take him it can not hurt group. Lets dump Emmitt and throw Dillon into the mix. Lets also see if he will take a salary cut down to 2 million a year. Offer a 5th rounder for him and see if the Bengals chomp at the bit. Dillon could have a possible Stephen Davis impact in the league next year ! Right now he is 29 and turn 30 in October. Emmitt is 35 I believe and also carries close to the same pay.

From Ben Maller's Rumors

If Dillon groused about playing for a losing team while in Cincinnatti, why would he be a good fit for Arizona. Tampa sounds like the place for him.

Why Stats are Overrated

Career stats say otherwise.
Here's the problems with stats.

Career stats in particular don't take into account the "what have you done for me lately" component.

A dude can rack up great numbers early in his career but then (due to injuries, fat contract, momma's cooking etc.) tail off in his production.

I have to go back to the old "eyeball theory." I watched Dillon play against us and in a couple of other games. He didn't play very well and it seemed to me that Corey is now in the Back Nine of his career.

Bringing him in to push Damien or Scobey for the #3 RB spot might not be a bad idea if he doesn't cost us more than a late round pick. But otherwise, what's his upside vs. his possible downside (i.e. attitude, falling production)?
