Hey Peter, here is a question for you. With the talk of Phoenix getting an MLS team, would the Sahuaros be in line to become that franchise or are they more of a club team? I dont know alot about soccer so any info would be nice. Also, I had heard that a few MLS teams were coming to the valley for training. Has this already passed?

Tyler,

The Sahuaros are an amateur team. They are a member of the USASA(US Adult Soccer Assoc). They are on the same level as PDL teams and are at the highest level of amateur soccer in the US.

As for MLS coming to the Valley, that would be a very long shot. But if MLS were to come here, the Sahuaros would not be a team that would 'move up'.

This year, 9 of the 16 MLS teams spent some time in Arizona for their preseason training. Some teams arrived in early February, while others came later and stayed thru mid-March.
There were lots of scrimmages and practices that were open to the public and the Sahuaros provided competition for several of the teams.
It's expected that teams will be back in AZ for 2011 preseason.

I'll be happy to answer any further soccer questions you may have.

The Arizona Sahuaros won their quarterfinal match vs Leon, a Phoenix based team by a score of 2-1.

Unfortunately, they lost in the semifinal to Barcelona of Tucson, ending their 5 game unbeaten streak in the Copa Alianza.

The team will now set its sights on the USASA Region IV championships and a berth in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. The event is in Sacramento this year, after being in Phoenix the past two years.
