Arizona State Basketball Thread 2009-2010

The Devils routed Western Illinois 87-35 in their first game and are leading Texas State 43-28 as the 2nd half just started.

Go Devils !!!

ASU started really sloppy tonight against Texas St, but they played a good 2nd half. The lack of a guy who can score inside and the lack of a guy who consistently beat his man of the dribble is going to kill ASU at times this year.

Trent Lockett looks like he's the real deal. In some ways he reminds me of Budinger, can jump out of the gym, good shooter, but not a lot of strength or left-right quickness.

It was terrific seeing Ty Abbott out there and draining 3's with confidence. His body looks a bit more cut up (as does Jerren Shipps) so thats nice to see. ASUs going to need him to put up maybe 15 points a night if they want to do much this year.

It also looks like Boateng worked really hard on his game over the offseason. He actually made a couple of moves in the post and his free throws look like they actually have a chance of going in. For a guy who had the moves of a telephone pole when he started here, he's come a long way.

I'm not expecting a lot this year. I do think this team can throw in a few pleasant surprises this year.

ASU has a good shot this year, the team has some flaws but the Pac-10 is going to be awful and the Devils have experience and a good PG to keep games in control.

I think they should definitely be competative in the PAC this year ... however, the PAC being down and a poor out of conference schedule could hurt them come selection time if they end up on the bubble

they'll need to find ways to win the close ones and their style will keep a lot of them in that range

Tonight's home game is practically empty... what gives?

game just ended at 11:40 , it cost money to go to for students, and business majors like me have accounting tomorrow at 8:00am tomorrow.

BUT WOW what a crazy finish. bring on duke! now we have a UofA type tourney builder where even if we lose to them, it helps us!

Wow EB was nuts in this game, 21/12, crazyness. Though I really dont hope ASU has to have him as their leading scorer in too many games, that would be bad news. No one else on the team did much of anything tonight, RK knocked down some 3's but that was about it. Abbotts still working himself back into shape, but we can't have games where him, Lockett and Walker all come up more or less empty in the points dept. The point guard play was also disappointing tonight, but its early and I was impressed w/ TCUs defense.

No its time for the Boat to exact his revenge on the school that didn't give him playing time! :p

Really though I hope ASU blows out San Francisco, stays close with Duke and then maybe upsets LSU in the consolation game.

TCU had a lot of veteran players so I knew that would not be an easy game for us. The shooting was much uglier than I expected though. That does seem to be a common trend in college basketball early this season. A lot of games, including Kansas-Memphis and UCLA-UCF, have been brickfests.

The problem with our shooting last night is that nobody could get open. For the most part we don't have anyone who could cause their zone D to collapse and open up our outside shooters. However, that will change if Boat continues to play like he did last night and/or Lockett and Walker start finishing their drives.

TCU was face-guarding the shooters and were willing to let Boateng go 1 on 1 inside. Notice Boateng dribbled for several seconds repeatedly backing his defender into the post without a TCU defender jumping down to attempt a steal? That's almost unheard of for a guy with Boateng's size and limited ballhandling especially when he's scoring at will. Almost as unheard of as a Herb Sendek team only attempting 13 three pointers. It was similar to what the Spurs did against the Suns when they let Amare go wild every playoff game but were hugging Raja, Nash, Marion, and Barbs on the perimeter no matter what taking away the 3 ball.

In games where defenses do this they need one of their slashers to step up and since Lockett/Walker were pretty awful the game was a nailbiter. They'll need one of those guys as the season goes on creating shots because Boateng won't be able to get away with a lot of those post moves against a Pac-10 defense.

The boat show has been both terrifying and wonderful, he still looks like a baby giraffe moving out there, but he's oddly effective. The bottom line is, for the most part the Pac is wide open and it should be fun to see how the local teams grow.

If someone had bet me as to whether he would ever top 20 points in his ASU career, I would've lost money betting against him. I thought he never had a chance to score that many points.

I would have as well. I still think he'll be at best a 12-8 type guy once the Pac-10 season starts, which would be just fine.

Dominating performance vs. San Francisco today. School record 18 3's. Kuksiks with a career high 27 points. Rudd was cleared and played the last 5 minutes or so. He only scored 2 points but it was on an absolutely amazing one-handed ally-oop.

Also come draft time, I have to think some NBA team will draft him at least in the second round.

If he comes in at 12/8 this year he will absoltuly get drafted with out a doubt...

If it is like 14/8 it may be in the high 2nd round... There is ALWAYS a team that will reach for a 6"11 athletic big that show SOME sign of basketball skill...

Good performance for the most part by ASU tonight. The lack of exepeirence, size and a go to guy hurt them, but ah well. Lockett can be a really good player down the road for ASU, seeing him and King next year slashing from opposite wings will be a lot of fun.

Tonight's game really impressed me as well. Lockett was. I wish he would have been able to stay in the game because he was making things happen on offense and the team needed that tonight. The defense was good as always, but better than I expected against such a great shooting, bigger team. Think we may have a bit of a surprise season here. I will probably make it out to the Nov. 30 game.

Nice blowout win for ASU over LSU today. LSU isnt a great team and the SEC isnt a great conference but its still a blowout over a major conference team.

With how young our team is, Ill take 3rd place in the preseason NIT behind Duke and UCon. If I remember correctly from au a few years ago, a good loss is better than a win...................
