With Ned Yost's retirement announcement, the Royals join the Giants and Padres as teams looking for a new manager. The Cubs are expected to part ways with Joe Maddon, while 4-5 other clubs could also make a change on the bench. Should be a busy October for managerial candidates.

Mike Matheny, special advisor to #Royals in player development, is viewed as a strong candidate to manage in Kansas City next year, following Ned Yost's retirement today -- although the ownership change introduces some uncertainty to process.

Dodgers bench coach Bob Geren is thought to be a managerial candidate for #SFGiants. Geren, formerly crosstown A’s manager, has strong ties to Giants baseball prez Farhan Zaidi from LA/Oak. Geren has somewhat lesser links to Mets (coach there) and SD (top HS player there) too

With the news on Maddon and Hurdle today, the list of open managerial jobs now consists of the Giants, Padres, Pirates, Cubs and Royals. Some speculation more could be added to the list ... Phillies? Mets?

Maddon’s timing for change is very good. Padres and possibly Phillies (if they have an opening) are two teams with owners who badly want to win and won’t let $ get in the way. Philly isn’t open yet but looks like the best fit for the Hazleton, Pa. product

I would be very happy if the Dbacks were aggressive and picked him up. The guy has showed potential and experience to take teams to the next level. He would certainly make the dbacks a contender

I am guessing Padres...seems like a natural fit for SoCal

Sources: Angels will be in on Maddon. No word of official contact, but they are interested. Theo is right: Could be bidding war for Joe.
