Mets haven’t said when their organizational meeting is beyond that it’s this week. But Callaway won’t be there. And that may be telling. Tho the Mets became the 4th team to rally from 10 games under .500 in 1st half and go 20 over in 2nd, chances for a Mickey return seem remote.

One name I've heard mentioned a couple times in regard to some of the current managerial/coaching openings is former Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. The 57-year-old Gibbons is said to be seeking a return to the dugout, either as a manager or bench coach.

#Padres expected to hire a manager with ⁦‪@MLB‬⁩ managerial experience, according to multiple people I spoke with this week. One option: Buck Showalter worked with A.J. Preller in Texas and managed Manny Machado (with considerable success) in Baltimore. ⁦‪@MLBNetwork‬⁩

Beltrán’s time with #Mets was not always smooth. Owner Fred Wilpon told The New Yorker he was a “schmuck” for signing Beltrán based upon his big 2004 postseason. Beltrán also differed with ownership over his decision to undergo knee surgery in 2010 and other issues.

That said, Beltran would be a fascinating candidate. Presumably more affordable than a Girardi or Maddon with Callaway under contract for one more year. Popularity and presence also would create instant, positive buzz for a franchise sensitive to public perception.

Name to watch if #Mets fire Callaway: Carlos Beltrán. Bi-lingual. Strong communicator. Played for #Mets from 2005 to ‘11. Interviewed for #Yankees’ job that went to Boone. One Mets exec, Allard Baird, was his GM with #Royals. Another, Omar Minaya, signed him when he was NYM GM.

Mets are believed to want hitting coach Chili Davis back. Alonso, McNeil, Rosario all thrived. And pitching coach Phil Regan can likely stay if he wants to considering how he did, as well. At 82, he was also excellent.

Riggleman is a real pro and knows his X’s and O’s as well as anyone. The feeling is, though, they’d want to have the bench coach job open until there’s a new manager. #mets
