I feel for Melton being demoted to #4 if this happens (if he can't beat out SMB), and don't love Elijah Jones basically being considered a wasted pick at that point, but we have an out on Murphy-Bunting's contract in 2026 and he could be an easy cap casualty for us.
I think that is harsh words, Solar. I thought Melton showed promise late last season, and we have no idea what Elijah Jones can do. I liked him in the draft, and obviously Gannon has plans with him. That is not to say that I don’t agree with your overall point, though. I also hope that they sign Samuel. You can never have enough quality.

I have a hard time criticizing any secondary selections when the HC has a track record of being the best DB coach in the league. I will at least give benefit of doubt until proven otherwise

Yep. No call to write Melton off yet. That said, he needs to step up and start this year, or that's a waste of a 2nd-round pick. I would not sign a veteran CB at this point. He needs to play, and needs to be starting. No sense blocking his path to doing so.

I'm surprised about the apprehension from people here. Murphy-Bunting really doesn't have any business being a #1 CB, not even really a #2. Williams is good in the slot. I view Samuel as an upgrade.

MB’s contract would be very costly to cut. Won’t happen.

OK. Having spent too much time looking at the Cardinals CB room, I think I understand why they would sign a FA CB or draft one high (ala Will Johnson).

Wouldn’t be my first choice but would provide leadership. Despite liking physical play he is not a good tackler. He’s not a true ballhawk either. He’s fairly decent in coverage. I suspect he’d be overpriced.
He'll be a good match for out safeties, who have the opposite profile.

I'm just saying that if Asante Samuel Jr. gets signed, by default Melton is going to be pushed down the depth chart. Same with EJ. Williams isn't going anywhere and will stay at the slot, so it would leave one starting role for Melton/SMB/EJ to battle for. The next guys up go to #4/5 in the room.

I would like melton asante playin the outside and garret williams in the slot
Sterling thomad the fourth cb, can also give depth at safety and full time special teams
Sean murphy Burting traded

How so? Prohibitive starters in 2025 are Melton and ST5 with Williams in the slot. SMB is the seventh DB (rabbit or Thompson come in for dime sets) and Moore is developmental special teamer.

I get making an investment in hedging Clark’s development, but adding resources you expect to contribute in year one or two seems excessive.

SMB $10 million cap number in 2025. So good.

Having looked into it, the CB room gets much smaller starting next off-season. SMB can get cut to save 7.25 mil. STV will be a UFA. Essentially frees up the CB1 and CB2 roles with Williams still under contract for the CB3 spt. I don't think the Cards are really invested in Clark and that leaves Melton and Jones as the only viable CB1 and CB2 options.

Or,...I dunno, maybe SMB for depth??
It's not like we don't need extra corners for dime and prevent, umbrella, etc..or injuries... even if a starter is only out a game or two, we don't want an absolute liability in the game to cover for him

Though some might say that's exactly what SMB is... he may hold it together better in spot duty...when he has not been scouted...?

Over 100% snap share? They should call him The Glitch in the Matrix.

Just posting tables doesn't mean anything without providing some analysis of what you see.

I'm hoping we keep STV.
Dude started his career as a walk on and earned starter snaps...even if it was with "us" that says a ton about his determination and effort..and he isn't horrible.
Obviously I would prefer a DB room where he is CB 4 and working to get on the field... but at this point I don't believe the redbirds are the only team he would get meaningful snaps with

I am looking at the lack of WR production vs Samuel in the last 2 years.

TARGETS AND YARDS.

Clear enough?
