You are doing great job by the way (better than me) but just curious.

Actually - I have a Tanita scale that calibrates your body fat %.

I started at 240 # w/ 34% body fat   which equates to 81.6 pounds of body fat.
(240 x .34 = 81.6) Lean muscle mass (muscle, water, bones, etc) = Body weight 240 - body fat (BF) 81.6 = 158.4 LMM

Right now, I am at 234 w/ 31.5 % BF  which equates to 73.7 # BF & 160.3 LMM.

I am down a total of 6 pounds. I have lost 7.9 pounds of fat per the BF composition readings, but I have only lost 6 pounds total - so I have gained 1.9 in lean muscle mass.

If you have any questions - let me know!!!

Those Tanita's are a crock of bull hockey.

I have lost 10.5 pounds total so far & it states my BF % has risen by 6%.

I think they are accurate in the wieght, but BF is not accurate at all.

I found out that if you get on it right after you take a shower - that it can drastically screw up your readings.

I take mine first thing in the AM after taking my first wiz.

It's been ok consistent-wise. If I wiegh myself at the end of the day - it shows a different range.

Anywho, that's how it's worked for me.

Make sure you have your inputs correct - age, sex, height, etc. My daughter was hitting buttons & changed the sex to female & I was like at 38-42 % BF but then I changed it back & it has been more consistent....

Dr. Atkins was Obese at death

NEW YORK - Dr. Robert Atkins, whose popular diet stresses protein-rich meat and cheese over carbohydrates, weighed 258 pounds at his death and had a history of heart disease, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

Atkins died last April at age 72 after being injured in a fall on an icy street.

Before his death, he had suffered a heart attack, congestive heart failure and hypertension, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing a report by the city medical examiner.

At 258 pounds, the 6-foot-tall Atkins would have qualified as obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (news - web sites)'s body-mass index calculator.

Diet is one potential factor in heart disease, but infections also can contribute to it.

I checked out the scale. Its looks pretty cool for the information it gives you.

One thing. How do you come up with the BF number initially? Does it have to be input into the scale? Does the scale figure this for you? The web site I saw it on didn't have comprehensive instructions.

I suppose if the BF number is or isn't accurate may not be important to me. But, just to be able to track it would be good.

It is automatic on the scale. Supposedly a slight electrical impulse is shot through your body when you stand on the scale. Thus, you have to be barefoot. And no you can't feel it.

It gives you your weight, then your BF, then a little bar blinks that tells you that you are a fat ass.

Last time I was in NYC, I was at this resturant and they had a scale that said, "Get off me, FAT ASS" when you stood on it. I always wanted to put one in my mother in laws house :)

On ABC-15 tonight at 6pm they will be discussing the late Dr. Atkins and mentioned that there is some controversy over how he died. Just an FYI for you Atkins guys/gals.

Atkins was obese, suffered heart disease, report says

Associated Press
Feb. 10, 2004 08:00 AM

NEW YORK -
Dr.

At 258 pounds, the 6-foot-tall Atkins would have qualified as obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's body-mass index calculator.

Diet is one potential factor in heart disease, but infections also can contribute to it.

Stuart Trager, chairman of the Atkins Physicians Council in New York, told the Journal that Atkins' heart disease stemmed from cardiomyopathy, a condition thought to result from a viral infection.

Atkins' weight was due to bloating associated with his condition, and he had been much slimmer during most of his life, Trager said.

The medical examiner's report was given to the Journal by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a group that advocates vegetarianism. The medical examiner's office told the Journal that the report had been sent to the group in error.

There was no immediate response Tuesday to a call seeking additional comment from the medical examiner's office.

The diet guru's widow, Veronica Atkins, was outraged that the report had been made public.

"I have been assured by my husband's physicians that my husband's health problems late in life were completely unrelated to his diet or any diet," she told the Journal.

Last month, Veronica Atkins demanded an apology from Mayor Michael Bloomberg after Bloomberg called her late husband "fat."

In April 2002, Atkins issued a statement saying he was recovering from cardiac arrest related to a heart infection he had suffered from "for a few years." He said it was "in no way related to diet."

I seem to do the same thing. Some weeks lose and some weeks just maintain. Its frustrating.

Keep up the good work.

I was at 231 Sat morn at the gym - then today was 234

OK - last week we (me & the bro) are doing our normal workout regime for legs - mind you this is our 5th week of training & both me & the bro have seen great results so far.

Anyways, he starts talking to "MrPuffyGuy-who-thinks-he-is-huge-but-the-only-reason-he-is-big-is-because-he-sticks-his-chest-out" - I'll call him workout Nazi (WON) from here on out.

The guy is a very nice guy, but he's been there for 2 years & he still looks the same. (OK - we've been going 2 years too, but I just used to go around haphazardly during my workouts, but since our new "program" started, there is definite result-age - not to mention Joel has dropped an impressive 50 spot in the past year)

So anyways, WON sees us doing squats & comes over & says we're doing it wrong. He takes off a hundred pounds & grabs the bro & throws him on the Smith machine & yells "GO FOR IT! SQUAT LIKE YOU WANT IT!!!!!! YOUR HEEL MUST TOUCH YOUR ASS!!!!!!!!!!" Before when we'd squat, we'd go down, but not that far down & used a higher weight...

So the bro goes down & WON grabs him from behind like a reverse bear hug & holds him & pulls him down until his ass is hitting his heels & then he pulls him up & yells "ONE!" Then he lets him go & yells "GIMME A DOZEN MORE JUST LIKE THAT!!!"

The bro does an admirable job & then WON yells "NEXT!" & grabs me & throws me into the Smith machine. He does the same bear hug to me & yells "FEEL THE BURN!" "DON'T BE A PU**Y. YOU'RE BROTHER KICKED YOUR ASS" - so I complete my squat sets with a burn that I never felt before. SO my hammies & quads are on fire now....

...and I go on to the leg press machine. I am starting my first rep & WON comes over & yells "THERE'S TOO MUCH WEIGHT ON THERE! YOU'LL KILL YOURSELF" so he takes 2 plates off each side and yells "LET's SEE A FLUID MOTION. NO MORE 4 COUNTS - I WANT A 2 COUNT - NO LOCKING KNEES AT THE TOP. UP-DOWN-UP-DOWN! INHALE WHEN IT'S COMING DOWN! EXHALE WHEN THE WEIGHT IS GOING UP!"

So I complete my first set of 12 reps in like 12 seconds - then the bro gets on the machine & WON repeats his tirade. When he's through, he yells to me "GET IN THERE! GIMME A GOOD SET THIS TIME!" So I complete my set & then do 2 more. I think I tore a hammie on set #4, rep # 6....but WON yelled at me for slacking.

When we are done with our leg presses, we hobble over to the calf section on the other side of the gym - out of sight of WON - & start doing calf exercises. When we're more than 1/2 way through our sets, WON walks over - nay sprints over - & yells "ARE WE READY FOR SOME CALVES!"

At this time, my calves are solid as a rock. He throws the bro on the donkey calf & yells "SUPERSET! GIMME 30 REPS!!!" After 30 reps he grabs the bro & puts him on the calf press & yells "GIMME 30 MORE!" & when he was done with that - he yelled "CALF RAISES!" & put him on the calf raise machine.

While all this was going on, he grabbed me & started my "routine" with me. After 4 "Supersets" of calves & my regular sets, my calves were torched.

I could hardly walk Friday from the hammies, quads, & calf inferno.

Needless to say I am looking forward to my next leg workout! Thanks Work Out Nazi for the help!!!

Dammit - I spit coffe on mt keyboard. The only thing funnier was that this was actually true. Neil (WON) "recruited" a guy named Chris several months ago. They trained every day together. Chris is pretty ripped now. Chris was sick last week. WON I guess doesn't like to workout alone. He torched me. Leg workout was on Thursday. My hammies still feel like they are going to burst.

Getting up out of bed is the hardest thing to do. When the alarm goes off at 4:45 AM, I know I have no more than 2 snoozes before it's up & at 'em.

Once I get to the gym it's not bad at all. I just think that if I didn't get my lazt ass out of bed, that I'll continue to look like the lazy fat ass that I was & will not look like the person I want to be.
