I really don't understand what the ASU defense is trying to do. Most of the time it looked like 4 down lineman with 3 linebackers (or 2 and a safety) about 10 yards back and standing practically right next to eachother in the middle. UCLA ate this up.
And on that 3rd and 29 play, that UCLA converted. Our corner was way overmatched and out on an island all by himself with no help. There should have been a safety covering over the top. I just don't get it.
I don't even think Bray knows what to do. They play base cover 2 against an option running team, I can't imagine any competent DC to ever run that type of defense against an option team, it's basically inviting the team to run all over you. On the 3rd and 29, I would have to watch it again, but it looked like cover 0 with no safety over the top, and I don't remember an all out blitz, so I have no idea what they were trying to do. It shows the horrible coaching on that play, the CB was in good position, but then he turns his head around and looks away from the WR, so all he had to do was a little hitch and he was wide open. Had the CB looked 'to' the WR rather than away, he would've seen the hitch and been able to make a play on it, horrible play and bad coaching.
Erickson brought in some decent talent over the years, but the entire coaching staff needs an overhaul. Theres no imagination anywhere, and their 1 page playbooks are getting really old. Everything is telegraphed, and it's way too easy to know what's coming next. If Erickson stays for another year, he needs to get rid of Bray immediately, he has no idea how to attack opposing offenses with any aggression whatsoever, and he never ever makes any adjustments, it's pathetic.
