Ok since Warner is most likely retiring (pending a surprise on Friday) who should we look at bringing in as the backup for next year? Somebody who will compete and maybe even beat out ML or somebody who is okay with the 2nd string and just anoint ML the starter but have somebody there in case of injury?

I see us going the cheap backup QB way since we have so many other needs to address as well a lot of $$ tied into ML at this point. Some names out there?
David Carr, Daunte Culpepper, Charlie Batch, Kyle Boller….any of these could probably be had to fairly cheap. Do I like any of these names? No. :bang:

I hope Rod Graves does everything he can to sign Chad Pennington after FA starts.

I keep seeing Pennington's name being mentioned, but I thought his career was over (after the injury this year). Did something change with him?

I don't know but we'd be getting a QB with high football IQ and a mentor for Leinart.

I believe he will go somewhere where they have a opening at the starter position (Buffalo, STL). Again, I think we need to bring in someone who is not going to challenge for the starting position but rather be a compliment to ML. Maybe Bulger if he is ready to accept a backup role?

Don't be surprised if it's Charlie Batch. He's a Whiz guy, he wouldn't come in and make noise about starting but he'd be okay in a pinch (as he was in Pittsburgh) and he's not going to demand a lot of money.

He's not a sexy name because he's got no upside--he's never going to start for us and be "the answer," but he's the kind of guy you need on your roster.

If the Cards go that route (with Batch or someone else), I think you go out and hope you can find a guy like we did in Palko last year--late in the draft (or UDFA) -- that has some skills and lots of potential as your #3.

Pennington or Bulger.

And a project QB in the late rounds.

or Donovan...oh that's already been beaten to death.

Remember, we can't sign anyone until someone signs one of our players due to finishing in the Top 8.

I think that Charlie Batch loves living in Pittsburgh. I think that's where he's from. I'm not sure why he'd leave. Why wouldn't Pittsburgh want him as their #3? I'm not sure that Batch is really that much of an upgrade over St. Pierre (and I say that liking Charlie Batch).

I personally like Carr at Fresno and would like to see him and Leinart compete for job. I think Matt will be able to do the job with an improved running game. Hell I would like to see Plummer with these receivers.

Chris Redman Falcons is an UFA has started and done well. Additionally Charlid Batch is also an UFA. Redman is 32 years of age while Batch is 36.

Good points. Batch may never really hit the market, and if he does, maybe he'll just retire rather than leave Pittsburgh.

I'd take a look at Bulger or Pennington. I think it's ridiculous to anoint Leinart as the starter, make him earn it.

No thank you to Batch. Not unless you want Dave Brown back.

Byron Leftwich and a qb will almost definitely be drafted. Maybe Colt McCoy, the WVU kid, or Lefevour in the 4th.

Cbus, did you see Leftwich play with the Bucs this year? No one has a slower release or less touch on his passes that Big Byron. He looked awful.

i saw him and he did look bad but i'll put alot of that on what he had around him. When he started the season, that was a horrible group of offensive players. He's always had that slow release and i only like him for a backup for a couple of years. At least he's had some success and knows how to play. I don't think there's too much out there anyway.

Trying to think of some younger backup who may become available:

Kellen Clemens
Derek Anderson

that may be about it.

I understand. I actually kind of like Andrew Walter if he kept himself in playing shape.

Watching Leftwich (of whom I used to be a fan) this year made me think of seeing passers in video games. Every time he threw he took this huge step forward and fired the ball out at 100%. That's not the coaching staff; that's just Byron Leftwich.
