Lions | Gary Knows Offense - from www.KFFL.com
Tue, 2 Sep 2003 15:01:30 -0700

Curt Sylvester, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions RB Olandis Gary worked individually Monday, Sept. 1 with the assistant coaches and quarterbacks on the basics - taking handoffs, for instance. With another four days of practice, however, Gary said he can see himself carrying the ball Sunday, Sept. 7 in the Lions' season opener against the Arizona Cardinals. "I don't think it would be tough," he said. "I know the offense pretty good. I ran it in Denver for four years, so that gives me an advantage there. It's just a couple of wrinkles, idiosyncrasies of the offense I need to hone in on. Other than that, I pretty much know the basics."

I was hoping since it was his first game with the new team that he might be confused and not know the offense. I was hoping he'd run into blockers and make the wrong move.

Well, the mission for this week is to stop Gary.

I'm hoping his rookie year was a fluke.

Honestly...what do you want(expect) them(the Lions) to say? I think that he will only have 3 or 4 practices at most will still be our advantage. My feeling is it will still be RB by committee...Gary is a good back but so was Stewart...either way we need to get pressure on Harrington...Just win Cards...just win...

The plays GAry will be in for will be very basic, very "bread and butter" if you will. If the Lions can beat us on those plays it's because they deserve to--it means that man for man they've got us outmatched. I don't think that's the case and I don't think Gary will be a big factor in the game (although I do think he'll be great for the Lions starting in about week 3).

The guy I am seriously concerned about it Bryson. The guy is capable of taking it to the house every play. He is FAST.

Trust me- I think that the odds are against Gary being a huge factor in the offensive game plan for the Lions this week. He certainly is doing well with his decoy duties, but I don't think that the defensive schemes that are planned this week will include Gary as being the top person on the Lions personnel chart for our defense to contend with. What I think that Mac will do is stem the line quite a bit and possibly run some stunts and blitzes that will confuse the young qb. Moocher will figure it out by half, therefore Mac will need to be on his toes if he wants to take the bone away from the dogs.

One of the most important aspects of a running back are his abilities to block and pick up blitz. How familiar Gary will be with the Lions blocking schemes remains to be seen. Harrington was a 50% passer last year. If we throw the kitchen sink at the Lions, we will get the turnovers or at least force punts. Does anyone else see Fisher having a big day?

I think this game will be a war between two up & coming football teams. Our mission for the game must be to play sound fundamental football across the board.

Stopping Gary is part of the equation, but containing Charley Big Play and Harrington is equally important. And most important of all is to get after people on defense - it's the team's strong point and (hopefully) our newly defined "signature."

Plus - one difference between the 2 teams in preseason is that Detroit has been mistake-prone while the Cardinals have played mistake-free.

Detroit's defense matches up with our offense. Putting offensive points against these guys will be tough, but one area of vulnerability is that they're woefully thin at DB. We may be able to exploit this weakness by throwing a lot of multiple-receiver sets against them to create favorable matchups.

Finally, I think we're deeper overall than they are - so if we can establish a lead or even stay close by the 4th quarter, we should have a physical edge late in the game.
