Hey Obama, Phoenix Suns owners need some stimulus too
By Phoenix Stan

President Obama touched down in Phoenix this afternoon just hours after signing the massive $790 billion stimulus package. While the Hoopster-in-Chief is here in town for some policy speech on housing foreclosures or something, I am hoping our team's chief executive can grab a few minutes of his time to lobby for a little fiscal love too.

The Phoenix Suns are currently sitting with the 8th highest payroll at $75m this season and are looking at paying about $4m extra for being over the $71m luxury tax line.

Next season the Suns currently have under contract 10 players whose salaries total $76m, and that doesn't include Grant Hill or the other two players the team needs to have on the roster to meet the mandated minimum number of 13 players. That means you are looking at about an $80m payroll.

That's for a season in which it is widely anticipated that the luxury tax line will be lower than it is now. The Suns, if they make no moves, will be looking at a luxury tax bill that would easily be $10m.

What do you think the Suns ownership group -- in this economic climate, facing an almost certain decline in season ticket sales and sponsorship revenue -- is going to do about that? Would you want to pay $10m extra in tax money that goes directly into the pockets of franchise owners who are below the line for a team that has almost no chance of competing for a championship?

I didn't think so.

That brings us to Thursday's trade deadline and Leandro Barbosa. With it looking more and more likely that the Suns will hang on to Amare for the rest of this season, Leandro becomes the one expendable asset on the roster. A guy whose contract is a reasonable $6-$7m per year for the next 3 years. A guy who is coming into his own as a basketball player.

It is my understanding that the discussions are underway to send our Brazilian Blur to Memphis, a team with only $52m on the books which allows them to take The Blur and not have to send back any players at all. You heard that right. We could trade Leandro for a 2nd round pick and that's exactly what might happen.

that would really suck and I think its very likely to happen.
We should at least get Conley or Lowry AND two draft picks.

I wish didn't even open this thread. This almost ruins my day.

Thanks Sarver...for being the biggest penny pinching, douche ever in NBA history.

I mean..at this point. I understand. The economy is bad. Who is trying to pay 10 mil out of their pockets?? Any of us?? Nope.

Do what you gotta do. Just keep Amare.

If it is Amare or Barbosa, trade Barbosa.

Hi, I'm calling on behalf of the Phoenix Suns and my boss says we won't pay luxury tax so I was wondering if you would like to pick any of our players not named Nash? Please call back because we are very desperate here and we have only 1 first round draft pick left from the last time we did this. Thanks, you can reach me at my number 555-kerr.

At least league rules forbid the Suns from trading their 2009 draft pick. They have to pick somebody.

I thought Sarver already came out on the radio and said he wasn't going to make a trade this season for financial reasons. He did say if they weren't in contention next year for a championship, he would.

I don't see him trading Barbosa, especially since we are back to run and gun. I don't see any trades happening with the Suns this deadline. I would be shocked if there is any trades from the Suns.

I dont mind the soft cap, even as a Lakers fan, as the extra money goes right to teams with less financial capabilities.

WTF? Why do you even buy a NBA team if you can't make bread? I understand he is hurt by the economy but this kind of stuff is total BS.

I won't get to irritated until it actually goes down but the fact thats it even speculated is stupid.

Couldn't we at least trade for a young rook or a future 1st round pick? Why do we have to get NOTHING in return. Such BS.

Its making me hate the NBA. There should be a rule about this.

NBA renaissance my ass.....

Who is Gambo to knock down anything?

Anyway, this rumor is way too unlikely to happen. Hes one of the few young pieces this team has and has a great contract. Of course were not going to give him away just for a 2nd rounder. We can very well get a late 1st for him.

Someone named "Phoenix Stan" has written "It is my understanding that the discussions are underway..."?

I've got pocket lint with more credibility.
