My read on Barnes is that he got playing time last year dispite his bad shooting becuase of his defense, ability to score on the break, and rebounding. The "poor man's Shawn Marion" seems to be his profile.

What we don't know is how well he handles "catch and shoot". With Nash, the open looks will be there. But he has to just "do it" for us to feel satisfied.

The catch and shoot with nash is not a problem as nash delivers the ball in the right spot. WHen the PG passes the bass accurately so you dont have to move your feet(and check to see if your standing on the line after moving), the shots will be taken under less defensive pressure. this is key to the rotation of the ball quickly to the open shooter. Nash is a master, no one else int he NBA can touch his consistently in delivering the ball quickly and accurately. This is why I have an expectation of Barnes shooting better than he did with B. Davis or Monte Ellis dishing. When you get the ball right where you want it and you dont have to adjust your body to shoot, the defensive pressure will be less.

In watching highight clips you can only get a few things, but they are interesting.

1. Matt finishes well in traffic. If anything, he seems more inclined to go into the tall timber better than Marion who always avoided contact. He may not go quite as high as Shawn, but he really can fly. He is strong enough that small bumps doesn't seem to throw him off the way Barbosa gets effected. Mostly they showed him on the break, but he looks to do well on the alley oop as well.

2. Banres has alternative shots. In clips he shows a short hook, a finger roll, a floater, and a running bank shot. Not clip will show the misses, but its not Barbosa "all or nothing" when going inside.

3. Barenes has moves in traffic. The clips don't show many stright drives to the basket, but do show some good moves in traffic as he works his way to the basket. He has a very good spin move that opens up dunks.

4. Barnes shows good form on his shot. They only show catch and shoot (suggestive in and of itself), but he has a very smooth form and no hesitation when getting the ball on drive and kick plays.

The clips don't show if he has a quick first step, but seems to be comfortable dribbling in traffic. On offense he looks to be better than Marion who has an ugly jump shot that defyed adjustment.

Barnes mechanics have been the subject of some criticism. the rub is that he doesnt follow through naturally. He doest extend his arms all the way on his release, I can see that higher res game video not the low res UTUBE stuff. I really dont care about his mechaics if he makes 40% of his 3's, but this has been the reason attributed to his shooting inconsistencies.

Thanks for the videos guys but, unfortunately they confirmed what I thought - that my images of him were on fastbreaks, not in the half-court. But I was pleasantly surprised to see that he did have some moves in the paint and he will drive if he has an open enough lane.

His 3 point form isn't nearly as bad as Shawn's but it's not a thing of beauty either. The best thing I can say about it is that he doesn't hesitate when he's open - at least in the highlight shots.

I'm not sure if this got overlooked, Barnes has 2 assists per game in his stats. That is a surprisingly good figure, considering he averaged 20 minutes per game, playing alongside the ball dominating Baron Davis and Monta Ellis, and, never given the ball-handling duty.

I'm sure u guys know that both Marion and Barbosa r in just mid 2.X with much more PT, even Hill, one of the best passing SF, is 2.9 in 31mpg. Starting Barnes, we wouldn't be missing Hill's assists.

I couldn't find video proof but my guess is he is not bad relaying the ball in perimeter, such as, when himself is not wide open, quickly throw the ball to next open shooter. And, when blocked in driving, he can find open man in driving, which Barbosa is poor of.

First video reminds me of Marion. Dunks left handed and shoots right, like Westphal.

I wasn't aware of his follow through issue. You would think this is a correctable error, but maybe not. BTW, weird form does not stop a guy from being effective. Look at Barbosa's shot and you always wonder how it goes in. What makes poor form an issue is that it is hard to fix when it stops working.
