Don't re-sign him.

Sign someone else.

Good job getting torched today Barrett.

He could have had an Interception on the last play...but he was too much of an idiot to make the INT!!!

It's hard to believe that a guy like Barrett that went from a good third down back and maybe even a second, could have gotten this bad this quick. Right now he would be lucky to be a nickel back. It's like he just lost every bit of his balls and talent this year. I don't know what happened to him. He just looks scared now.

I would think he has just been exposed due to someone else being decent starting on the other side.

He gives way too much cushion. I doubt he is just taking off the season since he knows he is gone because play like this is just torching his value.

Good Lord, make your vacation plans AFTER the season.

And the award for the best Avatar goes to Section 11! I like your timely use of current events combined with an almost savory darkness of mood. It's really quite refreshing.

I have to totally agree on this one.

His play has become totally bipolar. He makes a nice play one minute, then the next looks like he's totally lost in lala land.

It also appears to me that other teams are now scheming on him, not only forcing him to cover much taller receivers, but seeing that ridiculous cushion he sometimes gives.
(I think the only reason they didn't do more of that before was...they didn't need too....the pickings were too easy on the other side. Now that play over there has been a little better as-of-late now we are seeing him getting more action.

The only tall receiver I've seen him effectively handle was Plaxico...and Barrett did do a good job on him. Burress, is too me, physically too much like Randy Moss...lanky and skinny, but doesn't have Moss's apparent strength. Barrett played physical on him and it worked.
Some of these other big receivers just eat him alive.

Why was that? Why the solid game on Plexico?
Burress is not known for his 100% concentration, so maybe that was more a result of Burress playing to his enigmatic reputation than Barrett playing up to his potential (for lack of a better word)?

I just don't get it. He's gripping or something. This is not the way that an NFL calibre corner plays in their contract year.
I'm at a loss for words with this guy.

Again, I can't disagree on the "solid game" on Barrett''s part....Burress was a non-factor... I did get the feeling, during the game, that the Steelers had game planned for a big game from Plaxico vx Barrett matchup...and it fizzled. I was just giving Barrett the benifit of the doubt as to the cause of that.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of interest he gets in free agency, that's for sure.
A little more footspeed and this guy would be a very solid corner.
C'est la vie.

DeAngelo Hall and Sean Taylor would do wonders for this secondary. An influx of blazing speed and Boldinesque football savvy in one fell swoop come mid April.

I guess we won't know since he refused to talk to reporters after the game (which speaks volumes in itself).

But Mac did say "it's up the indivual to play it." (I guess meaning what type of coverage he's going to give the receiver.) "we knew the situation with the timeouts....you have to make a play."

First time I've ever heard Mac be semi critical of a player.

I'm curious what Shane's opinion of Barrett is - I'm not trying to call you out Shane but I want to know if you still feel the same way about him or not based on his overall season - and why you feel whatever way you do. Personally - I'm thanking my lucky stars that he didn't take his contract extension - you can easily upgrade someone who plays 10 yards off the receiver at all times (no matter what the circumstance) for 2 million dollars. He should either fire his agent or get his head examined IMO.

Before the season, I thought Barrett was at best a nickel CB. As the season started and got going, I was pleasantly surprised. Maybe it was because OCs were finding the pickings "easier" across the way and it was probably Barrett making some plays. I got to the point where I really began to think the guy was turning out to being a SOLID #2.

Then in the past 3-4 weeks, I don't know what has happened but he has turned into a reception allowing machine. Play across the field from him has picked up a bit and now OCs are basically abusing his cushion and making him look like the nickel back I always thought he was.

I think he is pretty much gone...maybe for a couple different reasons. He is a CB with experience so someone will pay for him, but it is good the Cards didn't buckle and held their ground on the extension.

I agree. He has regressed. He was a much better corner last year and the first part of this year than he has been the last 3 or 4 games. Too bad. I thought he was getting better

At the very most, next year, he should have to fight to even be our #3 guy.

Devils Advocate - I do have this one nagging question - Is it David? Or is it the scheme? I know that Mac has said that how tight the coverage is "up to the CB", but is that how other teams do it?

On other teams, wouldn't the DC or head coach tell the CB between plays - "Play tight; we have your backside covered. We need a turnover. If you have the opportunity, I want you to jump the play."?

We've seen Jake Plummer (who struggled here) chalk up far better numbers in a different setting. Maybe it's the same with Barrett. Maybe it's the coaching.

Having said that, right now we can't take the chance for Barrett to remain one of our starting CB's. We need two new ones. And if it turns out David blossoms under the tutilege of our new coach, then we'll enjoy the luxury of having 3.

Would he be better with a pass rush? If we could get pressure with 4 guys do you think our pass coverage would be better? I think so. However, I am of the mindset that the OL and DL are the core of your team. Blocking and pressure in the backfield are the two most important parts of the game.

Well Im actually at a loss for words when it comes to his play over the last 3 weeks.

I have always keyed in on him because he is one of my favorite players and he had always been lambasted on this board many times without cause.

Just like the game where you had about 10 people on this board saying he got torched all day. I reviewed the tape and proved that he only had like two or three short completions on him all game with a few passes defensed and a couple great tackles in the open field.

I was unable to watch the Carolina game due to the fact that I took my son to Knottsberry Farm this last weekend. First game I have missed in over two years but the way they had been playing I said screw it. So I cant comment on his play duringthat game.

But the two weeks prior to that the guy has been an absolute mess. He has regressed in a bad way and I really cant figure out why. At this point Cheese I would have to agree we lucked out by not signing him!

Barrett and Tommy Bennett will be hanging out next year, talking about the good old days, watching the NFL on T.V.
