Many words have described Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson during his contract extension-trade drama, with something like limbo being the overarching theme.

It's not exactly hard to see why -- he's cleary stuck waiting to see if and when the Bengals finalize those apparent nearish contract extensions for Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.

In the meantime, Hendrickson and his reps received permission from the team to seek a trade and have been looking around for one.

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Sunday's "SportsCenter" (h/t Bleacher Report's Joseph Zucker), though, the Bengals have remained hesitant on a trade and have even had new discussions about an extension:

"This one's complicated because Hendrickson does want a new contract well above $30 million per year. The Bengals have tried to sign him, they made him a contract offer. And I'm even told despite trade talks, they've had some reignited discussions with Hendrickson's people over the last few days, but it still hasn't gotten anywhere. It looks like the Bengals' priorities are those two receivers and that makes it tough for Hendrickson. So, he's certainly open to a trade at this point. I'm hearing the Bengals have not been overly eager to accept those trade calls and they've gotten them to look into it and really seriously entertain a trade here. It seems like they still want to try to find a way to keep him, but the question is do they have the cash to do it?

Reporting before this suggested that Hendrickson's trade market had mostly collapsed anyway as possible trade partners made other moves. Cincinnati's price, as expected, is very high and the fact Hendrickson is at the age of 30 and already at his apex makes the idea of a huge contract discomforting for teams.

Given that Higgins and Chase extensions could actually save the Bengals cap space in 2025 and the trade market has softened, perhaps the team and his reps can find a happy balance that works for both parties.

Either way, nothing is likely to happen on the Hendrickson front until Chase and Higgins get done.
