I think that James Bettcher is doing a very good job---but the defense at times seems far too confused---seems like about 5-7 plays a game---and it seems the defense gets burned on those plays more often than not---you can see it in the defensive line, some of them standing up too long and looking around and then sometimes never even getting into a three point stance or never getting set.
The coverage glitches happen to every team, especially when players bite on fakes. But, it seems that the coverage glitches have also coincided frequently with the confusion up front.
I will also add how disappointing it was to see Bettcher go to the three man rush on two consecutive third down plays, both of which resulted in easy, non-pressure throws and simple conversions by Bradford. Yes, Bettcher tried to disguise the coverage as he threatened the inside blitzes---but it meant that the ILBers got late starts on the zone drops and left some sizeable windows in the 8-12 yard range to throw into.
However, what Bettcher is doing---he is trying to wean the defense off having to blitz so often---and thus there are times when this has helped the coverage and there are times when the has helped the opposing QB, WRS and RBs in giving them a little more time to find the open man.
All in all, what Bettcher is doing with regard to the big picture is smart and is the logical next step.
