I have a different take.

We're fine when game situations call,for aggressive man coverage.

But our guys don't execute very well when the situation calls for safety-first zone schemes.

We blame Bettcher for our falling back into prevent coverages instead of blitzing 100% of the time; but I'm not sold on the problem being which scheme we should play in a certaion situation.

The problem, IMHO lies in poor technique in zone coverage - i.e. late to the ball, wrong positioning, poor communication etc.

We have two ways to fix this - (1) Teach the right techniques. (2) Don't play zone. I suspect the second option may be unrealistic. We need to teach the techniques better. I guess we can blame Bettcher for poor zone coverage techniques, but I'd rather he and his coaches be given enough time to teach the new stuff.

we have poor technique in zone because we spent years building our defense to play press man

Being a 1st round pick doesn't guarantee success. For example, Dion Jordan is a first round pick in his prime but I doubt you're expecting him to be a pass rushing demon for Seattle come Thursday.
:stick::stick::stick:

Oh, great!! You have just now assured that Jordan; a guy that has done jack so far in his career; will go off, like a rocket, vs. the Cardinals, in this game in front of his home-town friends and family (Jordan is from Chandler, AZ)!!

;) jk.

The key to playing good zones is playing man to man on the receiver in your zone and sticking with him until he leaves your zone and thus pass him off to the next man in the zone (which, as Jeff said so aptly, communication is so key). Our guys don't do that fast or well enough. They are flat-footed and let receivers easily find the gaps. Easy throws for QB.

I thought this past game was the first we showed any aggressiveness from the Defense. Probably due to SF Oline issues, but regardless, it was a long overdue change for this group.

The aggressive blitz's have been what has defined our D, dating back to Horton with Whiz.

Skins looked to frustrate Seattle by blitzing the A gaps, something we did under Bowles regularly, but something we've slowly gotten away from since DWaste disappeared.

Hoping to see it return this week in what I think is a bellwether game for us. Win, and we still have a shot to chase for a weak division crown. Lose, and it's probably over for us this year.

Go Cards!!!

Bettcher sucks and now that CC is removed to cover his deficiencies on the DL in relation to the his schemes, other offenses are feasting on his ineptitude
