Agreed. Can't count how many times "X" team was way over the cap, couldn't keep any of their high priced FA's, then next thing you know they are all signed and one or two were paid the highest contract at their position.
Proof will be if New Orleans can do this, this year. They are what, like 70M over the cap?

They have already shaved off $34M of that. Should be easy for them to make room with a few more moves:

Will they make the room? Sure. Somehow. Will they compete for anything without Sean Payton and who knows at QB? Very unlikely. Taysom Hill is likely stuck as their starter. They're about to be in the mire.

We see teams every year, able to resign players (Bucs just resigned there entire Super Bowl roster last year) and Free Agents, even when in Cap Hell. It can be done, even if the Cards really haven't played much in that sandbox before.
The thing is they figured out a way to sign good players that were drafted by people that know how to draft & sign players. We don't have that. What we have is a GM that can't draft, & fixes our roster with aging vets with injury histories.

They’ll sign Winston.

Exactly my point. They will either

1. Make room with the current squad. (unlikely IMO, at least one of the bigger ones will be moving on)
2. Keep everyone and make more cap problems in the future.
3. Stay over the cap and risk fines/draft pick forfeiture etc.

Well, I feel like the argument is being made that the salary cap doesn't matter, but the way you write that, it seems like you agree that at some point it's time to pay the piper and it will catch up to teams.

I get that. Some time my thoughts are coherent.

The question wasn't necessarily IF they would get there, but how.

Can you shed 80M in cap while still fielding a competitive team?

If they don't get Watson, this could be a bottom 3 team in the NFL next year.
