Davis has a solid background using the 3 - 4 defense which is basically what Whis wants to install. I think he will be a fine choice. The players know him which should be a plus. Its really good to promote from within if you have quality coaches.

Actually I think he has a well rounded background having coached different areas of defense. I think its better than someone who just coached one or two positions. I will give the benefit of the doubt.

The key is going to be keeping Dansby. Then adding players in free agency and the draft that fit a 3 - 4 defense. A coach is only as good as the talent that he has.

It's been at least 12 hours with no corroboration.

Suggest we cool our jets until the news does (or doesn't) become official.

Whisenhunt has proven beyond a shadow of doubt that he knows how to build a football team from the bottom up. Davis has a pedigree that is somewhat similar to that of Haley. His Dad coached in the NFL & as a kid he was always around the game. He actually started on the offensive side of the ball & was moved to defense to round out his skills as a coach. The more I look at this hire, the more I like it. I also like the fact that he spent time with the Steelers, so I know that he's on the same page with Whiz. I also think that this hire will only help in the Cardinals ability to keep Dansby. The Bidwill's know what they have with Whisenhunt & give them credit for allowing Whiz to have COMPLETE control of his coaching staff. Pendy will be a decent DC for someone, but his philosophy was in stark contrast to what Whiz wanted here.

Hmm, Ktar might have pulled this one out of their ass.
I don't see this mentioned anywhere else.

CARDS POISED TO PROMOTE DAVIS
Posted by Mike Florio on February 14, 2009, 11:19 a.m. EST
In the wake of the Cardinals’ surprise decision to part ways with defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast, we heard that linebackers coach Billy Davis was the favorite to land the job.

But then Mike Jurecki of XTRA in Phoenix reported that the Cards had received permission to interview Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler.

But then Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the Cards hadn’t even sought permission to interview Butler.

Now, KTAR in Phoenix reports that Davis is getting the job.

Whis has been hinting that he likes to 'promote from within.' After all, it's how he got the O.C. gig in Pittsburgh. He probably got that philosophy from Bill Cowher.

Eh, I still maintain that if it is indeed Davis, It's because he couldn't get Butler.

If the pick was Davis all along it would have been done a week ago.

I agree with this. Makes no sense at all to delay it if Davis was in fact first choice.

Somers' column may have been written/published before the news broke.

Sommers wrote a blog 5 hours after it was posted on KTAR. His article came out a few hours after his blog.

It is only KTAR reporting anything. Although I think it will ultimatly be correct.

As for hire. Yes I know in Wiz we trust and all that stuff, but it doesnt mean he is infalible or we have to like everything he does. He is human he is going to make mistakes and there is nothing wrong with thinking he has made one now or in the future.

The only thing we have to go by is the last time he was a DC and his D's stunk out loud. 2005 ranked 3rd to last in points allowed and dead last in 2006. Very underwhelming resume as a DC. Lets hope 2nd time around is better then the first. Davis has had 6 jobs in 9 years now. No one seems to want to keep him around, because all were lateral moves except for the DC job in SF, where he was fired. Putting resume against resume I would have went with Pendy who clearly has the better resume.

Hope I am wrong but I think we are going to end up hating this hire in the end. If true, since it hasnt been reported on being true yet.

Letting Pendy go was all about correcting philosophical defensive differences with Whiz. This was not about comparing resume's between Pendy & Davis. Whiz wanted Pendy out regardless of the outcome of the SB & I have to agree with him. Whether it's Davis or Butler, we will see an entirely different approach next year. I would not judge Davis based on what happened in SF. It's nonsense to talk about the infallibilty of humans. If anything, because this guy was on his current staff, there's even LESS of a chance that Whiz is wrong about this guy.

Maybe I'm just dumb, but I'm willing to wait and see for a bit - Mid season 2009 - before i generate an opinion about WHOEVER is the new DC.

If Davis turns out to be the choice I must say I am not excited like I was when I heard Clancy got the boot. Given the time lag my guess is Davis was not the 1st choice.

As much as I hated Pendergast at times I must say I would rather have kept Pendergast over promoting Davis.

Again, I wouldn't read a lot into Davis's time as DC in S.F. Nolan was the DC in Baltimore when he took the head job in S.F. Those crappy defenses were on Nolan, IMO. I don't think Davis had a lot of creative control there.

Bottom line is Pendergast had to go. He had been here 5 years and our defense was still 28th in PPG allowed this last season. The Cardinals have too much talent on defense to give up that many points. We weren't going to progress with Pendy in charge.
