Darren Aronofsky Helming Black Swan
Source: Variety
January 19, 2007

Universal Pictures has acquired Black Swan, a psychological thriller for Darren Aronofsky to direct, says Variety. The film will be produced by Aronofsky's Protozoa and Mike Medavoy's Phoenix Pictures.

John McLaughlin has begun writing the film that looks at the manipulative relationship between a veteran dancer and a rival. The studio is fast-tracking the project for Aronofsky, who most recently helmed The Fountain.

Eric Watson, who partners with Aronofsky in their Universal-based Protozoa, will produce with Phoenix's Medavoy and Arnie Messer. Brad Fischer and David Thwaites will executive produce.

Black Swan

Release Date: December 3, 2010 (limited)
Studio: Fox Searchlight Pictures
Director: Darren Aronofsky
Screenwriter: Mark Heyman, John McLaughlin
Genre: Drama
MPAA Rating: R (for strong sexual content, disturbing violent images, language and some drug use)
Website: BlackSwan2010.com

Starring: Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey, Winona Ryder

Plot Summary: "Black Swan" follows the story of Nina (Portman), a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her retired ballerina mother Erica (Barbara Hershey) who zealously supports her daughter's professional ambition. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. But Nina has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Kunis), who impresses Leroy as well. Swan Lake requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. Nina fits the White Swan role perfectly but Lily is the personification of the Black Swan. As the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side with a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.

I anticipate quite a few long boring ballet sequences. And even more long boring discussions about long boring ballet sequences.

:mulli:

Looking at Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman is never boring. Especially in skin tight Ballet outfits.

Very, very good movie. It completely screws with your mind so that you don't really know exactly what is real and what is just a dream. Natalie Portman was fabulous in this movie and really deserves an Oscar nod if not a win. Kunis was great as well. This is near the top of best movies for this year.

Just saw it. Damn good and Portman was fantastic. But it is not something I will ever watch again.

That lesbian scene between super freaking hot Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman was freaking great and worth the price of admission :)

the scene of Portman by herself was even hotter to me for some reason.

and mulli, don't let the previews fool you, this movie's more about someone psychotic meltdown than it is ballet. it's a puply ride that's well worth taking if you're into some hot, twisted stuff.

Totally agree about the ride bro. Well worth it.

That scene was hot I agree. But the end of that scene was a big blast of cold water hitting you right in the face!

I definitely want to see this again but I don't know how soon I can see it. I may have to wait for it to come out on DVD.

Brilliant movie. A lot of little things in there that are easy to miss, but are really cool. Natalie Portman was absolutely incredible in it.

And the effects, especially during the Black Swan dance at the end, were spectacular.

Funny story - my mom and a few of her friends (all women in their 60's) went to see this. They got disgusted, walked out, and complained to theater management. The manager said they had gotten many complaints, apologized, and gave them all a pass to see another film at any Harkins' theater.

What was their complaint? Because it is really a good movie? To sexual for them?

Yeah, they all said it should have been rated X for as much of it as they watched...

It was not even close to that bad. They didn't even show boobs. Do they read the Rating warning before they see a movie and the reasons it was given that rating?

I guess not in this case. They just thought it would be a dramatic/thriller. I'd say they are not the target audience.
