I don't think Gabbert will amount to much but I'm fine with kicking the tires and seeing if there is anything there. Especially at the price that they got him for.

I like the signing. Gabbert's career has been marred by injuries, coaching turnovers and bad teams. I'm looking forward to what he can do behind a decent line and with time to throw -- and with Fitzgerald to throw to.

The signing of QB Blaine Gabbert is auspicious in a number of ways:

1-It will definitely put some pressure on Drew Stanton to up the level of his play.

2-It gives the Cardinals a first-hand look at a possible successor to Carson Palmer.

3-It gives BA a chance to develop Gabbert by taking first team reps on Wednesdays, which BA said he wanted to give a rookie if they drafted one.

I don't mind the signing. I think he has a very slim chance against Stanton, but could hang on as the third QB.

The Stanton hate makes me laugh. He's highly regarded in NFL circles, has a winning record for us... but this board hates him.

I don't think the board hates him. I think in limited action the last two years he has been terrible. The stats don't lie..

I've seen the stats and have looked many times... but the question I keep asking, is who do you think is better?

There are a few select teams that have Garoppolo or had a situation like Glennon, but most teams have a guy just as bad as Stanton. The best you can hope for in a backup is a steady guy who doesn't lose you games.

And that's ignoring the fact that he's been in the system for what's coming up on 5 years, and is another coach on the sideline, in a sense. Stanton isn't a starter, but he accepts his role and is helpful in other ways.

Gabbert had more starts and better stats as a 21 year old rookie, though. In Jacksonville without training camp to prepare.

Compared to what set of data? He completed 50% of his passes.

The guy is 9-31 in his career. Those are absolutely atrocious numbers, even though I don't like to point to wins as a solely QB stat.

so let's see 9-31 means 40 games in 6 years. That's 6.6 games a year, on 2 of the worst teams in the league. But, because he couldn't somehow turn those ships (hulks ? Wrecks ?) around, he is irretrievably bad. That seems to be your statement.

Maybe he is that bad, maybe he will bloom in the desert. I don't know the answer to that and neither do you. I suspect that even he doesn't know that. They are simply taking a low cost chance on someone they see something in. If it doesn't pan out, so what ? It's a cheap experiment. None of us will know before a pre-season game or two. The organization will know long before that.

Nor should you or anyone based on the horrible teams he played on. Give the man a chance.

I'm only trying to temper the expectations of the "get rid of Stanton" crowd. I have no problem with the Blaine train being our 3rd QB, or poking the tires to see if we can refine what caused problems in the past.

But hoping we get rid of Drew excitedly with Gabbert as the much greater option is totally silly. Stanton's experience and winning record, even if his play hasn't been amazing, is perfectly acceptable for a backup QB.

Not sure how you get the bolded from his post. The second part of your post I agree with. Doesn't hurt to see what he's got. If he's a dud release him. If he's a better back up than Stanton we got a good deal.

If he's a better backup than Dysert, and shows some potential, we got a good deal. It's not Ryan Lindley, or Max Hall... I'm happy with it.

I don't think he should have turned around any ships, but a lot of staffs have shown they're willing to give up on him for other options.

No one knows what the situation was with the 49ers. They cleaned out Kaepernick locker but not Gabbert. I think they wanted to bring him back.

In Jacksonville it was a new staff with a top 3 pick wanting to start over with "their" guy,

So he signed for the vet minimum which is what, $845k? So if he is cut before the season starts, does he get all of that or does he have guaranteed money somewhere in his contract that's half that?

I always wondered how that worked. When a team signs a player and then cuts him months later, what do they owe that player?

Vet minimum to sign a 3rd string QB, who is still 27?

That is a very good pickup and move if you ask me. He is better than Ryan Lindley, and RELATIVE TO 3rd STRING QB'S IN NFL, that is a good signing, and good depth.

Plus it is competition for Drew Stanton, which is needed.

Kaep's political demonstrations left a bad taste in my mouth. Sitting, kneeling, lying down, turning your back......whatever. The translation is still a big F U to our flag and national anthem. You might have a problem with some stuff that's going on in our country, but you still better show proper respect to the people that laid down their lives for your freedom. That's why nobody wants to sign him. Give me Gabbert all day over Kaep.
