I think what the Cards want is for Carson to play one more year after this coming season and sign Gabbert to a 2-year backup deal. Carson retires in 2019 and Gabbert will have had two seasons to "redshirt". Even if BA is gone he'll still be familiar with the personel and I doubt Keim deviates too far off BA's system with whoever replaces him.

It is surprising and to me disappointing that BA would already name Stanton number 2. Why not wait at least one more preseason game before making that decision. In the past, BA says, "Stanton knows the offense." If that is the key test for how people are evaluated we are in trouble. I wonder how Kim feels about this? I would be very surprised if he approves but I doubt he would say anything.

what i like about Gabbert:

you see the arm talent. When he sets his feet, throws in rythym -- the ball travels. He has also made outstanding accuracy throws: not just on the WR, but on proper side of the WR. Final TD throw vs Bears was great

what worries:

release a little long.

when not in rythym, when the feet arent right -- looks awful. For being athletic, when on the run not much of a threat.

final 2pt conversion throw vs Bears an example -- threw before his feet were set and the throw had no chance

The backup QB in a playoff run is a matter of trust first, ability second. I think it's fair to say Gabbert outplayed Staton in games that don't count. It's not clear that makes it time to trust a Gabbert to be the backup, especially if you cut Stanton. Keep both and if Carson is hurt start Stanton and if he fails use Gabbert. I think both will be cut. It's a long way to next year. I think BA will have time to better assess Gabbert. No need to rush if they keep both backups.

Yes, but he's also had an extra game...however, imo, he deserves the kudos for his work.

Not to mention he's a top ten pick. On ability alone, he should be wiping the floor with undrafted guys and such.

Call me when he does this against real competition, which he hasn't proven he can.

when we talk about a qb playing in preseason we use to understimate his performance cause
he is facing third stringers but he is playing with third stringers too
how can we make a valid point about his performances?

Gabbert played well versus a mix of the Cowboys' starters and 2nd stringers. The key is, he's played well in each of the 4 games, regardless of what the lineups were. That's pretty impressive.

Consistently kicking the ass of backups while throwing to backups is good enough to earn a spot IMO

I would not dump Stanton yet for Gabbert, though I would like the team to hold on to him. Why? Forget about the quality of talent of the field to be used as a indication for good or bad, it is the schemes ran in preseason which makes evaluation skewed. That defense you are facing and that offense you are running is far more complex in the regular season and the quarterback position is just as mental as a physical challenge

I really don't buy the excuse that playing well in preseason means nothing. I have never seen a qb play really well in every preseason game than stink it up in the regular season. I think it is a good indicator.

Look at Dak last year, he tore it up in preseason, but people were saying it was a fluke, then he showed it was for real when the regular season came around.

QB's like Osweiler, Bortles,Hackenburg, and Glennon are stinking it up in preseason, and the teams seem to be taking that as a good indicator they should not be their starters.

Supposedly there have been teams calling the cards inquiring about trading for Gabbert. This is the same guy that was a free agent 3 months ago, and they could have got him for nothing.

Apparently they are valuing his preseason performance, because that is the only thing that has changed.

Logan Thomas completed 62% of his passes with 1 TD, 1 INT, and a QBR of 85.6 the camp when he was released.

Gabbert is completing 63% of his passes with 1 TD, 1 INT and a QBR of 89.5.

Logan Thomas had one really good game, and was average at best in the rest. I remember that game well, and knew it was a fluke while it was happening, because several of the passes were highly questionable risks. He also completely stunk up practice which was reported in the media repeatedly.

Gabbert has been good in all 4 games and in practices, They are not comparable.

That int is not on Gabbert either, it was a pass that should have been caught and was tipped. He has moved the team repeatedly if he is given any time in the pocket. It is clear he knows what he is doing, and I believe the light has come on for him.

I will go on record now, Gabbert will at least be an average starting qb on our team if he gets the opportunity to start.

Do you guys remember when someone here went on a ten paragraph rant about ESPN not showing highlights of Thomas' "amazing" performance as the third stringer in his first preseason game? That was funny.

Gabbert will play sparingly in the 1st qt, Knight the rest of the game. RB's Penny, Ellington, and James Summers. C.Johnson may not play.

reference CJ either means he is getting cut and don't want to risk a settlement or he's made the team I wonder which?

The only starter I remember seeing is Safety Byron Jones. Cowboys defense doesn't look very good on paper to begin with though...

He says something like that about everyone. Levi Brown was a great tackle until he was dumped.
