If this turns out to be true, perhaps the rumor that Jeff "teflon" Blake was called "Leon" by his teammates was true. Cutting "high and long" Blake, for his performance LAST YEAR, really sends a message to the rest of the team.

Now, we've announced Quan moving to split end, so we could be taking a wideout, and cut teflon Blake, so we could be taking a QB.

Nice.

Didn't Walsh call him "the black Joe Montana"?

I gotta believe if it's true it was over PT and not last year, no way Green would openly praise him for a month and then cut him because of last year.

A guess would be Denny told him he was considering drafting a QB, Blake wasn't happy with that, and they decided to cut him rather than have an unhappy veteran around 2 young QB's?

You would think ESPN would be all over with their connections to Green.

I believe that Blake would have been regulated to 3rd on the depth chart anyways since McCown more than likely will be starting Wk 1 anyways and then probably start whichever QB they drafted the final 2-4 wks of the season (based on whether or not the Cardinals in Wild Card contention).....

I'm still waivering them on drafting a QB with the #3 pick, but still wouldn't mind if they selected someone like John Navarre with the 4th round pick and groom him....

Besides Brunell and Kurt Warner, which QBs are available on the FA market?

Would they possibly trade for someone like Mike McMahon?

Understandable Russ. But he reported that he heard it from Dennis Green himself which is beleivable seeing as Green has many ties there still.

What is Culpeppers contract status? And is his backup a Green leftover? Just wondering out loud.

But I think you wait until draft so you aren't tipping your hand in any way and being left high and dry without the QB you want. Kind of lose your negotiating power if they are targeting a FA and if they are targeting Manning or Ben R, there could be a huge group ready to leapfrog the Cards to grab them...then they end up settling.

Keep Blake and if you don't get the QB you want, at least that bridge isn't burned.

I have a sneaking suspicion this is how his entire career has gone. That would explain why his numbers have always been solid, but he's never been a winner.

Man am I glad I didn't buy his jersey after his great game against the Packers. :) I almost did.

Nope if you look at his career numbers he's not padding stats. He did in the Steeler game this year, but for most of his career he hasn't. 40 of his 132 career TD passes were in the 4th quarter, but he had 36 in the 2nd 30 in the 3rd and 26 in the first. His career rating goes down slightly when behind.

My point is that if they are calling me, I wouldn't take it seriously yet..

We already have the better version of Mike McMahon, and his name is Josh McCown.

Yeah, but he was mainly with the Bengals :) They're usually down 14-zip in the 1st quarter, right?

I digress, good research there Russ, I stand corrected, however I must admit that's the impression I got of Blake this last year when I'd see him stink it up on the field only to finish the game with good numbers. I have NO problem with starting McCown in 2004, no problem at all.

KingLouie, I wouldn't be terribly disappointed if we didn't draft a QB at #3 also, but I am not completely against the idea as well. But I don't see why they would draft a QB in the 4th like Navarre to groom because McCown is just that with more talent. Which is why i don't see the point in going for a guy like Mike Mcmahon(sp?) because i think if we draft a QB as our starting QB of the future it has to be one of the top QB's Manning or Ben or else I just dont see us improving in that area.

Understood. Just didn't want you to think this was a personal issue with people not believing you.

One of the more active days on this board ever was the day we signed Kordell Stewart, the fact that we never did makes it pretty memorable for those who were here that day.

If Green told ESPNnews, it's likely true.

Just didn't want you to think it was personal against you.

It could be that Green let it slip to an ESPN buddy that they are planning to cut Blake, or they have, but they haven't actually told Blake yet. If I was Green, I'd be damn ticked at the reporter if that is the case.

And if I were Graves, I'd be damned pissed at Green for talking to a buddy about this before the organization talked to Blake......if anything the Bidwill's respect protocol

I looked these stats up once before on stats inc and it is true. Blake's numbers are about the same across all 4 quarters. Whether they were winning or losing he was pretty consistent. I dont have the inclination to look it up now...sorry :(

Anyway, I need some confirmation. I just heard from a friend that was announced on ESPN News, but we already know that!

Man I bet Blake is pissed right now!

Something about this is very fishy.......it doesn't make sense. If it's about PT, Blake had to realize that he was destined to be #2 anyway this year. Brunell isn't coming here to be the #2 either. What other FA's are out there that are cheaper than Blake? Is Parsons ready to be #2?

We already have the better version of Mike McMahon, and his name is Josh McCown.

I guess it's not the best way to project a QB, but it seems that most QBs that came out of University of Michigan did better at the NFL level than when playing college ball.... Tom Brady, Jim Harbaugh, Todd Collins, Elvis Grbac, etc....I just see Navarre devoloping into that mold....The fact that U of M seems to have an offense that generally emphasizing as running game also minimizes how much impact their QBs can make.....

I didn't necessarily mean McMahon in particular, but any QB that is "stuck" as 2nd string, but warrants a chance to start and will never get that opportunity until he goes elsewhere....

I say we must draft either a top pass-rusher or CB at #3.....

I posed these questions before.... What top QBs will be eligible for the '05 draft? What QBs will be available on the '05 FA market?

I would start McCown regardless and see if he merits the role of being a #1 QB and if he fails, they'll have someone to fall back on in the interim and finally get that "franchise QB" w/in the next 1-2 years.....

Why draft a QB when they might have someone who has that potential in McCown? Does that defeat the purpose of having a #3 pick? It essentially does.....

And if this is true, is the subliminal message that we will be drafting a QB or that we will not be drafting a QB? Let the games begin!

[Pan to shot of Rod Graves’ Superbowl party]

Green: Hey man, pass me the Doritos.

Graves: Sure (passes Doritos).

Green: Ya know, this Jake guy is pretty good.

Graves: (spits Mt. Dew all over his high definition plasma screen) PLUMMER?!? WTF?! You know, I spend all this time putting together a nice Superbowl party and you come over and…

Green: Delhomme! Jake DELHOMME! Carolina Panthers? The Superbowl we’re watching??

Graves: Oh, yeah. Roger that. Sorry.
Graves: Where the hell did he come from anyway?

Green: He backed up Kurt Warner at Safeway. Learned a lot apparently. “Paper or plastic,” my butt. This guy KNOWS what you’re looking for. He reads the customers’ eyes. He studies the conveyor belt. He knows if you’ve got coupons. He’s on top of it.

Graves: Cool. Having a solid bagger is key now-a-days.
Graves: But I gotta tell ya, McCown could dunk on this guy all day. Allll day. We’re setting up a charity hoops event so we can show off his 38” vertical.

Green: Hmm, interesting… You seen him play Blake 1 on 1 yet?

Graves: 1 on 1?? I haven’t even seen Blake bag groceries yet.

Green: Well, what… whadya mean? Does he eat out a lot?

Graves: No, he just doesn’t bag groceries.

Green: Man. When I was his age, I bagged. You better believe I bagged. Paper, plastic, you name it.

Graves: Word.

Green: I don’t know if I want this guy on my team. Well all gotta chop wood, bag groceries, stay the course…. You know, all that crap.

Graves: Word.

Green: Hey look, the new Leon commercial!
