Brandon Valley got hot from beyond the arc at the perfect time, shooting 48% from 3 in their 53-45 championship win on Saturday to knock off the reigning AA state champs, Mitchell, and avenge last season's title game loss.
Briggs Knutson led the team in scoring with 17 points and made five 3-pointers. Landon Dulaney recorded 13 points, five rebounds, and seven assists.
The first half unraveled much the way everyone thought it would: a defensive game with neither side putting up a ton of points. The first quarter ended tied at 11 points but the half as a whole was back and forth.
There were five lead changes in the first half. Mitchell took a five-point lead with 3:23 to play off a layup by Mitchell center Gavin Hinker. Hinker posed a massive problem for the Lynx. The 6-foot-5 big man scored 11 first-half points on 4-for-5 shooting.
Brandon Valley struggled to contain the Kernels’ size and physicality in the paint. Mitchell scored 10 more points in the paint in the first half than the Lynx, they had two more offensive rebounds, and were plus three in second chance points. The Kernels also created three more turnovers in the first half and scored eight points off those turnovers.
Yet with all of that Brandon Valley only trailed by three at halftime.
The Lynx held Mitchell to 38% from the field in the first half and didn’t allow the Kernels to make a single three.
Brandon Valley got it going from beyond the arc to take the lead in the third. Brandon Valley went on a 9-0 run in just over a minute, rattling off three consecutive triples to take a 34-30 lead. The Lynx made 4-of-8 3-pointers in the quarter including two from freshman Lincoln McInerney.
