Thats a curveball if true. Everyone just assumed it would be Butler if he was allowed to interview for the position.

Ray Horton is going to have a lot of credibility in the locker room where every player is going to know that he was the second choice (at least).

Excellent planning, Cards.

At some point, the "In Whis We Trust" sentiment on this board is going to have to begin to turn. There were a lot of "I'm sure that Whis has a wink-wink-nudge-nudge understanding with his BFF Butler on this situation, and that's why they're being so patient."

Whiz can't control the Steeler organization. if butler is/was his man then he did the right thing in waiting and trying to land him.

What I'm wondering is how it would be Horton so quickly? Would they even have had a chance to interview him yet? Also what about the candidate they asked to speak to from the Packers?

That is just messed up that they would stand in the way of Butler. It is a lot easier to get excited about the LB coach of the Steelers than the secondary coach--especially after watching the Super Bowl. That doesn't mean Horton would be a bad hire (only time will tell) but on the surface it seems like "settling"...wasn't Moss from GB supposed to interview as well?

If Lebeau is retiring then its not a crap move. It would only be a crap move by the Steelers if they know Lebeau is going to be back, especially after Tomlin was quoted just this week "I will not stand in the way of any assistant getting a promotion."

Second, lets not fool ourselves into thinking that these guys do not talk to each other outside the confines of what is generally accepted as legal in the rule book. Coaching circles is a very small world, these guys already know each other and have had "guy talk" (AKA interviews) on the golf course. Especially considering that Horton already knows Wiz. Wiz has probably already talked to some of the GB coaches as well, on the golf course that is.;)

As for Horton himself he is just as much of a student under Lebeau that Butler was. I think Horton has actually spent more time with him then Butler has both as player and coach. He knows the 3-4 zone blitz scheme as well as anyone on that team. Its just that Butler is better friends with Wiz and has some better results at the LB position then Horton does. Very good hire IMO.

So trying hard and failing is better than succeeding to a lesser extent? I'm sure that Max Hall will be happy that's your position.

The Cards are now stuck with Ray Horton (apparently), who will have little credibility in the locker room because he's clearly not the coaching staff's first choice (or even perhaps second). Horton will be on a short leash for whenever Keith Butler actually becomes available again (as Bill Davis was).

Having a plan and failing to execute it? Isn't that why we went through three quarterbacks this season?
