Why is the choice between a 5 and a 10? There were plenty of 8 or 9 candidates out there. The problem is that Whis is holding a flame for a high school crush who's married to someone else. That's never going to work out, and it doesn't matter how hot she is.

If you struck out with the 10 and now you're left with a 3?

Plenty of 8-9 candidates out there in your eyes maybe. All I saw were re-treads, 4-3 guys, or other guys who haven't called a play before just like Horton.

Who says Horton is a 3 anyways?

You don't have any evidence that Horton is considered a quality coach in the league, so I guess we're even. At the very least I have the obvious evidence that Butler or the Steelers have spurned Whis at least twice now.

I didn't say "the players won't hold him in any type of respect." Please don't put words in my mouth. Obviously he's going to have less credibility for not being the top choice. The guys are still going to play hard for him because they're jobs are on the line.

But if Bill Davis was the choice the team was "stuck with" two years ago, then how is Ray Horton that different?

Butler turned it down the first time because of his hip surgery.

Who are these 8 or 9's that are clearly better than Horton? And are you saying that Horton is a 3? Seriously?

I'm not saying that Horton is a 3. I'm just extending Joe's metaphor a little. When you hold out for a 10 and all the 7+'s leave, you're left with the same or worse than what you started with.

I think that Horton is a 6. I don't agree that he was being considered for any number of DC positions. I think that Greg Manusky was clearly the best person for this job by no small measure. Experienced at the job, designed good defenses, worked with similar talent as what we have.

I didn't think that Wade Phillips was going to be a candidate for this job, but he clearly would've been better than Horton, and maybe better than Manusky.

Todd Bolwes, Keith Butler, Winston Moss, etc. are all fine guys, and may or may not be better than Horton. But there's certainly egg on the team's face for floating Keith Butler rumors (the media just doesn't manufacture these things) for two months and then fail to get him.

If the coach doesn't have credibility in the locker then that also means they don't have respect. The two things are not mutually exclusive. Cred, respect, they go together, both have to be earned. Both things Butler would have to earn just as well.

And why is it OBVIOUS?

Does Whiz trust anybody not a Steeler?

Ron Aiken- DL coach
Donnie Henderson- DB coach
Rick Courtright- Assistant DB coach
Freddie Kitchens- TE coach
John Lott- Strength coach (played one season for Pitt back in 1987 before Whiz was there)
Chris Miller- QB coach
John McNulty- WR coach
Tommie Robinson- RB coach
Ryan Slowik- Defensive quality control coach

Seems like most of our staff weren't Steelers.

Also Kent Somers is reporting we haven't heard back from either team regarding permission to talk to coaches.

Like I said k9 there was obviously more interest out there for teh guy and from an organization with far more prowess than us: http://dallas.sbnation.com/dallas-c...efensive-coordinator-ray-horton-a-possibility

And he was passed over for guys that we could've gotten had we not sat on our hands hoping that Keith Butler would be the one to give us a rose. Nice work.

Dallas actually requested permission to interview Horton but decided that they'd rather go with Rex Ryan.

Eh. Haley is a Steeler through and through. His dad was the Director of Player Personnel for the Steelers for 19 years.

For the most part, we don't hire coaches or pick up players unless the were once Steelers.

Haley is a Parcell's guy through and through. His dad being the DoPP for the Steelers has next to nothing to do with Haley's coaching tree.

True. But the interest was there none the less.

His mind seems to be made up, please refrain from confusing him with the facts! :D

Apparently it was Keith Butler's son who was the source stating that Pittsburgh denied permission to interview him.
@BrandonKButler Brandon Butler

BLOCKED: The Steelers aren't going to let my dad interview with the Arizona Cardinals. The Lord has a plan. Go Steelers.

Well Whiz didn't get his first choice. I still think the defense is going to be better next year, it kinda has to be, couldn't get much worse. :)

Same with the QB situation, could get much worse than last year.

Basically we will get better or stay the same. With no new OC, no promising instant fixes at QB, and our "incredible" running backs back the offense will probably be close to the same but can't get much worse.

This hire by Whiz is crucial. (duh right?)
The defense is the area where we can improve greatly while waiting/grooming/finding a playoff caliber QB. We have talent in our D and can pick up a player or two to make it top tier with the right coaching.

So if th Horton is the man, he holds Whiz's job in his hands. /just sayin/

I wanna be coached by Shanes Avatar. Dline, Oline, over the line, under the line, straight line curvey line, out of line. Juust want to be lined out by HER!

Horton is just fine. All I want is a Break don't bend 3-4 defensive Philosphy or even a 4-3 with our lack of current OLB's. Just a fundementally solid defense that is consistant with continuity.

Well and Shanes Avatar.
