We need your expertise.

With all the concern to re-sign Dansby and Pace many times it is mentioned that the Cards hands are tied because we have very little cap space left.

My guess is there is a way around this. Can you give us a scenario to show us how both Pace and Dansby could be extended today?

Huge roster bonuses that are set to get paid just after this year rolls over to 2008 (I think it is in March).

Also, if Dockett, Wilson, Boldin, and Fitzgerald all get changes made to their contract, is that something that's even possible in one year, and still leaves cap space?

They just wait to get their bonuses until March 1st. Pretty easy and simple explaination actually.

As for Supers question - Extending Fitz will actually lower his cap hit. He counts 15 Mill against the cap next season. Extending him will cut that in half minimum, mostly likely more then that. Dockett is not going to get a new deal after just one year. Wilson and Boldin maybe but being that it would be the first year of an extended contract the cap implications will be pretty minimal comparatively speaking like most first years of any deal.

Now keep in mind the both Rolle and Matt not playing much this season will mean they wont reach their incentives/bonuses like they normall would.

Also keep in mind that they will have to make a decision on Berry who will be in the last year of his deal, meaning very little bonus left and big cap savings if cut or traded. Same goes for Ross. Also keep in mind that Gandys contract was only a one year prove it deal that skyrockets to over 7 Million next season, thus they will either cut him or restructure his deal. One last thing we wil probably not be picking in the top 10 which means at minimum 1 Mill less to pay to a rookie next year.

There should be no worries what so ever next offseason.

Some more info if you can find my 2007 spreadsheet and take a look at the last post I made in that thread.

joe from your words:

His deal now is pretty much a 1 year prove it deal of which his base salary goes from 600K to 3.5 Mill and he gets a 2.5 Mill roster bonus in 2008.
Wouldn't that be 6 Mill not 7.

Nope its 7. Add Pro Rated Signing bonus. Cauple more lines not in that paraphrase and it states 7 Mill as well.

I only stated why his cap hit explodes. Didnt give all details to what made up the 7 Mill.

I was a bit upset in years past when we had 8 or 9m left in cap space. Many of us were griping that we didn't save enough cap space this year with the way we structured recent contracts.
It looks like it was a good thing because now we have a ton of cap space for next year which means we can do everything we are hoping for and more.

P.S. Thanks Joeshmo!

Joe, does Matt going on IR have anything at all to do with his salary other than not hitting bonuses?

The reason I ask is because of this comment on Rotoworld about DeShawn Wynn:

Wynn disagrees with a doctor's assessment that it would take him till late in the season to heal from his neck and shoulder. Still, the Packers likely made the move so that the beat-up and seemingly fragile back could strengthen his body for next season. Part of Wynn's frustration likely stems from the fact that the move cost him a third of his salary.

Would a 7th round draft pick really have a third of his salary in incentives? It sounds like they suggest he won't get paid for the third of the season he'll miss. Is that just Rotoworld talking out their a?

I don't think that he hits any of his escalators this year, which includes playing time.

Right joe?

Well I know that article is not talking about deducting a 3rd of his salary, thats for sure. It is probably talking about the fact that he cant earn a 3rd of his "what he could have earned" salary. Yes a 7th rounder could have that built in, not common but has happened in the past. It cant be talking about losing game checks like you suggest either becuase if he is on IR he gets full game checks.

Same situation for Matt. His salary is at the base veteran minimum for a junior season. Then incentives, escalators, and so on are added on top of that depending on what he earned. As for what he earned this season, or he also could have also earned something last season that counts towards this next season salary as well, I am not sure yet. I just know it wont be as high as it would have if he wasnt placed on IR.

Not sure. He could have earned some incentives or escalators that rose his salary for the next 3 years from playing time last season. Incentives and escalators are the hardest items to find as they are usually put under lock and key. I just know that his salary will be lowr then what it could ahve been having been on IR this season.
