My top 5 Best/Worst all-time

Best #1 picks

1) Ottis Anderson-all time leading rusher
2) Fitz-proved his worth as he led Cards to 1st Super Bowl with great post season
3) Simeon Rice-pass rusher deluxe, one of the best pure pass rushers ever
4) Eric Swann-people laughed at the selection, best pure talent I have ever seen at DT. Knee injuries ruined what could have been a HOF career
5) Luis Sharpe-10 starter at LT

Worst

1) Steve Pisarkiewicz-who? I remember watching him suck after Hart was injured against Dallas
2) Kelly Stouffer-why would you draft a QB to replace Neil Lomax?
3) Wendell Bryant-never had the desire to be good
4) Steve Little-great college kicker, the problem was he kicked off a tee
5) Randall Hill-traded a #1 to Miami for the "thrill" of watching him bust.

List your top 5

How about the 2004 draft all the way down the line. A pretty amazing weekend

Not so much #4,5,6 or7. I know a lot of people liked Smith. But the dude is the epitome of average.

Agreed on Step, Leckey and Navarre, but we are talking late round picks who did end up taking meaningful reps.

But Fitz, Dansby, Dockett and Smith in the 5th round (who was a key starter in the Super Bowl run at the very very least) is a pretty remarkable weekend. In hindsight, the best draft weekend in my 20 years of following the Cards.

Best- Beanie Wells last year

Worst- even though he didn't turn out great, the most mad i have been is when the Cards passed on Byron Leftwich.

Both wasted picks as they signed with the NY Jets of the AFL instead of the Cardinals.

Ken Kortas 1964

Played one season for the Cards.

3 number one picks and got one season of play combined.

I think in addition to the 2004 NFL Draft, the 2008 Draft was pretty amazing with some guys still developing...

DRC
Calais Campbell
Early Doucet
Tim Hightower

My personal favorite moment was the feeling when we drafted Leinart...I remember being pretty drunk from the night before and running downstairs jumping over other party goers to watch the draft...and waking everyone in the house up when he slid to the Cards at 10. Of course, it hasn't quite panned out (yet!) but just the feeling of getting someone that slid is amazing. Also the same with Beanie last year, but without the pre-partying :)

How about Clyde Duncan WR. 1984 I think. Predicted to be a 4th or 5th round pick. We take him in the 1st. Lasted only a few years.

Duncan was so bad we tried Cedric Mack (CB) at WR thinking he might be another Roy Green.

I think that's Jeff Gollin's all time favorite worst Cardinal first round selection.

Other Cards #1s they selected for other teams.

Dave Butz who played 14 years for the Redskins but only 13 games for the Cards and Ahmad Rashad(Bobby Moore).

MacArthur Lane was pretty good in GB

Great post! Enjoying the comments...

Rather than talk players I'll talk feelings and emotional reaction.

WORST-Trading back and taking Johnson & Pace. I went outside and wanted to woof! Felt sick the rest of the day. UGH!

BEST-DRC. I jumped in the air and yelled...YES!!!

SUMMARY-I am thankful I've lived long enough to see a Cardinal mgmt. that is prepared on draft day.

GO CARDS! :D

LOL I was just thinking about doing an all-time team of guys the Cards drafted but played as well or better for several years for another team.

Think I'll do that at lunch today.

Anyone remember...Anthony Bell/LB??

I think we took him w/the 5th over-all pick! :bang:The ESPN announcers were trying so hard to hold back their laughter as he was projected to go in the 4th to 5th round. I remember them frantically looking thru draft guides trying to find something/anything on the guy. He then signed a 5-yr. contract, did absolutely nothing, and ended up w/the Raiders. THANK GOD those days are over! GO CARDS!! :D

Found this for you Bucky:

The Cardinals' selection of Stouffer lifted a few eyebrows in that it was roundly assumed they needed more defensive help, and a number of quality defenders, including Reggie Rogers, Jerome Brown and Shane Conlan, were available.

Or maybe picking Stouffer made sense after all, in the context of a rumor that they were going to trade Neil Lomax, their starting quarterback of the last six seasons, to the Los Angeles Raiders. But no trade materialized, leaving Stouffer and Lomax somewhat perplexed.

''I was surprised,'' Stouffer said after his selection. ''I was very surprised.''

Speaking for Lomax, Leigh Steinberg, his agent, said from Los Angeles: ''We don't know anything. For Neil, this is, obviously, not very pleasant, when he keeps reading that he is going to be traded. I told him this morning to prepare to go back to St. Louis.''

Maybe he will stay there. Maybe he won't. ''That was not part of the decision making, in picking Stouffer,'' George Boone, the Cardinals' director of player personnel, said of the Lomax situation. ''I'm not trying to say there won't be a deal, but I don't think we're locked into it.''

George Boone! :bang:

I have two great memories of the 1st round which occured while I was on Vacation:

I took my wife who was my girlfriend at the time on a 7 day cruise. It just so happened that the Draft occured while we were out to sea. They only had 7 stations available in our cabin at the time and none of them carried the draft. My wife's nationality is Filipino but was born and raised in the States. Well pretty much 75% of the workers on the boat were Filipino so they were always super friendly to us. I happened to be talking with one of the Filipino Bar tenders and convinced him to look for ESPN on the TV for me. Sure enough he found it. An hour later that bar went from me and my wife sitting there alone to about 100 guys crowded around a 21" TV screen. Needless to say I was the hero and didn't have to pay for any of my drinks that day. The Cards ended up drafting Thomas Jones who at the time I thought was the perfect fit. The funny thing was watching all of the woman who were pissed that their men were watching the Draft while on vacation.

Then one year I was in Portugal on Vacation during the draft. Was in the middle of no where at a little bed and breakfast place on the coast that had a computer with a dial up connection. Was refreshing like crazy to try and get some results. Some how Matt Lienart kept falling. To my amazement he fell all the way to the Cards. I couldn't believe it and was dancing around in euphoria. All of the Europeans their thought I was some crazy American.

The pick of old #55 was a total reach no doubt, but he at least played, started & contributed for several seasons. He was far from a bust compared to some of the other clowns this team has drafted.

On offense just the list of RBs could take until tonight.
