Championship!!!!
The Cards let their first road win of the year slip away with a 28-31 overtime loss to the 49ers. The Cards held a 28-12 fourth quarter advantage, but quarterback Tim Rattay threw for two touchdowns in the final four minutes, also converting on both two-point after attempts to tie and send the game into overtime. The Niners won the toss and drove down to the Cards 14-yardline to set kicker Todd Peterson up for the 32-yard game-winning field goal.
1st Quarter
Cardinals 0 – Niners 0
A 7-yard pass from quarterback Josh McCown to Femi Ayanbadejo, followed by an 8-yard pass to tight end Lorenzo Diamond had the Cards sitting with good field goal position at the Niners 38-yardline on their opening drive. Instead, the 49ers came up with a 6-yard sack, followed by an illegal crackback penalty called against Larry Fitzgerald that set the Cards all the way back at their own 41-yardline looking at a 2nd and 31. A dropped pass by tight end Freddie Jones followed by an incompletion to Larry Croom forced the Cards to punt.
Tight end Aaron Walker broke free from linebacker Ray Thompson for an 18-yard completion from quarterback Tim Rattay on the Niners first offensive play of the game, but the Cards defense tightened up and forced the Niners to punt.
A delay of game penalty put the Cards in 3rd and long again, needing 13 yards for a first down on their second possession. McCown completed a 5-yard pass to Karl Williams but was still way short of the first down marker.
Safety Adrian Wilson and corner David Macklin came up with a big 3rd and 1 play, tackling running back Kevan Barlow for a three yard loss to force the Niners to punt with under four minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Kevin Williams fielded the punt on a bounce and took off for the sidelines when Shawntae Spencer stripped the ball from behind. Linebacker LeVar Woods recovered for the Cards at the Cards 30-yardline.
On two carries, Troy Hambrick picked up 9 yards bringing up a 3rd and 1 for the Cards. Hambrick’s next carry came up about six inches shy of the first down and the Cards elected to go for it with McCown picking up 8 yards and the first down on a quarterback keeper. An 11-yard pass to Williams got the Cards into 49ers territory before McCown hit Fitzgerald over the middle for a 23-yard gain to the Niners 16-yardline at the end of the first quarter.
2nd Quarter
Cardinals 14 – Niners 6
McCown finally threw his first touchdown of the season with a 16-yard lob pass to tight end Freddie Jones on the first play of the second quarter. The 8-play scoring drive covered 70 yards.
Safety Michael Stone showed great pursuit on the kickoff return to bring down Cedrick Wilson at the Niners 11-yardline.
Quarterback Tim Rattay completed four consecutive passes to move the Niners into Cards territory. On 2nd and 8 at the Cards 16-yardline, defensive end Calvin Pace dropped Rattay for the Cards first defensive sack of the game. On 3rd and 11, Rattay’s pass was broken up by Adrian Wilson and the Niners had to settle for a 37-yard field goal by Todd Peterson.
Both teams had quick three and out series and traded punts.
With 6:33 remaining in the half, the cards were pinned back at their own 4-yardline. The Cards gained only four yards before having to punt from their own endzone.
Following the punt, the Niners had excellent field position at the Cards 39-yardline with 4:59 remaining.
Defensive end Bertrand Berry sacked and forced a Rattay fumble that was recovered by rookie linebacker Karlos Dansby at the Cards 48-yardline. Smith rolled off a 16-yard gain on first down to move into 49ers territory. A 20-yard completion to Williams set the Cards up at the 16-yardline. A 12-yard run by Smith positioned McCown for his two-yard touchdown pass to Hambrick.
With 1:56 remaining, the Niners took over and marched 58 yards in 9 plays to set Peterson up for a 42-yard field goal to narrow the Cards lead 14-6 at the half.
3rd Quarter
Cardinals 14 – Niners 12
After a quick three and out on their first offensive possession of the third quarter, Scott Player’s 5o-yard punt was returned 71-yards by Arnaz Battle for a Niners touchdown. The two-point conversion for the tie was unsuccessful.
With 2:35 remaining in the third, the Cards committed their first turnover when McCown’s pass was deflected at the line of scrimmage and intercepted by Jamie Winborn at the Niners 45-yardline.
A 23-yard pass to tight end Eric Johnson over the middle advanced the 49ers to the Cards 15-yardline. On the next play, running back Jamal Robertson coughed up the ball which was recovered by Bertrand Berry.
McCown scrambled for a 5-yard gain on first down to end the third quarter.
4th Quarter
Cardinals 28 – Niners 28
McCown connected with Bryant Johnson for a 24-yard gain over the middle to spark a 7-play, 86-yard scoring drive culminating in a 10-yard touchdown run by Emmitt Smith. A 35-yard leaping catch by Fitzgerald at the 10-yardline led to the Cards third touchdown of the outing with just under 12 minutes remaining.
After holding the Niners to a quick three and out, the Cards extended their lead in four quick plays, ending in a 24-yard aerobatic catch by Fitzgerald, his first touchdown of his NFL career.
The Niners drove to the Cards 6-yardline and went for it on 4th and 6 when Rattay connected with Eric Johnson for the Niners first offensive touchdown of the day. Prior to giving up the touchdown, the Cards defense had held their opponents out of the endzone for thirteen straight quarters. Rattay ran it in for the two-point conversion to close within 8 with just over four minutes remaining.
The Niners defense held the Cards to a quick three and out.
With 2:48 remaining, Rattay took over at his own 28-yardline and drove the distance of the field, connecting with Brandon Lloyd for a 23-yard touchdown with 1:07 left. Rattay’s pass to Lloyd in the corner of the endzone on the two-point conversion tied the game at 28 apiece with 1:07 remaining.
The Cards were forced to punt, sending the game into overtime.
OVERTIME
The Niners won the toss and following Neil Rackers short kick, they started at their own 39-yardline.
The Cards defense held the Niners to a quick three and out but Darnell Dockett was called for a 15-yard questionable roughing the passer penalty for a fresh set of downs.
A 23-yard reception by Johnson advanced the Niners to the Cards 16-yardline. The Niners were flagged for holding to push them back to the 26-yardline. A 9-yard pass to Barlow, followed by a 3-yard Barlow gain set the Niners up for Peterson’s 32-yard game-winning field goal.
