Most rookies are going to struggle...heck, it took most of them a year or two to assimilate into the college game. This is why it's up to the coaches to develop these players and bring them along.

The thing about this year's class is that it's possible all five of them will be solid contributors in their first year...the first three all look like starters: RT Brown; NT Branch; LB Davis. PR Breaston and TE Patrick should be decent role players.

All of them will struggle at times...that's the nature of the game. But, as Frederick Douglass so aptly stated: "Without struggle, there is no progress."

I really only expect two things out of Steve Breaston this year:

1. No fumbles on returns
2.

well, make that one thing

I expect nothing from him. He's here as competition for J.J. as KR and as the PR. B.J. is the #3 receiver period. I doubt if Whis has many 4 receiver packages. McCoy and/or Spurlock are #4 on the depth charts. If McCoy can't stay healthy he's outta here.

With Bryant Johnson not being able to practice (hammy) the coaches went with a special teamer, Sean Morey, as the third WR. This tells me that they are not satisfied with the depth at the position, and maybe that's why they signed Ahmad Merritt. Keep in mind that in recent years, Q, Fitz and BJ have all missed significant time with injuries. So after the Big Three, and two specialists, Breaston and Morey, I've been thinking that the fourth WR might be Matt Trammon. He has the size to become an able blocker, which is important in an offense dedicated to the run. If he shows anything as a receiver, IMO, he could make the final 53.
Overanalyzing IMO.

It tells me, that the new coach wants the hardest worker from his old team to set the pace in practice. Plus he knows the system.

The Cardinal's already have a solution at 3rd WR; his name is Bryant Johnson!

1. Bryant Johnson is hurt

2. He only has one more year left on his deal.

3. Johnson is the 3rd best WR on the team, but that doesn't mean he's the best 3rd WR. He very simular in style to Boldin and Fitz and the best compliment to Boldin and Fitz might be a quick and shifty slot WR. Breaston fits that role better than Johnson, despite not being as good a WR.

Its nothing serious. As much as everyone wants hate on BJ he is still one of the top few 3rd WRs in the game.

Excellent point! The fact is that he is behind two very good, pro-bowl caliber receivers (wonder how the third Manning brother feels) and he was drafted in the first round way ahead of Anquan Boldin. I'll admit to being disappointe0d in him at times, but he's also made some excellent plays in the recent past. He's improved every year IMO, and now if he can just become more consistent, and possibly with better coaching, improve even more overall this season, I'll be a happy camper.

However, I can't dismiss the point about needing a quicker smaller receiver to balance our WR corps. Whatever happened to Troy Walters?

B Johnson as a #3 WR is nothing like Fitz and Q. But, he will not get the same opportunity with HC Whiz. He won't be worth the money to the Cardinals.

artp, I'm not arguing that Johnson is in the class of Q and Fitz, and Whiz might not employ a lot of three WR formations. But because of injury concerns/possibilities the 3rd WR is very essential to this (and every) team.

To quote Frederick Douglas on a football forum is like Femi catching a TD pass from Emmit Smith. Impressive!
