Mitch hasn't been this excited about a team since 2002.

Enthsiasm! Passion! Talent?

Maybe not so much.

You do remember the 2002 team went.................. 5-11. :D

One thing about all these one year deals: I don't think we have a large group of free agents in 2014 so they won't be piled on top of the guys who would normally have reached FA. One benefit of DWash being extended and Big Dan being on a 5 year from the 2010 draft. Andre Roberts is about the only FA we might want to keep.

Oh darn how thoughtless of me. I'm really sorry K9 I forgot all about Jim Dray. :D

Completion percentage isn't a very good stat to use on a backup QB because he hasn't gotten consistent enough playing time or 1st string practice time to get an any real rhythm. He did get a few starts in 2010 and completed 58% of his passes that year as well as completed 64% of his passes at MSU. Brian Hoyer completed 56% at the same school as the QB that took over for Stanton.

Don't buy that at all. Same excuse I used for Skelton. We saw how that worked out.

Mitch, two excellent posts. Most encouraging thing for me was not allowing a player to leave that they wanted. The draft is going to be very interesting. BA is also smart enough not to show his hand. While Keim, Licht and BA were working the free agent interviews and deals; Tom Moore, Goodwin and others were at the college pro days evaluating the players. That is teamwork and trust.

Skelton doesn't really compare because he doesn't have any history of accuracy. He completed only 56% of his passes in college compared to 64% by Stanton which included one year in which he completed 67%.

I appreciate and understand that, Jeff.

My feeling is this---I wanted to see stronger communication, a much more concerted and intelligent plan and a much higher level of commitment to putting all the puzzle pieces in place.

Like you said---it's only all on paper right now.

But---I think the chemistry on this team will be better than ever, because the communication and teaching will be better than ever---and the effort from everyone in the building will be better than ever. It already is. What an EFFORT these guys are making!

And as long as the effort and enthusiasm is there, I am happy, because eventually persistent effort will bring great rewards.

As we know the other coaches and GMs in the NFC West are not short on effort and enthusiasm---but I feel like we've made some giant steps in bridging that gap in a very short time.

At this point I am still not sure whether we can win in the NFC West 9their systems and personnel have been in place longer), but I am already convinced it won't be for a lack of effort, preparation and enthusiasm...and after what we've been through for the past three years, this is especially exciting.

Correct Amundo Mitch-----I too don't know whether we will be able to win against SF & SEA, but I do believe that if we lose to them, it will be because they have more talent, not because we didn't play hard.

I am thrilled that these new FA's are gym-rat types, and that they work tirelessly. I am even more amazed that in their short time together, (during the signing/testing period), they seemed to already have developed a common bond with each other, and meshed well together during their short time in Phoenix. That tells me that they all believe in what is happening here, and they all believe they can help, and that they want to be a part of what is about to happen here in the desert.

There is an obvious respect for the way the FO and STAFF handled these guys, and they have responded in a very positive way. I am thrilled simply because we have filled a lot of holes with very positive thinking, and confident players, who believe in what the FO and STAFF are doing. I am also thrilled that these players are a near perfect fit to fill the holes that were left after the subtractions, and that they set us up very well to go into the draft. Cardinal Football is about to become fun to watch again, even when we don't win, because the players will be laying it all on the field, and that I can accept, and live with.

That crap team we had in 2012, you know the one that was so bad the Cardinals need to replace all but about 5 guys, beat Seattle last year. No reason we can't beat them this year. And remember John Skelton? The worst QB to ever play in the NFL? The Cards beat SF in 2011 with him at QB. So no reason we can't beat them this year.

BA specifically said in his interview on azcardinals.com that he will start at OLB. He never mentioned anything about MLB/ILB.

Well in that case nevermind. I feel much better.

A career special teamer is supposed to be our starting OLB.

Everyone needs to calm down with all these "Keim is doing a great job!" and FA Rocks! threads.
:

Why?------Even a moron can see the difference that having a true GM in the FO has made for this franchise. Every one of these players taken in FA has been targeted for a specific position, and has a specific skill-set. Being what? getting burned on deep routes? Being one of the worst tackling LBs in the NFL? THis is the dumbest comment. "Specific skill set". They have been signed prudently, and more specifically------they have been signed quickly. So------explain to me just why we need to calm down. NO FO that the Cards has ever had, has acted so quickly, decisively, or with more singular purpose than this bunch has. What does signing quickly have to do wit hanything? We couldve signed a bunch of grandmas quickly, that doesnt mean their any good That alone is reason for joy and excitement to be prevalent at this time. Normally we would be another week out from our FIRST signing of someone's castoff that no one else wanted. yeah if you have the patience of a 5 year old

I am so damned happy right now, that I don't even care if we don't finish better than 5-11 again. We have a bunch of players in the fold who WANT to play for this franchise, and a coaching staff who embraces, (and who cherishes), each of those players. That has not happened here before. I should just stop right here because this takes the cake. "I dont care whether or not we improve, im just happy we have new people on the roster who WANT to win".......Id rather have people on the roster who want to win and DO win.

It's always been a one way street with players giving,-----but coaches who were so ego-centric that all they did was use, use, use, then discard. I simply feel that THIS set of players and coaches will work TOGETHER, just like the FO, the SCOUTS, and the COACHING STAFF, did to make this Free Agent season successful. This isnt FUll House. I dont care if they all hate each other as long as they win

This looks to be a hard playing bunch who will make it fun to watch Cardinals Football, even when they don't win theres an oxymoron for you. They will play hard, and they will compete, and when they fall short, it will not be for lack of effort or coaching. It will be because the opponent was just more talented. I fully expect our talent level to improve as Keim, Licht, and BA work to get better each year, and soon enough, we will be back in contention for bigger things. Meanwhile, I have a very happy heart, knowing that THIS Cardinals team is already different from those past.

Your pessimism is underwhelming. :trout: At least wait for games to be this negative already. I'd bet that at least two of the above you trash have a very solid season.

Im not being pessimistic, Im being mellow and realistic.

Keep in mind this thread is called "Cardinals Carpe-ing the heck out of Diem!!!!!"

Somebodies at about at 10 right now, we need to be down around 4.

Nice try. But Skelton completed 61.4% his Junior year and 64.4% his Senior year at Fordham. As you would want, Double Dunce got better every year.

The thing that doesn't show for Skelton from his college stats is his TD/INT ratio. He had 26TDs to only 10 INTs at Fordham. Stanton was 12/10. Yet DD was an interception machine for Arizona.

Another thing to consider that bothered scouts was Skelton's low completion ration in regards to the competition he faced prior to the draft :)

For some reason ESPN is only showing 3 years of college for Skelton..

That brings Skelton's college % up to 58.8% and Stanton's is still over 64% and Stanton was playing against much tougher competition.

Have we heard from anyone other then Horton that he could have gotten Turner? There is no way in hell he doesnt end up in Cleveland coaching with his son from everything I read. I dont want people to keep just spouting this as fact when I am pretty sure it wasnt the case.

Mitch I love you but the only thing this off season has seized is a colostomy bag filled with stinkiness.

Agreed. Every signing is just a different version of the same crap Whiz gave us.

But......

We are going to suck next year anyways. 4 or 5 guaranteed losses in-division and then another 6 to 7 losses out of division is my guess. That gives us a range of 6-10 to 4-12. I can't imagine it getting any better than that.

Which again puts us out of #1 QB range... GRAB GENO IF THERE!

Walking the Walk:

Cardinals' HC Bruce Arians has said emphatically, "I want to win now."

Talk is talk...but he and GM Steve Keim...are walking the walk (make that "sprinting the sprint") in conducting their own whirlwind 3 Day FA Draft in March.

The 49ers may have 14 picks in the upcoming college draft in April.

Yet, the Cardinals, when all is said and done are likely to have close to 14 FA picks of their own, to go with their 7 picks in the draft.

Cardinals FA Draft To Date:

Round 1---2008: RB Rashard Mendenhall (5-10, 225, 5, 25, Illinois).

Round 1---2008: CB Antoine Cason (6-1, 195, 5, 26, Arizona)

Round 2---2007: QB Drew Stanton (6-3, 243, 6, 28, Michigan St.)

Round 3---2009: DE Matt Shaughnessy (6-5, 285, 4, 26, Wisconsin)

Round 3---2009: CB Jerraud Powers (5-10, 187, 4, 25, Auburn)

Round 3---2009: FS Rashad Johnson (5-11, 204, 4, 27, Alabama)

Round 5---2009: LB Jasper Brinkley (6-1, 252, 4, 27, South Carolina)

Round 6---2003: SS Yeremiah Bell (6-0, 205, 9, 35, Eastern Kentucky)

UCFA---2005: LB Lorenzo Alexander (6-1, 244, 6, 29, California)

Arians describes all of these plays as "gym rats" all of whom bring great passion and a love of the game in addition to something unique in each of them.

When you look at this group collectively, what stands out in addition to what BA has been saying about the group is how physical this group is. The front 7 on defense, in particular, looks like it is going to be a physical force to be reckoned with. All of the front 7 additions are very good tacklers---and as we know good tackling is contagious---and as we know, Ray Horton made good strides in improving the team's tackling, but there is still a need for significant improvement. Yermiah Bell, for example, may seem like a meh pick, but this guy is a fundamental stick hard and wrap tackler. He's also a leader. He was Todd Bowles defensive captain with the Dolphins.

According to ESPN Insiders' FA Ratings:

CB Antoine Cason---5 in run support (he is their highest rated CB)---4 in Ball Skills---4 in Man Coverage
CB Jerraud Powers---3 in run support---4 in Ball Skills---4 in Ball Skills---4 in Man Coverage.

Note: BA said that he wants CBs with Ball Skills---and we have seen that this has been an area that has needed improvement...particularly from our #2 and #3 CBs.

S Yeremiah Bell---4 in run Support---4 in Ball Skills---4 in Speed---2 in Man Coverage (which is Ok because he won't be playing in the nickel and dime packages).

S Rashad Johnson---4 in Run Support---3 in Ball Skills---4 in Zone Coverage.

LB Jasper Brinkley---5 in Run Support---5 in Tackling---4 in Diagnostic Skills---2 in Coverage Skills (again, OK, because he's a 2 down player whose forte is stopping the run). What I liked too about Brinkley, whom I wanted in several of my mock drafts 4 years ago, was the edge rush ability he flashed at South Carolina, when they shifted him over there---a bull rusher with good feet and the ability to shed quickly and get to the ball.

LB Lorenzo Alexander---one of the best and most physical tacklers on the market---what BA is counting on is for Tom Pratt to turn him into a prolific edge rusher.

DE Matt Shaughnessy---5 in Run Defense---4 in Pass Rush---4 in Recognition---4 in Quickness.

When you read the blurbs on all of these guys---the common term you see is: "high-effort player."

On the offensive side:

RB Rashard Mendenhall---5 in Speed---4 in Change of Direction---4 in Vision---3 in Pass Catching---4 in Blocking---3 in Durability. What BA said about him is noteworthy---"he's a guy who has the power to smash into the line and yet he has the feet of an 180 yard back to hit a home run---and he is a 3 down RB who can do it all as a pass receiver and as a blocker."

As for the one-year contract, the highly-motivated Mendenhall will have to prove he's at 100% and if he is and he's productive, the big long-term contract could follow.

Clearly he wants to play in Arizona and play for BA.

QB Drew Stanton---BA said of him that "he has a cannon of an arm---and I have never seen a QB improve his footwork and mechanics so quickly as Stanton did last year---I had to beg him some days in practice to throw an interception because he was lighting it up against our defense---and DE Cory Redding said, this is why we loved him in Detroit---he's the man."

BA also lauded Stanton for how hard he prepares.

The fact that BA loved his experience with Stanton is an excellent starting point. It should be very interesting to see what Stanton can do.

Stanton has one very important thing going for him---his HC has confidence in him. That's something we Cardinal fans have got to start to get used to!

Carpe Keim and The Brand New Cardinal Red Colored Pen:

Did you ever think the Cardinals' FO could have a distinct plan and multi-task the way Keim, Licht and BA have over the past few days?

Where once we as fans had to cringe at the thought of a FA visit knowing how many times FAs left town without a deal---this year a visit means only one thing: sign on the dotted line.

Jerraud Powers said, "My agent tried to prepare me for FA visits by telling me how teams will not want to let me out of the building---so I told BA that and how I had promised the Chargers I was going to visit them and BA told me we are not letting you out of the building---that's just the way BA is---he wasn't going to let me leave with a brand new Cardinal red pen in my hand."

Rashard Mendenhall said that the process with BA, SK and the Cardinals felt like "college recruiting all over again."

Mendenhall talked about the excitement in the building especially amongst all the free agents there that day---and how he already started to bond with the other free agents.

For me---this is a dream come true---I couldn't possibly see why Arizona wouldn't be a hot spot for NFL free agents---it's got everything going for it---the weather---the beautiful stadium---the rabid and loud fan base---

BA and Steve Keim have put the fun back into being an Arizona Cardinal. The way they communicate---the way they wear their hearts on their sleeves---the way they exude enthusiasm and confidence---the swagger now starts at the top---and this is, like the band Chicago sings: "only the beginning."

Plus---look at the contracts the players signed---did you even in your wildest dreams think the Cardinals could be this contract savvy? And at the same time---garner such enthusiastic interest from players who clearly think they are worth a lot more than what they are getting?

The point is---these players know and trust---just as Drew Stanton said to MJ and Bickley---if I prove myself, the money will come.

Draft Preparation---MB: "We are not going to reach anymore."

What these signings do is set the Cardinals up beautifully for the draft.

What we can likely expect is 5 offensive players and 2 defensive players (OLB, S).

Draft Board at #7

T Luke Joeckel
T Eric Fisher
T Lane Johnson
G Chance Warmack
OLB Dion Jordan
OLB Ziggy Ansah
OLB Barkevious Mingo

Chances are our #7 pick is one of these players.

I have a hunch that the Cardinals will be more inclined to take an edge rusher at #7 because there will be much better offensive line talent at #38 than OLB talent....especially if Joeckel and Fisher are off the board.

Offensive line talent at #38:

T/G D.J. Fluker (perhaps a long shot, but you never know)
G Larry Warford
C/G Barrett Jones
T Menelick Watson
G/T Justin Pugh
T/G Kyle Long
T Terron Armstead

This is not a case of "sprinting the spint", this is a case of "the art of tanking, without tanking".

If we win more than 4 games this year, I'll eat boot soup.

haha... gotta agree. A lot of people keep crowing about the speed and ability to get a lot of guys signed to cheap, not to mention short contracts, while completely leaving out that most of the guys we signed were back-ups or at the end of their careers... who pretty much only get cheap/short contracts. Powers was a decent move, Cason is good depth but everyone else? Pretty much career backups or guys who have had little to no impact on the league.

Look, it's VERY savvy to sign a 30 year old career special teamer and promise him a starting job for his 7th year in the league.

We know stuff about this guy and his just over 1 sack per season for his career that no one else has figured out.

Including Rashad Johnson we have signed 9 players. Of those 9 players 1 is "at the end of his career" and that is Bell. Of those 9 3 have been career backups (Johnson, Stanton and Alexander). Mendenhall has started 47 of his last 53 games. Shaughnessy started all 16 games last year. Powers has started every game of his career. Cason has started 45 of his last 48 games played. Brinkley started 15 of 16 games last year.

Somehow however, most of these guys are "career backups" or at "the end of their careers"? Alexander is a career backup, but last year was his first year at his current weight as he lost 30 lbs prior to the 2012 season. Stanton has been stuck behind Stafford and Luck throughout his career (still an unknown, but I'm not expecting big things). Rashad Johnson has continued to improve and get more responsibility over his last couple seasons and I wouldn't be at all surprised if he plays at least solid as a starter next season. Bell is the only guy that is in the "end of their career" category, but he has started 78 of his last 80 games and hasn't missed a game in 5 seasons (maybe that means he can give us 1 solid year at SS?).

You're right... I should have said career backups (Johnson, Alexander and Stanton), players at the end of their career (Bell), damaged goods (Mendenhall), and two decent pickups in Powers and Cason and two relatively non-impact starters from the Raiders and Vikings that didn't even end up on any top 100 FA list. Was my statement a generalization? sure... but it doesn't change the fact that going out and signing a bunch of guys who don't have a lot value in the league for cheap contracts doesn't really wow me all that much.

just feels like to me... people here are going gaga over quantity without caring for the quality of the haul.

Since when is a guy with one major injury in his history an ACL injury and only 25 YOA damaged goods? SERIOUSLY? Have you heard of guys like Frank Gore, Garrison Hearst etc... etc.. their is tons of great RB's who have been more then fine after ACL's this isnt the 70s... an ACL doesnt warrant that label at all in todays day and age. JUST DOESNT no matter how much you try and spin it!

And try and tell Richard Seymour Shaughnessy is/was a non impact player: http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/94399/shaughnessy-bolsters-cards-line-rotation

Another young kid who had a great year before last and was still impactful last year in the run game.

when he comes back the next year, is total dog-crap, a club-house cancer and then his team wants nothing to do with him moving forward... even though he's only 25 years old.

sure i've heard of guys like that, but guys like weren't labeled club-house cancers, didn't follow up their ACL injuries by coming back to rush for a whopping 150 yards the next year and weren't kicked to the curb by their teams after the surgery, now were they?

their is tons of great RB's who have been more then fine after ACL's this isnt the 70s... an ACL doesnt warrant that label at all in todays day and age. JUST DOESNT no matter how much you try and spin it!

you're right... if he had only had an ACL tear that would be one thing. But his own team couldn't get rid of him fast enough and that franchise has a pretty good track record of knowing when to cut bait on players that don't have it anymore. A 25 year old running back, who's a club-house cancer, coming off an ACL tear is damaged goods. That ain't spin Shane.

And try and tell Richard Seymour Shaughnessy is/was a non impact player: http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/94399/shaughnessy-bolsters-cards-line-rotation

Another young kid who had a great year before last and was still impactful last year in the run game.[/QUOTE]

uh... wha? the year before last (2011) he had 1 sack and played in 3 games. Or are you talking about THREE years ago in 2010 when he had a good season? Sorry man, but a guy who played well in 2010 3 isn't an impact player IMO. If he was, why would he settle for a 1 year deal? Young impact defensive linemen don't settle for one year deals Shane.

Mitch, love your take on the Draft. But, after reading your possible picks at #38, I would like to see, assuming we go OL in the 1st round, who you think we would be considering at #38, if we select a defensive (as I think we will) player?

Let me be clear on this so K9 doesnt bring this up in 2015 and trys to put wordsin my mouth.

I DONT EXPECT WE ARE GOING TO BE VERY GOOD NEXT YEAR

So why am I optimistic and happy? Because I like what I have seen so far from Keim and Arians, because they have a plan and its east to understand, and I now realize just how bad Wiz and Graves were.

Shouldnt EVERYONE be feeling this way until proven otherwise? Are these Darksiders people who wanted to keep Wiz and Graves? What on earth actually makes you people happy?

I think Mitch is a little over the top with his OP but Im not sure even he is expecting 10 wins next year. Hes excited about what hes seen so far. So am I.

Some of you are miserable. Wonder what you are like in real life.

Yup! I don't expect a repeat of last year's disaster, but I also don't see a playoff berth either.

I expect an improved team that will be 'disciplined, physical, fast.' I expect an improved and healthier offensive line. I expect better coaching, especially on offense and special teams. I expect fewer injuries. I expect fewer reaches in the draft. I expect a transition period on both offense and defense. I expect a focus on third down offense and red zone offense. I don't expect a 59-0 debacle in Seattle.

I expect B.A. and Harold Goodwin will have better knowledge of the AFC South opponents than the rest of the division from their experience with Indy last season.
