The Cardinals could move on from Kevin Kolb next season with minimal financial ramifications, according to NFL Network's Jason La Canfora.

Kolb is due a $7 million roster bonus in March that could be declined by the Cardinals if they decided to cut their losses. He also has a $9 million salary and $2 million roster bonus in 2013 that can be voided with limited salary cap ramifications. Arizona has yet to indicate a change in their long-term plans with Kolb, who's missed significant time this season with injuries. He's currently set to count $10.5 million against the 2012 cap.

That just says the Cards could release Kolb without any salary cap problems if they wanted to. Not that they are considering cutting him.

It's hard to believe the Cards used a top 10 first round pick on a QB and then gave up a starting CB and 2nd round pick for another and right now have nothing to show for it.

Isn't Drew Brees an FA? I'm not sure he's an upgrade over Kolb but I'd be willing to give him a chance.

Steve

I would cut every QB on the roster if it meant getting Drew Brees; however, even though he has cut off contract talks with the team, there is a slim-to-none chance he hits the open market. Nawlins will re-sign him, or franchise him.

Sounds like La Canfora learned about the details of Kolb'scontract and is simply mentioning some of the organization's options moving forward. Unless doctors think he can't play another down in the NFL, the team will bring him back.

Is this a comment typed with a straight face?? Just asking. But Drew Brees is a top 3 QB in the league and Fitz would probably catch 130 passes for 2000 yards with him at the helm. I would trade the entire draft for Drew Brees and/or cut quite a few players for him.

Well.......

What if Skelton wins again today? It's an awful lot of money to pay Kolb if you are not absolutely sure he has what it takes.

Will Skelton continue to improve? And if we did severe ties with Kolb (which ain't gonna happen) where and who would we turn to? Another new QB that would have to learn the system albeit witha proper off season?

Face it ..Kolb is our #1 qb like it or not. The only way he doesn't start is because of injury. Now if he were to miss the rest of the season and Skelton was to win out and get us to the playoffs, that would really make things interesting.

Either way Graves needs some praise for making a contract that can be jettisoned loose if they need to. Although I highly doubt that he is cut. Nor do I think he should be.

Yeah, me too but that's not too hard to imagine. I'm sure he'll stay in New Orleans but OTOH, I was sure the Chargers wouldn't get rid of him so what do I know. I'm just dreaming a little now that we finally have a defense coming together. It would be nice to see our offense move in the same direction.

ESPN just reported that Kevin Kolb will be the starter in 2012...The Cardinals want to give him a full off season and get him into the weight room.

Sando was on the local radio talking about this scenario recently.

He said something about them being able to cut him based on performance/skills, but not for injury/injuries.

Seriously misleading indeed. But if actually comes to fruition, then some FO people and Whiz have to go. Trade a PB CB (albeit hasn't done much w/ PHI) AND a #2 for a guy who you release after 1 year would be a disaster of epic proportions.

The Chargers drafted Philip Rivers a couple of years before letting Brees go. I believe the writing was on the wall for a while.

I agree about the offense, even though I think it'll take the offseason for everyone to gel.

Holy misleading thread title Batman!

Completely. Mods, please change ASAP. This is basically a statement of financial ramifications and options that DID NOT come from the team.

The Cardinals have made zero indication they are considering anything of the sort, or that it is remotely on the table.

Shane, the rules of this board say you can't praise Graves, you can only villify him.;)

Disagree completely. There are no sure things in the NFL. Look at Haynesworth. If you are going to start firing people every time a mistake in player personnel is made, you are going to be in trouble. FA's/draft work out less than 50% of the time. You take your chances. You win some, you lose some, but you try to keep going in an upward direction.

The Cards were smart in that they hedged their bet on Kolb and can get rid of him without too much monetary damage if they so desire.

Ya because you'd never want to give them their props for at least making an attempt to up-grade the team. :sarcasm:

Hey I for one didn't want KK, but the "old Cardinals" would have just sat back and let the chips fall where they may. This trade to me is an indicment that they will not just sit on the hands when it comes to making a risky move.

Props to Whiz, Graves, and Mike B, for making this trade that I did not agree with, it gives me the indication that we have moved into the 21st century with most other NFL teams.

One other thing about Kolb that bothers me is that this is his 5th year in the NFL without starting more than 10 games in one season. Has there ever been a QB who was around that long without starting more than 10 games in one season who went on to be a top QB?

Trent Green maybe? But then he started 14 games for the Redskins his 5th season with 23TD passes to 11interceptions. Dan Fouts took a while to get going but he had started 39 games going into his 5th season. Steve Young started 14 games in Tampa his second season. Others?

Seems to me that a QB just can't sit around that long and develop into anything above average. Or it could be that if a QB hasn't been able to take over the reins of a team within 2-3 seasons he'll never really get a chance to do so.

Kolb will be the starter in 2012 with Skelton the backup. The key with the contract would be 2013, if Kolb doesn't produce next season he could be cut.
