"The Cardinals and the agent for inside linebacker Karlos Dansby have opened negotiations for a new contract in the hopes a deal can be struck before free agency begins at the end of the month. Agent Kirk Wood met with General Manager Rod Graves during the playoffs, Wood said, and the two have talked on the phone since. Wood said negotiations are in the preliminary stages and declined to discuss details.

Dansby played under the franchise tender of $8.065 million last season and is believed to be seeking a deal worth more than the six-year, $42 million contract that Calvin Pace signed with the Jets last spring. That contract included about $20 million guaranteed.

The Cardinals could use the franchise tag on Dansby again, guaranteeing him about $9.7 million in 2009, but severely restricting his options in free agency."

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he is moved to OLB if we bring in Butler. If thats the case, his agent will probably try to pry a little extra money from Graves. Hopefully they won't make, or even mention a move to OLB until the contract is done.

Why?

I don't understand this logic for two reasons.

1. Who would you put in place of Dansby. The WILB in a 3-4 has to be able to play the run, rush the passer, and cover in the passing game. Dansby does all three extremely well. That kind of player is very hard to find, and the position is made for a guy like Dansby.

2. I have never seen Dansby take on a OT. Why would we start doing that now ?

No chance IMO. Dansby is the prototypical WILB in a 3-4. He doesn't shed blockers well, but is a sideline to sideline tackling machine who excells in dropping back and distrupting passing lanes as well as sneaking an inside blitz a few times a game. If it aint broke dont fix it.

I was just thinking the same thing. Look at the Steelers defense. Their playmakers are the outside backers. Put Dansby on the outside, Beisel in the middle next to Hayes with AW playing pretty much as a 5th linebacker to help them out, and Dansby would wreak havoc. That's where the Steelers are great. They get good push up the middle, but excellent rush from the outside.

The thing we'd need is a better 3rd safety than Francisco to cover for AW being up on the line and also a NT that can take on 2 blockers to keep Hayes and Beisel free.

I love B-Train for his loyalty and heart, but Dansby would give a much better pass rush from the outside than he would, and he'd defend the screens and swing passes and reverses much better than Burt. Our run D and pass D would be much improved.

That said, are there any good MLB's coming out in the draft that would be good for our 3-4?

Dunno if you noticed but he played ALOT in the SB and actually played pretty well.

He'd need to be protected, no doubt. That's why I said for this to be a great move, we need a NT to keep blockers off him and a 3rd safety that can protect the middle along with AW. If we have that, he doesn't have to be spectacular, hell he can be average and we'd be ok.

Beisel played a lot in the SB, which surprised me to the point of looking for who was on the field because I thought someone was injured, and he did alright.

Yeah, he did a pretty good job filling in for Dansby last year too. Monty is all good in my book.

In Pittsburghs scheme the outside guys are the better athletes, they drop into coverage, and blitz. Dansby is by far the most athletic linebacker we have. Would probably need to bulk up a little, to be ideal.

Could Highsmith be an answer? I don't know enough about to know if he'll be a good fit. But what i've seen from him last year he looked pretty impressive. Too bad he missed half a season's learning though...

I have always enjoyed watching teams in the off season positioning their teams for the next season. But this year is unbelievable, amazing what a Super Bowl does.
