Cardinals looking into acquiring Blaine Gabbert?

Personally I like the idea of kicking the tires on Gabbert. He was a five star recruit coming out of high school, was a top 10 draft pick after three yrs at Missouri, and he's only 27 years old. He's had some injuries and played for some bad teams, but his talent is obvious. Who knows what a year under Palmer, Arians, and Moore could do for him. Might just need the right situation. Kick the tires, bring him in, what do we have to lose?!

What is this talent you speak of? His mobility which is the only thing he's good for?

Well enough talent to make him a five star recruit and a top ten pick in the NFL draft. He has a strong arm and is mobile. He's played for some garbage teams, and several coaches. Right now we have a veteran QB willing to mentor and probably the best QB coaches in the game with no one to develop. Stanton has been in our system for a couple of years now and is hardly competent. Like I said, what is there to lose? Who else is out there for this staff to work with? The situation is ripe for another QB to step in and possibly reach his potential.

How about a list of QB's who were drafted in the 1st round in the last ten years and aren't even in the league now? Gabbert has potential and that's all I'm saying. We have nothing to lose. There is no science to finding a QB and at this point we're best off exploring all options.

Testaverde was a mess early on, but got better over time...
Alex Smith has played better under good coaching...
Trent Green wasn't much until later...
Rich Gannon...same as Green...

It's not unheard of for an underperforming QB to get better with good coaching and a winning organization.

We have a winner right here. Although the avatar will give me a nightmare he's correct. Gabbert is very talented but maybe drafted way too high. I know Whiz liked him. Oh wait is that a good thing?

Anyway I saw flashes of a good qb last year with Gabbert at the helm. When Gabbs came out of the draft I expected a lot more but yeah he's played on crappy teams? Send Stanton to the 9ers please.

I'm a fan of Gabbert. He's had the worst career luck of any QB ever, except maybe Greg Cook who blew out his arm in his rookie season while leading the league in passing. Next HC and system will be his 8th and he's 27. Same age as Dysert, 5 years younger than Stanton. I don't think that Brady, Rogers, Manning, Roethlisberger, and Brees have had 8 different HCs between all of them combined. Both years Blaine split the S.F. job with Kap he had better W/L record and the team averaged more points per game when he was calling signals. I think Kelly benched Gabbert last year to show he wasn't "racist" which was the label following him from Philly. Also to try to get Baalke fired, because he knew Trent loved Gabbert and hated Kaepernick. Turns out they both got canned and both QBs are free agents. But the team was better with BG and had a better vibe.

I don't have faith in Palmer taking us to the promise land. His playoff performances speak for themselves. I don't hate him, he has been great in regular season games. If he stays healthy and takes us deep in he playoffs, great. I just don't see it. I hope so, but I don't see him staying healthy. I think he will take his 24 mil this year and ride off in the sunset. Once you ponder retirement for months like he did, you have basically retired. We have to have a plan B for this year, who(m) ever that is. I couldn't care less which college he comes from, I just want the Cards to have the best QB in place to take his place.

What I think or at least hope:

BA has different job specs for his starting/backup QB's

He may also view this QB crop as more vulnerable to injury and be more inclined to keep an extra veteran QB on the roster "just in case."

If we were to sign Gabbert, it might be strictly as a backup (with backup specs)

Within that context, BA may have seen correctable areas of improvement that Gabbert's previous coaches may have missed.

True. Could be wishful thinking, but maybe not.

Note: Job specs for backup QB: We can win more than half our games with him in there...Protects the ball...Doesn't miss wide open opportunities...Gives everyone the sense that "this game is winnable" and "this play will work"...provides a spark.

Maybe, but in 2013, Blaine Gabbert had the highest Wonderlic score of any NFL QB at 42. Better than Brady, Rogers, Luck, Brees, and Peyton. So the aptitude is there.

By comparison, Palmer had one of the five lowest at 26.

So the moral of the story is... Wonderlic scores mean absolutely nothing in determining the success of an NFL quarterback.

That's where things blew up between Kelly and Baalke.

The Wonderlic is by no means correlative to a QB's future production, but few legendary QBs have had scores under 20.
