There is some sort of league rule that makes it advantageous for the team to make the signing on or after May 9. Forget the details, but the fact they haven't announced it yet may be due to that. Apparently Gabbert worked out for them on Thursday last week.

I believe it has something to do with the compensation pick formula. Wait to sign guys until after May 7th and you don't get dinged for picks next year.

Hopefully he doesn't bring the "Gabbert Curse". Every team he's played for in six NFL seasons has fired the coach at the end of the year. In his first season they fired HC mid season and let the interim coach go at the end of the year. :( So far, Del Rio, Mel Tucker, Mularkey, Bradley, Harbaugh, Tomsula, Kelly. Gabs is 27, waiting to work for his 8th NFL HC. He'll make a helluva OC once he retires.

Is the 2 years standard?
The way I look at this is. 4 years in the league beats hell out of a rookie. 40 games under his starters belt. Many teams have thrown big $$$ at more questionable free agents. QBs are a premium and the NFL is running out of them.

If this were March, maybe. But Blaine has been on the market for over two months, so clearly, there isn't much demand for his services. Additionally, there are still a few QBs with similar production that are on the FA market, which dilutes his value

The only reason he'd even get a second year would be because the team wants the 2nd year as insurance in case Palmer retires.

Palmer only had 5 more career starts than Gabbert at age 27. Surprising, since Carson was first overall pick.

I believe he is better than Stanton. Stanton is done. But, he will be there because he is one of BA's BFFs for some reason.

Totally agree. Stanton has stunk when he's had opportunities recently. Lobs scuds with incredible inaccuracy. Gabbert has played with garbage his whole career. Could be a completely different beast in the Cards' offense and with quality coaching.

If only he could turn out like Steve Young, who was completely overwhelmed and did nothing when he played for Tampa Bay early in his (NFL) career, only to be rescued by Bill Walsh, and wind up with a bust in Canton. We can dream can't we?

I think Blaine and Drew will be directly competing to be the main backup and the loser will be cut. Neither one will be 3rd QB...that will one of the youngsters on the roster.

I like it, now let the QB whispers whisper. Obviously they didn't speak Stantons language. Let him walk. I know its a long shot, but I could really see Gabbert developing under Palmer and this staff and becoming something to at least Palmers equal, which with a great running game and defense can contend. Let's go Cards!

If he can develop to be as good as Palmer, they can contend for a while, because he's a lot younger.

Based on the one-year $885K contract, seems like a low risk, medium ceiling situation here. I just remember the guy has pretty good speed for a QB (ran a sub 4.6 time, in comparison Kaep ran a high 4.5). I also remember seeing him scramble pretty well against us in the games last year. Accuracy is the biggest killer which more than likely can't be fixed. But hey, why throw when you can run for your life, or just hand the rock to DJ =) This likely signals that at least the coaching staff is evaluating mobile QBs and not just the statue-esque pocket passer a la Palmer. Worst case scenario is that we just covered our bases for a backup for this year.
