Walter Football had him as their 20th rated safety.

Antoine Bethea, S, 49ers. Age: 33.

Antoine Bethea used to be a talented player, but he has declined in recent years. The 49ers decided he wasn't worth the $5.75 million cap hit, and they're right. Bethea can still tackle well and not be a liability in run support, but he struggles to cover at this stage of his career.

You can do a lot worse than Bethea. Not down on the signing. One thing we lost with CC was a veteran presence and Bethea at least brings that.

Walter Football had Jefferson ranked 3rd, and Swearinger ranked 10th, btw.

No one should be surprised by this. We know this is what Keim does in free agency. Every year, he gets some under the radar vets onto the roster. some of them actually did well, some didn't work out.

It's certainly not a sexy or exciting signing. but, that does not make it "garbage".

I feel confident we'll resign Swearinger and Bethea is solid depth.

When I saw this signing, the thought crossed my mind that Bethea could be a back up to take some reps for Deone Bucannon. He would be good inside the box on TEs.

if he's just there as depth, fine... but if we lose Swearinger and Jefferson and this is the only replacement, that secondary will be in MAJOR trouble.

With exception to our re-up with Chandler Jones, FA could not have started off worse for us.. Let's sit back and see how the day/week plays out though

Free agency hasnt even officially started and people are already saying it's horrible?

Honestly, what did you expect? It was a foregone conclusion that Tony and CC were gone and that Jones would be tagged. Jones signing a 5-year deal was a pleasant surprise. So was Gresham.

If we re-sign Swearinger and wait for bargain deals, it will be fine. I'm more concerned with how Keim manages the draft, to be honest. 2016's class was awful.

yeah... if we get Swearinger back, all's not lost... but I wonder how attractive we'll be this year for the one year deal. The last couple years we've been either up and comers or Super Bowl contenders... getting those guys now might be a little more difficult as we're a bubble team in the eyes of pretty much anyone outside the Cardinals compound and this board.

and totally agree on the draft. We DESPERATELY need to get a first rounder who actually makes an impact this season.

The Cardinals were coming off a dumpster fire season when Keim initially took over as a rookie GM. That didn't seem to stop him from signing guys to one year prove it deals with a rookie Head Coach taking control of the team as well.

I'm OK with this signing.

Veteran leader who is familiar with BA and his staff. Won't count towards the Compensation formula since he was cut by the Niners.

I have to think Keim is signing Bethea for depth and leadership. As such, I do not have a problem with it.

I have been mulling this over, and there needed to be safety help for the CB opposite Patrick Peterson by the safeties. If we get a CB to play opposite Patrick Peterson, maybe you don't need a safety to cover that much of the field. We did need to improve against the run. Even if Bethea has to start, a lot of how the secondary plays is going to be impacted by that other CB slot. Arguably getting more quality there is more important than at safety. Bethea brings veteran experience, and he is a guy you can pencil in every Sunday.

We need to sign freaking Swearinger. Athletic, passionate and an enforcer on the field... we need him with some haste before other teams realize what the man can do when not a Texan!

FYI.

Its free agency on the ASFN Cardinals board, there is a good chance that every signing will be called garbage by someone. Matter of opinion.

Don't have a problem with this. 49ers had/have massive problems. I'm guessing he was released because a new regime wants to start over with some younger players. Maybe he doesn't fit their new system as well. They didn't need his cap space given how much they have.

Despite that, they've been cutting some decent players. Torrey Smith wasn't their problem, but they cut him too. He was snatched up quick by the Eagles as well.

Thus overall I think he's a regime change cut. Or at least hope.

We couldn't keep everybody, but have enough to pick and choose. We lose one guy, sign another for likely far cheaper. I didn't expect an upgrade at safety in free agency. We got a solid but aging vet with leadership abilities to fill a hole just created for less.

We might not be pleased with the overall situation and how we got here, but this counter move to TJ leaving imo is a decent play and I don't think I could realistically hope for more. He's gone, and we needed a replacement, and found one fast. At this stage I am just hoping we can make some solid, lower cost moves to dampen the blow of what we lose. I think this is one of those moves.

Hopefully we can re-sign DJ and find a youngster in the draft.

He's useless in coverage but good in run support. With the Cardinals losing Campbell, their gonna need help from their DBs to cover up the front so this isn't a bad signing.

It is tough to see the downside of this signing. Even if we are unable to re-sign Swearinger, it is a great S draft class and you have added a leader in the secondary.
