Draft guys that fits BAs system for TEs (block first & catch second)

C.J. Fedorwicz Iowa
Arthur Lynch Georgia

Both should be there on 3rd or 4th round.

I like this signing, depending on the guaranteed money. Carlson isn't a top TE by any means, but he's definitely an upgrade. Over the last 5 weeks of the season he averaged 4.2 catches for 56.6 yards. Certainly never going to be confused for a Pro Bowler, but if Housler ever puts it all together (which is looking less and less likely) we'll have a pretty solid TE combo.

Carlson has also been victimized by some pretty poor QB play between Ponder, Cassel, Whitehurst, and T. Jackson. During his two years with a decent QB he had solid production.

Sounds like we signed this year's version of Jeff King although Carlson is a bit more athletic and a better pass catcher. I guess this means no Jake Ballard. I'd still like ASJ in the draft.

I don't mind the signing, but I hope it is for depth and doesn't affect the draft. I think this offense should prioritize drafting a TE that can be a difference maker in both run and pass game.

He would still torch our defense. Great signing for practice!

With the TE's having 73 receptions* last season, one more than 2012, is that really the case? Or did the Cards have to amend their offense because the TE's they had were more receivers than blockers?

*Quite a change from the Warner days. Cards TE's had 23 catches in 2009 and 25 in 2008.

I think in 2012 the TE's were thrown too out of necessity, because the QB's couldn't hit a receiver. In 2013 they were thrown too out of design by the offense.

Contract Info From Sommer's blog

http://www.azcentral.com/insiders/k...inals-spend-the-weekend-preparing-for-guests/

–The Cardinals added one player last week, tight end John Carlson. The contract numbers are in: it’s a two-year deal worth a maximum of $4.65 million. It’s structured in such a way that the Cardinals aren’t risking much for a player with a history of concussions, and that Carlson can make decent money if he stays healthy and plays well.

In 2014, Carlson received a $100,000 signing bonus and will received another $100,000 roster bonus after the second preseason game. His base salary is $800,000. So if he stays healthy, he likely makes at least $1 million.

He can receive another $600,000 if he’s active for a certain amount of games. And there is additional $650,000 in not likely to be earned bonuses.

In 2015, Carlson will receive a $150,000 bonus if he’s on the roster in March. His base salary will be $1 million. So if he’s on the team, he’ll make at least $1.15 million. He can earn another $600,000 by meeting the active game requirement. There is an additional $650,000 in not likely to be earned bonuses.

I feel much better about this signing with the contract that Keim was able to negotiate.

So unless he blows up and activates the NLTBE clauses, if he stays on the roster it is in essence a 2 yr. 3.35 mill deal. Not bad. I wonder if those NLTBE are treated any differently now under the new CBA?

Under the old one....I think the NLTBE does not count against the cap, but if they are met, they subtract from next year's capspace, but LTBE do count and if they aren't met they add to your capspace next year. The eagles do/used to do this to carry cap over perpetually from one season to the next.

So if it is still like that, then he probably counts 1.6 mill this year and 1.75 next year against the cap. Unless of course he hits those NLTBE clauses.

Unless I got that wrong lol.

edit: Oh I don't know if this was originally posted, but it was nestled in an NFL.COM article about JV being a good fit for us. It's a good video (or ONE play) that showcases his athleticism, feet, and ability to stretch out for a TD.

I'm hoping he hits those NLTBE clauses- I hope they are for blocking and team success!
