From his statistics I don't see how he is just average. Even for his 2017 numbers.. Lets say that each team has ~3 cornerbacks that play often, that is 96 cornerbacks in the NFL playing significant minutes...

According to Probowel Focus In 2016 they ranked him the 16th best cornerback.. that seems crazy to me because that would mean on average he would be better than half of the #1 Cornerbacks for NFL Teams.. In 2017 he was ranked 39th.. which would make him around the 7th best second cornerback for NFL teams which would put him in the upper echelon of second CB's... If you average those two years together he would still average as a #1 cornerback for many teams..

Am I missing something here?

Isn't a nickel a Corner? When he was ranked, was he ranked the 16th best Nickel by itself or for all Cornerbacks?... again if there are 96 active corners/nickels that get a lot of playing time and you get the 16th or even 39th one.. as long as he isn't your #1 isn't that an upgrade for almost all teams? Can you even expect those kind of rankings from a second round pick odds wise let alone a 6th round? Is he getting paid close to the 16th or 39th best corner in the game? The average 16th best Cornerback is paid 10 million a year, the average 39th player around 5 million a year.. Now I know he might not be thrown at like the 1# corner but it still seems like a good deal to me.

IIRC Gaines was offered 2.5 mil and left. Went to Cleveland and signed for 3.5 mil. Now we are trading a pick to acquire a guy who makes even more money and Gaines is taking his place. We also help out the Browns with cap space.

It's all about supply, demand and timing. One trade can change how the dominos fall within the changed context of a trade/FA environment (Woulda coulda shoulda)

The rankings, I've seen make a distinction between playing inside or outside. He was quite good inside, less so out.

Yep and according to this article, after restructuring his contract:

Instead of making $4.25 million in salary this year, he will make $3.5 million. The $750,000 difference will be pushed into 2019, when Taylor is due to make $4 million.

What QB did BA guru? Certainly wasn't Palmer, his skill set was already there he just needed talent around him so that leaves Stanton, Logan Thomas, Ryan Lindley, and Blaine Gabbert. Am I missing something here?

Palmer was an average QB for several years until he hooked up with BA and then he had a couple of career years. BA was Andrew Lucks QB coach when he was a rookie and Rothlisberger's QB/OC when he was a rookie and beyond. He was also Tim Couches QB coach when he was a rookie and he went to the pro bowl that year and won 10 games IIRC.

Pick any QB Guru and they will have coached dudes that have resumes similar to Gabbert and Lindley etc.

I think Cardiac is thinking about his fourth season in the league where he led the team to a 9-7 record and a playoff appearance. No Pro Bowl appearances though. He was, however, Rookie of the month in October of 99.

Checked out the kid's scouting reports from his draft and then I watched a lot of the games he played for the Dolphins and Browns. I am going to go on record to say he takes the starting position opposite of Peterson (not really much of observation there) and will do a great job... playing for the Dolphins and Browns of late is not a great way to get your name noticed and he finally will have coaching which will make him better than sufficient, Wilks knows what he is doing on this one

This really looks like a classic Keim buy low maneuver. I remember Miami hyping him up a bit, and then he couldn't live up to it.

A couple years on the Browns with one total win doesn't look great on the ol resume.
