While we're waiting for something to happen, here's the Cards draft classes for the last 10 years. Which one was the worst? I think 2002 was pretty bad. 2000 wasn't bad when you consider many of those players are still playing for OTHER teams.

as much as people say 2004 was a great draft...2003 doesn't look that bad. out of that list maybe 4 starters in 2005 and 1 maybe 2 backups playing significant roles!

2002 was :barf: , However none of the drafts except last year look that great. I was going to say 1995, but we got Rob Morre for our first round pick so that was somewhat good.

I was looking at the list and wondering if maybe somebody was paying the Cards to screw up their drafts. There was just no eye for talented players who could make it to the NFL.

I agree 2003 looks good. With the exception of Calvin Pace who was selected too high, they drafted some guys with promise.

The last two drafts are the only ones worth mentioning. That probably means we have lots to look forward to. It is hard to believe how badly we have drafted over the last 10 years. A team would have to work hard to draft any worse.

Geez our drafts look horrible (except really for our last two ones) Boldin made the previous draft decent....and our last draft looks good.

It's funny how people hate to give up draft picks to get players but when you look at most drafts, most players don't pan out...

There, I edited down to the picks that were either A) good choices at the time B) guys who have panned out well for us or other teams, or C) guys who produced here for a time (Plummer, Boston, Mark Smith, etc.).

There's a lot of holes in there. Gheeezus did we have some bad drafts.

While I'm not too thrilled with the terrible trade we made in the draft of 2003, it's definitely true that McGinnis and Graves did well drafting rounds 2-6... those rounds worked out really friggin' nice for us that year. Here's hoping we continue to build w/ Green's drafting.

I'm pretty sure Dishman was drafted. Here's a review from 1997. You have to love how the experts rated the draft. Picking Ty Howard was an A+!!! What a freaking steal!!

Picking Dishman was a D-.

HOW THEY DID

1.With pick # 9 (CB-Tommy Knight,Iowa) the Cardinals might have reached a little here. CB was their biggest need, but I feel Knight was highly overrated. He’s 5’11" 195lbs. and runs a 4.43/40. His cover skills are sound, he doesn’t take many chances and has good recovery speed. He played 5 years at Iowa, getting an extra year of eligability due to a knee injury in ‘94. His knee appears to be totally recovered, so that shouldn’t be a concern. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good pick and I think Knight will be an immediate starter, but don’t be suprised if he moves to Safety. I thought Michael Booker or Chris Canty would have been a better pick. .
GRADE.....B+

2. At # 42 the Cardinals couldn’t resist the temptation of taking fan favorite, QB-Jake Plummer,Arizona State. If Plummer was 6’4" instead of 6’1" he would’ve been a top ten selection, no doubt. As far as leadership skills and on the field awareness he’s one of the best QB prospects in years. I thought the Cards would go for an offensive lineman with this pick, but they probably did the right thing. Jake Plummer is a winner, and if he doesn’t win the starting job in training camp, I’ll be suprised.
GRADE.....B+

3. The Cardinals made a trade here. They went from # 71 down to # 84 and received pick # 188 from the Eagles. With pick # 84 the Cards picked CB-Ty Howard, Ohio State. ABSOLUTE STEAL!! If you couldn’t tell already, I really liked this pick. I had Howard rated one spot ahead of # 8 Knight. The only reason Howard slipped this far was because he’s a little small (5’9" 185). He makes up for his lack of heigth with a 39" vertical. He’s very fast (4.36/40) and has better cover skills than Knight. I’m convinced he’s a better CB than Knight, that’s why I think Knight will end up at Safety.
GRADE.....A+

4. With pick # 106 the Cardinals finally tried to improve the offensive line by picking Nebraska Guard Chris Dishman. He’s got good size (6’2" 325lbs.), but isn’t very quick (5.40/40). In college Dishman was mostly a backup until his final year. He did have a good year in ‘96, and if he continues to improve, could evenually become a starter. The Cards needed a powerful run-blocking guard, and I don’t think Dishman is the right man. OT/G-Jerome Daniels, Northeastern was still available, and was a much better prospect. I think the Cards will regret not picking him. Dishman would have been available at # 139, maybe even # 175.
GRADE.....D+

5. They really lost me here. With pick # 139, the Cardinals picked WR-Chad Carpenter, Washington State. I’ll admit it, I’d never heard of this guy. I did some research and here’s what I found. He’s got good size (6’1" 200lbs.) with average speed (4.59/40). Ring a bell?? Don’t the Cardinals already have two guys (Rob Moore and Frank Sanders) that fit that mold. The Cardinals needed a speed receiver, not another big receiver. Carpenter doesn’t really fill a need. There were alot of speed receivers out there, who had better ‘96 numbers than Carpenter. For example: Micheal Adams,Texas/ Brian Manning,Stanford/ and Antuan Wyatt, Betune-Cookman.
GRADE.....D-

6. At pick # 175 the Cardinals selected FB-Rod Brown, North Carolina State. Brown is very strong and is the best blocking FB in the draft. He’s an average runner and has suprisingly good hands. I had Jerald Sowell, Tulane ranked as the # 1 fullback in the draft, and he was still available, but Brown may fit in with the Cardinals better than Sowell would have. This could be a good indication that Larry Centers will be getting alot more carries this year.
GRADE.....B-

6. With pick # 188, obtained from Philadelphia, the Cardinals picked LB-Tony McCombs,Eastern Kentucky. Looks like another steal here. McCombs has good size (6’2" 240lbs.) and great speed (4.55/40). Like Ronnie McKinnon, from last year, McCombs will probably take some time to develop, but I see him as a valuable special teams player this year, and look for him to start in ‘98.
GRADE.....B+

7. With their final pick ,# 212, The Cardianls selected DE-Mark Smith, Auburn. Smith is 6’3" 295lbs, he’s got average speed (4.95/40), and has exceptional athletic ability. The problem?? He’s got a questionable knee. After having knee surgery early in ‘96, Smith had a good season, but he never seemed to be at full strength. If his knee is healthy he should serve as a valuable backup along the defensive front. Good pick at this point, but I thought DT’s-Myron Elzy, Central State (Ohio) and Jason Ferguson, Georgia had alot better upside than Smith, and one of them should have been the pick here.
GRADE.....C-

SUMMARY

Positives: I really liked what the Cardinals did in the secondary. They needed alot of help, and got it. Picking a QB for the future was also a good move. And the addition of a blocking fullback was also smart. Depth at linebacker was also addressed, and i feel they got a prospect here.

Negatives: I was disappointed the Cardinals didn’t try harder to improve their offensive line. I also thought they failed to do any upgrading at wide receiver.

Check out some of the players we could have had we have drafted smarter. I tracked backed to 1997.
1997- We took Tom Knight. We could have had Tony Gonzalez.
1998- We took Andre Wadsworth. We could have had Charles Woodson.
1999- We took David Boston and L.J. Shelton. We could have had Chris McAlister and still should have taken Shelton.
2000- We took Thomas Jones. We could have had either Brian Urlacher or SHAUN ALEXANDER!!
2001- We took Leonard Davis. I would have taken him so that pick was good.
2002- We took Wendell Bryant. We could have had Ed Reed.
2003- We took Bryant Johnson and Calvin Pace. We had the sixth pick and could have taken hometown hero Terrell Suggs. Even ESPN analysts said live "what were they thinking?". And that's a trade I will never forgive them for.
2004- We took Larry Fitzgerald and I agreed with the pick because we weren't the only ones who passed on Roethlisberger.

Imagine how our team would be doing if we had that roster.

I added my two cents to your Leonard Davis comment. I do this all the time with my 20/20 hind sight. It does me no good, but I like to play the "What if?" game just to torture myself. BTW, I like the fact that Denny's picks are from major universities.

Those are some pretty dreadful drafts. Part of the reason the Cardinals have had only 1 playoff season in the last 30 years in a non strike year

3a. Robert Awalt TE SD State (also a good pick)

Awalt was a good pick indeed Jeff. This got me to thinking about the other TE we drafted either the year before this or the year after from Wyoming I think. Dang his name escapes me!!! Bugel cut him and he went on and had several good years for the Cowgirls!!!! What was his name? Didn't we draft him too?

Yeah, we had Novacek and Awalt at TE and they both had around 50 catches apeice with Lomax throwing to them. That offense with R Green,Tilley,E Ferral and L Sharpe (before the drugs) could really move the ball. Who was the other RB Ottis or Stump?

That phantom ruffing penalty on E.J. Junior, a converted 3 and 18 to Art Monk(?) and the missed 50yr field goal wakes me up cussing in the middle of the night once a month.

I knew you would remember his name Shuesters!!!! Jay Novacek of course!!! I am pretty sure we drafted him too!!!
Oh man I feel you on that Redskins game too Shuest!!!! OOOOOOOHHHHHH how that missed 50 yrd field goal hurt!!!! He makes it and we are in the playoffs. Thought we outplayed the 'Skins all day that day!!!! We still had Ottis because he was with the Cards until the coach from the Cowboys that went on to 'Bama traded him which was after this game with the 'Skins. This team may have been one of the best ones that never made it to the playoffs. Hanifan was HC.

When you look at the ineptitude of these drafts, is there any surprise why the Cardinals record since they've moved to AZ has been worse than putrid. I'd have to say that their best drafts were 2001, 2003, 2004. Everything else SUCKS.
