Without stating the obvious, here it goes.
The Good
Nothing-Nothing positive came out of this. The defense came out flat to start but did step up later and got some key turnovers but in the end, it was just too much to overcome.
The Bad
John Carlson-Dropped a key first down early and late when we really needed a first down, didn't know where the sticks were and as usual, he ends up a yard shy. I'd like to see more of Fells than Carlson going forward.
Offensive Line-More specifically, Massie and Fanaika. Fanaika has got to go. Massie, at least has an upside but Faniaka has none. He's drifted into Levi Brown territory when it comes to being a human turnstile. But all in all the line could get zero push.
Ryan Lindley-I really can't give him an ugly here only because it's not like we can expect any more from him. He did his best which just isn't good enough. He really doesn't belong on an NFL field.
One And Done-Don't know what would be worse. This result or going 9-1 and missing the playoffs. I'll take making the playoffs all day. Sadly, the injuries just caught up to us.
The Ugly
Ted Ginn Jr.-This guy has been a train wreck all season. With the exception a few returns, he's been a disaster and certainly not worth the $3 or so million he's due next season. But today he was especially pathetic. Why he feels it necessary to return a kick 9 yards deep is beyond me and for him to go all Jameis Winston and give Carolina the ball on the 3 yard line was just mindboggling. If he is still on this team next year there's something wrong.
Drew Butler-Awful. 9 punts for an average of 34.8. Now, his counter part's average wasn't any better but the difference is that his 4 punts were from our side of the field. Butler's problem is that all of his punts came from our 30 or worse. He singlehandedly gave then 20 of their 27 points. Ginn and the officials gave them the other 7.
78 Total Offensive Yards-No need to go on here. Self explanatory.
The Officiating-I know I'm beating a dead horse here and I know blaming the officials for a loss where your offense generated 78 yards but the officiating was horrendous. There was a play where Minter(I think I saw it was #51) was brought to the ground by Carolina's right tackle and nearly had his jersey stripped off then to add insult to injury, the lineman kept him down, hands full of jersey, right in front of the official with no flag. Then there was the no call on 3rd and long deep when Floyd's arm was blatantly held with no call. These were just 2 on a day of horrible calls, most of which went against us in crucial times.
That's it. Wish we could have given a better effort offensively because the defense did all they could but sadly, Lindley was the last person who should have been on that field. I'm convinced that had Palmer never gone down, we would have been sitting home watching these games this weekend awaiting our next opponent but, alas, a home Super Bowl was not meant to be. The football gods saw that this would not happen.
