The more Dennis Green talked about missing wide receiver Anquan Boldin, the more angry he got. The Cardinals coach opened a three-day mandatory minicamp Friday with his team, but the news was about one of the couple of guys who wasn’t there. Boldin, as expected, didn’t show up because he wants a new contract.

So Green was peppered with questions about Boldin’s absence, a subject frustrating Green enough that at one point, he tried to cut short his press conference.

“You know what, how much (difference) did one player make (the past couple years)?” Green said. “Everybody wants their best players, absolutely. But you have to go play. I don’t think we have one guy on the team that’s thinking, ‘Oh my, we’re not going to be any good because we don’t have one player.’ That’s not football, man.”

Tackle L.J. Shelton was the only other missing player, but Shelton — whom the Cards are trying to trade and who the team doesn’t want to get injured in offseason work — had permission from Green to stay home. Shelton did show up to take his physical Thursday.

Boldin hadn’t shown up to any other offseason work, and agent Drew Rosenhaus has directed other clients to skip such work to force a team to deal. Fellow Rosenhaus client Terrell Owens of Philadelphia is also skipping minicamp this weekend.

Boldin’s original deal had a signing bonus of $1.2 million, and pays him salaries of $380,000 and $460,000 the next two seasons.

The situation wasn’t helped when the Cards gave fellow receiver Larry Fitzgerald a contract that will pay him around $16 million by the time training camp starts in August.

Another Rosenhaus client, Cleveland running back Reuben Droughns, said earlier this week he will hold out if he doesn’t get a new contract. Like Boldin, Droughns has two years left on his contract.

Previously, Rosenhaus had said he would not be commenting on the situation. Vice president of football operations Rod Graves said the same thing.

“I’m just going to talk about the guys that are here,” Graves said.

That left Green to talk about the situation, and it was clearly not his favorite topic.

“I just know that I have one focus: The last two years the Arizona Cardinals have been 10-22 (in wins and losses),” Green said. “It’s my goal the next two years to make the Arizona Cardinals 22-10.

“I just know what winning teams do and how they think. Everybody is going to have holdouts, that’s part of the game. Everyone is going to have disputes.

That’s part of the game too. When it’s all said and done... the ones that are going to win this year are the ones who are going to have everyone there working.”

The Cardinals are expected to fine Boldin, but the maximum fine under the collective bargaining agreement is only $1,000 a day.

That’s why irritating a coach like Green would seem like the biggest punishment for not showing, although asked if he gave a clean slate to holdouts like Boldin, Green said “I have a clean slate every day.”

Boldin’s teammates have been supportive of his effort to improve his contract.

“You hate to have guys not at minicamp because you want to build that continuity, but you understand,” quarterback Kurt Warner said. “You hope and pray it gets done sooner rather than later so that when it really comes time to buckle down and get ready for the season you have all the pieces together.”

Green emphasized he wasn’t going to linger on the Boldin issue and he didn’t expect his players to either.

“Winners don’t whine about anything,” Green said. “About anything or anyone. Winners lace it up and start playing. That’s the way I am going to be.

“Like I said before, I am a lot less patient this year than I was last year, I’ve got a lot more on my mind about what I am going to do with this football team. I don’t really care who buys into it or not. I think enough players will buy into it. I think we had enough changes and I think we are going to win.”

Shouldn't the goal be 32-0 ? :D

Last year that last bit would have bugged me but this year it doesn't. I think Green has very clearly spelled out what he expects, QUan is perfectly aware that by holding out, he takes some risk with respect to getting on Green's badside.

I suspect if the contract gets done and Quan is at regular camp, Green won't hold a grudge for very long, but if it drags on, Green has demonstrated repeatedly in his career he'll do it his way.

I just hope it doesn't get ugly, Rosenhaus and Quan couldn't have picked a worse situation to push, Green, and Bidwill Sr have a history of not caving.

This is a tough situation because Denny wants to instill a certain attitude in the players...by holding out Quan is ignoring Denny's goals...on the other hand, Quan should have a new contract in hand...its rough man, its rough.

I heard mention that Rosenhaus could have up to 10 of his clients hold out. A list that includes Boldin, TO, Javon Walker and Sean Taylor. Taylor reall baffles me, he wants to renegotiate after 1 season? He was good but was he so good that first round pick money wasn't good enough???

He must be thinking 10-6 this year (as I have predicted) and 12-4 next year (which I also expect)...... :raccoon:

What another player of equal talent, that wants the same money. Just hook up Boldin, what are they at now, where is Boldin at. Offer the middle amount, say take it or leave it. And that it loses 1% of the value everyday you don't take it. If he refuses go on with out him, let him sit out for two years, maybe he'll come around after he relizes he still has 2 years on his contract. They should play hard ball with him, iof thats what he wants.

Taylor is getting really bad advice. Taylor has changed agents repeatedly, I think he's on #4 and I think Rosenhaus is in his 2nd stint as his agent. Taylor's belief is that Winslow's deal was better than his and that his agent screwed up for that to be the case. Apparently his agent accused DR of tampering and planting the thought in his head that his deal was a bad deal.

He's clearly making a mistake he's a great young player who's going to piss a lot of his teammates off by holding out so early in his career just because K2 got a comparable or maybe slightly better deal.

Seeing how the Postons screwed up so badly on the Winslow bonus, Taylor's contract must really suck. :D

Does anybody have a problem with this?

Imagine if one of your co-workers you out-performed was making 30x as much money as you are! If I was Boldin I would be upset as well!

The hell with all of them. Green's right. Forget about him, we've got 2 first round picks at WR, and we'll get by with them. No one's replaceable, especially a player on a 6-10 ballclub, and I don't care how much talent he has. I have a Boldin jersey hanging in my closet, and I've bought others for friends; I'm a big Boldin fan, but if he ain't here, he ain't a Cardinal, and if he ain't a Cardinal, I don't care about him.

Holdouts are rediculously stupid, the club always holds the power and the club always wins. "I ain't learned nothin' 'bout nothin'." Remember that phrase?

Yes, but if your employer was trying to work something out with you, would you refuse to go to work in the mean time? Anquan is getting some bad advice and if this continues, he'll be playing somewhere else this year.

He needs to show he wants to win. He'll do that by attending all of the camps and putting faith in the Cards telling him they will rework his contract and continue negotiating. If an agreement isn't made prior to the first snap of regular season, then he can hold out. Right now it's all about conditioning, timing and developing team comaraderie. Agents suck!

Very Good point 40. I couldn't agree more. This whole situation reminders me of something that I heard about Yankees outfielder Matsui. When asked if he was going to ask for his contract to be restructured he replied,(paraphrased) No, I have a Contract. When that contract is up then I will negotiate a new contract.

IMHO a few agents, if left go, will ruin Football for the fans. So the question is, if agents are there to protect the players, who will be there to protect the game and the fans? :soapbox:

Yeah they suck and Drew figured out, hey if I hold the guy out of camp completely and he's a stud the team will let him play when the real bullets fly and it'll crush the very thing you just mentiond and inflict maximum damage on the team with very little financial damage to the client.

He is the father of all lies...... he's...... he's.....

Or imagine if you hired a contractor to build a house for you. Half-way through construction he said "I found out the guy building a house down the street paid his contractor more than you're paying me. I'm not going to spend another day working on your house until you triple my pay."

There's no clear cut answer on this one. Hopefully the negotions go fast and both sides are willing to compromise to reach an agreement.

A-holes like this will get theirs. Unfortunately, it may cost us Boldin this year. Rhouse will screw his greed-ass self and get hosed. It may take 3 stellar deals to make his career, but it will only take one stinker to flush it all down the hole.

I know TO, Walker, and Boldin all held out today. This is a very tough situation. Boldin has always had a great attitude, and plays his heart out, but Green is the man around here!

I for one lose respect for any player that holds out when they have 2 years left. I don't care if the Cards promised him the moon, who even knows what was said? Blah blah blah...I want this...waaa waaa waaa, they promised that. Play your stupid contract that YOU signed, give him a new contract in the middle of the year when he shows he's back playing like he was as a rookie. Until then, I'm sick and tired of agents BUT I'm just as sick of players, they choose to take the advice of the agent.

Q will lose respect and fans if he continues in IMO. I think we, the fans, want a "team" more than players, they're all about themselves.

Great..Now I'm pissed...:hulk:

Why does Boldin even have an agent. Seriously, there are some athletes out there who don't have agents. One that comes to mind is St. Louis Cardinal pitcher Matt Morris. Boldin seems like an intelligent guy. I think he'd be smart to negotiate his own contract. I can't remember the terms or how official it was, but the deal that was talked about on this board recently seemed more than fair for Q. If he fired Rosenhaus and represented himself, not only would he save the commission but he'd send a message to that greedy bastard of an agent.

It is career suicide to sit out forever. Truth is he gets fined a grand per day during minicamps and 5K during training camp...then he'll start missing game checks. The only thing that happens is feelings are hurt. The players always get onto the field, and if they sit out long enough the only one hurt is the team, not the player. He will play, contract or not because his income disappears if he doesn't. honestly, who has this sort of behavior really worked out for? Quan gets Minicamp from me. Training camp starts to irk me, games are inexcusable.
