Cards FA bargaining power

Something we've grown accustomed to is free agents using to drive up their asking price before signing with other teams. This happened last year with 2 marque free agents, Roosevelt Colvn and Vonnie Holliday. Let's look at how that turned out.

Vonnie Holliday: Not an elite player but was the best option available at DE last year. So how did he earn that big paycheck after snubbing us? A whopping 29 tackles and 5.5 sacks as a 16 game starter. 3 of those sacks came in the first game so he had 2.5 sacks in the next 15 games. That's 2.5 sacks more than Dennis Johnson who wasn't even a starter till later in the year. Way to go Vonnie.

Colvin: He came, he saw, he signed elsewhere and broke his leg.

If you count Kordell who came and looked around before stinking it up in Chicago it wasn't a good year for guys who said no to us.

Graves has the perfect sales pitch for this years free agents. Don't incure the karmic wrath of the Cards. Sign with Arizona or risk:

A) sucking like Holliday
B) breaking your leg
C) really really sucking like Kordell

So Jevon, you have a history of leg injuries, eh? You might want to think twice about not signing here.

Of course the flip side to that is Jeff Blake, came, he signed, and got cut after one year.

Or Darling: He came, he signed, and was a backup all year.

Considering their talent levels I wouldn't consider either one of them a dissapointment. In my above post I was referring mainly to players who are supposed to be good.

I know and I thought it was funny.

I was just playing devils advocate.

I will say that Blake had his worst season as a Pro last year. Is he great? No, but I expected much more out of him.

I expected him to lose his job to Josh sooner than he did. Of course I should have rememberd that with Mac, nobody loses their starting job ever, for any reason.

You really thought that prior to the season?

I mean considering Blakes career numbers and coming off a nice season in Baltimore you didint think he would have played better than he did?

I know people bag on Blake now, but before the season I was really excited to see what he could do.

I never expected Blake to be anything more than a temporary care taker. The ONLY reason I liked the Blake signing was that it meant we weren't getting Kordell.

I am not talking about long-term solution here. I agree he was a 2 year replacement guy.

But looking at his career numbers, you werent disapoointed int he way he played?

I mean he should have had much better numbers than he had, and at times , he was down right awful.

I had some expectations about Blake that obviously didnt hold water...

On the other hand I have zero expectations from a 3rd round pick, from a Division II school, who has only seen mop up duty....hopefully he will suprise me.
