Cards Hold Workout with Three Players

The Arizona Cardinals worked out quarterback Ricky Ray, defensive back Eric Joyce, and defensive back Todd Howard on Monday, February 09.

Ray spent the last two years playing for the Canadian Football League’s Edmonton Eskimos. Prior to his stint with the CFL, Ray played seven games for the Fresno Frenzy of Arena Football2.

In his two seasons at Sacramento State, Ray completed .619 percent of his passes to become the school’s completion percentage leader, and also ranks third in touchdowns with 33 and fourth in yards (4,622) and completions (347).

Joyce, originally signed by the Cards in 2002 as an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee State, spent training camp and the preseason with Arizona before his release at the 53-man cut. Joyce was signed by the Chicago Bears in November 2002 to their practice squad and also spent training camp and the preseason of 2003 with Chicago. Recently, Joyce has been in training camp with the Georgia Force, an arena football team.

Howard, originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan by the St. Louis Rams in 2002, played in the preseason and was re-signed to the Rams practice squad for the final nine weeks of the 2002 campaign. He was allocated by the Rams to the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europe in the spring of 2003 and spent training camp and preseason with the Rams before his release in late August. Howard was on the Rams practice squad for a week in October in 2003 and during the playoffs in January of 2004.

He's being looked at by several NFL teams. There was a thread on the Denver board last week on him, he was cut by SF a few years ago after being precidely what you said, camp fodder. Did quite well in Canada though.

He played well up in Canada for the Edmonton Eskimoes who won The Grey Cup this past year (remember Warren Moon.....this was his team for six years before he came to the NFL).

Or maybe 3rd string backup that has had some experience beyond the college level? The Canadian game, like Arena football, tends to be a "fast" game, especially for QB's. So I don't think you could automatically write him off either.

Either way....I like the move. No one still really has any real clue of what the Cards are likely to do in the draft.

...the plot thickens....I love it.

I would love for Ricky Ray to sign here.

Good point.

Right now, we are still just in the "workout" mode.

If the Cards are going to go for a vet-type backup, I would prefer they go for a guy with actual NFL starting experience. For all intents, Ray would barely be that much better off than McCown. I have to believe the NFL game is leaps faster than the CFL game.

I am not saying the Cards should simply discount him altogether (in fact, I like the idea they have opened the horizons of their player searches to the CFL)...just that if they are going the route of a vet player, I want NFL quality vet.

What about that guy that played for Chicago in the Bears' playoff run? He's a Buc now, but I think he spent 2003 on IR for a shoulder thing. You remember him? Did 'roids or something?

Jim Miller. Yeah he got busted for roids but by looking at him he clearly isn't doing roids. LOL. There was no mistaking he took the substance by complete mistake but there are no exceptions to that rule.

He is a very smart player but he was injured (shoulder and he was noodle-armed to begin with) and he may have retired.

Miller.

He had a couple of Monster games for the bears (I think he still holds a couple of single-game records--450-some yards passing rings a bell for some reason), but other than that he's nothing better than a career backup. Plus, he's always hurt.

I'd be okay with having him be the guy backing up mCown, though. Seemed like the Bears always rallied around him--he was a good leader and a good guy.

Does the name Jeff Garcia mean anything to you.......he came directly from The Calgary Stampeders into the SF 49'ers starting QB position......their game is actually much faster than ours.

Oh and Doug Flutie seemed to shine with Buffalo from the Canadian league as well. Mobile QB's shine in Canada......which is why Akili Smith should ressurect his career up there.

The issue isn't if Ray is good but rather, who do you want backing up McCown? If you want a guy with essentially no NFL experience backing him up, than Ray may be your guy. If you want a guy backing him up who has started and played in the NFL, than Ray is not the way to go.

I have stated, I would like to see someone who has NFL starting experience back him up since, like Russ, I happen to believe at least in the short term, McCown's playing style may lead him to miss a start here and there.

I saw Ricky Ray play at least a dozen times over the past two years, including - two live games against our Ottawa Renegades.

He's not particularly mobile, but slides well in the pocket... and has a great touch on his throws. As you know, the field up here is wider and longer and he showed that he can make all the throws.

If we're looking for NFL experience in a back-up, he's not it... but, I'd venture to say - that our current no. 3 would have one hell of time beating this guy out.

Does this mean that we might sent Preston Parsons to NFL Europe? I for one would like to see him go over and get some playing time. Does anyone know when the players are declared to go over?

I guess they finally got tired of having two Rough Riders in the CFL. (Saskatchewan is the other one)

The Ottawa Rough Riders, as opposed to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, went belly-up some years ago. The name belonged to a Chicago businessman and the owners of the new expansion franchise refused to buy it. Result: The Ottawa Renegades

Well, yeah! The Cardinals have NO current #3. There are only two QB's currently on the team - McCown and Parsons.
