The Arizona Cardinals, the National Football Foundation, Coke, and ALLTEL hosted the “Football Skills and Education Camp” on Saturday, May 24 at the Cardinals Training Facility.
The camp offered students from 200 high schools across Arizona the opportunity to attend a full day of classroom and on-field football instruction from professionals. Included in the camp was a classroom discussion of collegiate letter-of-intent procedures, financial aid information and proper study habits.
Cardinals players Damien Anderson (running back), Anthony Clement (offensive tackle), Russell Davis (defensive lineman), Tim Duncan (kicker), Jason McAddley (wide receiver), Josh McCown (quarterback), and Coby Rhinehart (cornerback) joined assistant offensive line/offensive quality control coach Mike Devlin as position coaches for the day.
Devlin and Clement had their group of tight ends and offensive linemen working at blocking drills until reaching an acceptable level of perfection.
"Oh yeah,"confirmed Clement. "We were working them pretty hard out there."
"One goes, the whole group goes," coached Devlin as he made the whole group repeat a drill when one player made a mistake.
"It doesn't matter what level you are playing at," explained Devlin. "The offensive line works as a unit and the sooner they understand that, the better players they will become."
Meanwhile Anderson and McCown explained the importance of finesse and putting a nice touch on the ball.
"I have pretty good hands, but I am not a receiver," said Anderson to the group. "As quarterbacks, you are not trying to kill us out here. This is a 5-yard route. Just put a soft touch on it and give us a chance to make the play."
The camp was the first event the Cardinals have targeted specifically for high school students, but Community Relations Director Luis Zendejas is hoping the camp becomes an annual event and will help prepare high school athletes for the collegiate level.
