I’m okay with the Cards talking to as many HC prospects as possible. On the surface it would seem you want to be sure you’ve explored all your options. That said being decisive is critical in this process and time may not be on the Cardinal’s side. Two other teams have already picked their man with at least one of those guys on the Cards’ target list. The Cards have now added the additional hurdle of telling applicants if chosen for the next round they will be expected to visit the Cards’ facilities if they wish to be offered the position. On the surface that seems okay but you have to wonder how many other key Cardinal options may be sucked up before the Cards actually offer the position. The Cards are certainly proceeding as if they had the premier opening. I think they do have a good slot, but since most of the candidates have waited a long time for this opportunity I can’t picture many of them not accepting a position and instead waiting for the Cards to decide. My experience tells me that when I’ve been in a similar position, I’ve known my top candidate when I’ve seen them. We can only hope that when the Cards figure out their man he still wants them. I’m not sure this is really a buyer’s market

From my experience, if you were a hiring decision maker and didn't offer to show me around your facilities, I'd tell you to "F" off. It's important to know where you are going to be working.

Besides, who is to say the Cards already don't know who they want? Most of the coaches they interviewed are still in the playoffs and cannot come to any kind of agreement, verbal or otherwise, until they are either eliminated or win the super bowl.

I have a pretty firm feeling it's Shurmur or Bettcher at the end of the day. With it sounding like there's only 3 jobs left (assuming the Patricia news is true), I think we have the best remaining opening left. I think all three teams will hold their cards close to the vest until most of the teams have been eliminated. I'm not particularly concerned that we won't get our guy.

More concerned about the coordinators. Shurmur is fine, but we need a firecracker OC and a competent ST.

and a top defensive coordinator...just because our guys were decent does not mean we shouldnt stay vigilant.
thats what happened to our offense when Buddy took over.

My guess on how it plays out:

"Done Deals"
OAK: Gruden, who we would not target anyway.
CHI: Nagy, not mentioned as a front-runner for AZ.

"To Be Determined"
NYG: I bet they don't let Wilks leave town and AZ misses out on the first candidate they truly did consider.
DET: Patricia, due to relationship with GM. Cards would be lucky to avoid him, IMO.
IND: If McDaniels wants total control, this is his best chance to get it. Although with a meddling owner, that will likely be lip service to get him there. This may be the only legitimate competition for Shurmur's services if McDaniels decides to stay in New England another year.

AZ: Shurmur (kind of like BA: A top choice that will still be available after most teams have hired their new HC's.)

BA was the last head coach hired when he got the Cardinals job. It's more important to get the best guy instead of rushing around in fear. Now, if the guy you REALLY want is getting another offer, then you have to be prepared to make a move.

That does sound like a perfect match made in hell. A headcase owner with a headcase coach. It couldn't go any other way. Poor Andrew.

There are four spots open, and the top 3 for me would be:

1. Pat Shurmur
2. Steve Wilks
3. John DeFillipio

Feeling pretty good about things, since I think Patricia will be hired by the Lions. Pretty sure Steve Wilks gets hired by the Giants given the current GM there.

Like what you did with the thread title Harry.

BTW, if Bettcher (sp?) was hired does that mean that much of the Arians' staff would be retained? Anyone happy with that besides the Bidwills. No buyouts or payoffs.

I have no problem with the way they are handling the search. You can't hire those that are still in the playoffs. The perspective candidates need to come here and see what we have to offer and if there is a good match. The meetings last week were really just the start. I believe they will get their guy.

How many NFL Head Coaches have you hired? If visiting the facility is a deterrent than the candidate can keep walking. It's a minor inconvenience, if that, and ensures that candidate wants to be in AZ. This is a two way street and there are more similarly qualified candidates than openings. I trust Keim and Bidwill. They will get it done.

Why do we as fans act like these aren't real people taking the job? Would you take a job without asking about the work environment? Especially if the job meant you were spending 6 days a week there at certain times during the year?

Hell, would you hire a candidate without bringing them in to meet the team at large and ensure there's some chemistry there? These are absolute minimum things for me when hiring an employee unless I'm desperate and they're the perfect person.

It is a good year to be looking for a coach.

Absolutely, especially for an offensive minded HC. Looks like Patricia will be a Lion, Wilks a Giant. Both Shurmur and DeFilippo would be great choices to get our offense going with a new young QB. This leaves us in competition with the Colts, whose roster is really bad in all aspects and uncertainty surrounding Luck. I'd expect the Colts to hire a new HC before us, so we'd have a broad field of potential candidates to pick from, some of whom may not even been mentioned yet. Could be a really interesting week for us.

Who would want to work for Colts owner Jim Irsay.

I would like to see Jim Harbaugh visit the Tempe facility, that said I don’t know, Michael Bidwill waited for the coach of the year last time, wish I knew what lil Billy Bidwill was looking for in a head coach, this his 9th decade! I don’t trust Keim as much as I once did.
1. Smel wants Jim Harbaugh
2. Keim wants DeFilippo
3. Michael wants Schumer
4. Billy wants Tom Cable

How’s that for a poop in the dark.

How do you know they didn't? Pure speculation on your part.

Actually they did. There was a video on it on the cards site before BA retired. It was either Bidwill or Keim that said they have a contingency plan in place for a lot of things. Head coach retiring was one since they knew he could retire at any moment. Said they had a list of possible replacements.

I think the Cardinals would have already made their choice for head coach unless the coach they want is involved with a playoff team.

Until the Cardinals hire a head coach, everything is opinion.

Yeah. The Cards like to have someone come in and, IIRC, they usually have candidates do a press conference to feel out how they are in front of the podium.

It's fine.
