Cardinals free-agent cornerback Renaldo Hill stopped by the team’s facility Monday, but it was just to pick up a check, not to sign a contract.
For now, Hill waits to see if he’ll have reason to return.

The Cardinals, who have just one experienced cornerback under contract, are "definitely in the picture," Hill said, but other than that, he doesn’t know where he will sign.

"I’m just being patient," Hill said. "It seemed like whenever we were going to make a move someone else gets into the picture."

Hill admitted he may take a one-year contract and try free agency again next offseason, although teams now likely will wait until after the draft to sign any more players.

David Macklin is the lone Cards corner from 2004 currently with Arizona. Duane Starks was traded, while Hill and Robert Tate are free agents. The Cardinals are expected to draft at least one cornerback.

RAYNOCH SHOWS

Linebacker Raynoch Thompson, who has had an up-and-down relationship with the team, showed up for workouts and vowed to work hard for the team if they kept him around.

"It’s a case where if they don’t want me here, I don’t want to be here," Thompson said. "I don’t want to be nowhere I’m not wanted. Other than that, I want to be here. We have a good core of guys, we made some key offseason acquisitions, and it looks like we are heading in the right direction."

Thompson said his grievance against the team — the Cardinals withheld some of his signing bonus in 2004 after he was suspended for four games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy — will be heard in May.

WARNER READY

New quarterback Kurt Warner said he wasn’t sure when he will begin throwing to Anquan Boldin, Larry Fitzgerald and the rest of the receivers, but said he was ready "as soon as possible."

"So much of this offense is based on timing and anticipation," Warner said, "and that comes down to actually being on the field and doing those things and getting a feel for your receivers."

EXTRA POINTS

Defensive end Bertrand Berry, who played in the Pro Bowl and took part in NBA All-Star weekend and other events the past few months, knows he has had a busy offseason. But he isn’t complaining.

"A lot of it’s been self-inflicted," he quipped. . . .

Running back Marcel Shipp, who said he would be ready to play when on-field practices begin later this month, isn’t worried about talk the Cardinals will draft a running back.

"It’s the way of the world, and it’s been like that since I have been here," Shipp said. "I have to compete for the job every year, so it’s nothing new to me.". . .

Defensive lineman Kenny King said the plan is to try him both at left defensive end and under tackle as part of the rotation. King also has put on 22 pounds — from 270 to 292 — and looks more muscular.

I take it the Cardinals don't offer direct deposit. :D

You'd think that they would have at least that, but also they would have another way to get it to him???

The single most important sentence in the whole article. Do we maybe have the run stuffing DT we are looking for?

I'm really surprised about Raynoch showing up. I wonder what this will mean? Maybe he's trying to get out of DG's doghouse.

Ray, bryant, and AC all guys who are on the trading block have seemingly turned it around. Maybe we will keep them.

King is more of a penetrator than gap-control run-stuffer. At 292 lbs we have a terrific backup to Darnell Dockett at UT and, if we want to, someone who can anchor at LDE in place of Okeafor on running downs.

But 292 is still kind of light for a NT and it remains to be see whether or not King can anchor against the inside run. The hope has to be that a fire has been lit under Wendell Bryant and he either wins the starting job from Russell Davis or becomes a quality rotation-guy or backup. That remains to be seen.

But this thread is about Hill. If we sign him, I believe he gives us depth and veteran leadership from the nickel position but we still need someone with a little more speed at starting CB. I get the feeling that the Cards are leaning in that direction high in the draft and, in addition, would love to draft a second CB to play nickel. This may be what's delaying a final decision on Renaldo. (i.e. Cards could very well be taking a calculated and somewhat risky gamble by waiting til after the draft before they make a final decision on Hill).

I dont think it is nearly that calculated. I think it is as simple as Hill wants 2-2.5 per year deal and the Cards are only offering 1-1.5 per year.

Attack, not stuff

Did DG say he's looking for a run stuffer? DG's philosophy is to attack the run, not stuff it. Luis Castillo fits this philosophy - a three hundred pounder who's quick and can run (compared to other DTs).

Well if the reports out of "voluntary" are accurate, perhaps Wendal Bryant fits the bill......he's 305 lbs and is "attact" versus react in playing style. If he comes into this off season with an "attitude", we might have our answer.

I'm thinking that we pass on a DT in the draft and see what we've got with Dockett; King; Davis and Bryant........at least for one more year.

I got to watch Bryant up close the last two camps. For a 305 lb guy, he sure didn't look filled out. I'd have guessed him at 270 lbs. I just don't see him becomming a two-gap tackle. There just isn't enough lower body on him.

Come September, his uniform number might be on somebody else.

I asked the same question some months, ago.

I couldn't find any direct quote from Green or Pendergast saying that they were going from an "attack the run" to a "two gap" approach.

Some mention by Green about "getting stronger" against the run, but it's a stretch for anyone to say this specifically refers to a "two gap" approach.

It seemed that this two-gap speculation came largely from those in love with Fat Pat Williams.

Just to clarify for some of you, our D isnt a 1 gap or 2 gap approach it is a combo of both. You have your UT who plays the 1 gap and then you have your NT who plays the 2 gap. Dockett played a 1 gap style while they had Davis play a 2 gap style.

Green did say he wants to get bigger and stronger up the middle which is why we went after Hartwell and why it is easy to assume that we would also be looking for a bigger and stronger NT.

So how does King play at 292 pounds... like Bernard Wilson or Bertrand Berry? The fact that he weighs 292 means nothing. If more is better then the fat guy they buried in a piano box should have his bronze mug in the Hall of Fame.

King has had questions of his durability due to the fact that he is pretty light for a DT at 275lbs.

The fact that he has gotten bigger and stronger will mean he will be able to see him on the field for longer and bring more size to our DL.

This is all good news. If Ray got humbled, great. He's got the potential to be a great player, and if he plays hard this year, we'll have a much deeper core of LBs.

Hill would be smart to come back here. He's got a great chance to start on the Cardinals, on other teams this year it might not be so easy.

Kenny King needed to get bigger. That's a no-brainer, and I'm glad to see that he's been doing what he needs to do to be an NFL player: put on size.

I'm curious though, why hasn't Warner thrown to any of our big three yet? Are they not participating in this voluntary workout?

None of them showed. Are they doing more than hitting the gym? This isn't a minicamp type thing is it?

It is not a mini camp thing. Just a 14 week workout get into shape type thing. There is no structured type practices like a mini camp has but it doesnt stop players from getting together with their position caoches and breaking down film or working on technique out on the field. for example in one of the articles today it stated that Everett Lindsay the OL coach was on the field teaching some of the olinemen.
