Cards ball in the red zone they line up double tight (edwards and pope) single back (edge of course) with Q and fitz out wide. The ball is snapped the defense has to keep a close eye on the hand to edge becasue of his affinity to gain those tough goal line yards, but instead warner drops back and edge stay in the back field in pass protection. eric edwards stays in to block as pope comes off the other side of the line and heads to the corner of the endzone as the defender trying to cover him thinks to himself "holy crap how am I going to go up for a jump ball with this 6'8'' monster?!?!?" in the mean time fitz heads to the opposite corner of the endzone as his defender thinks the same thing about fitz' 40' vert and superglue hands. Q fights his way across a very open middle (due to pope and fitz in the corners) in the back of the endzone as the linebacker eyeing edge in the backfield thinks to himself "will he stay to block will he release for a pass or will warner hand him the ball on a draw???"

That would be better than last season when Q and fitz would just be out.

I pick the Line will False Start, then the following play the O Line blows a Block and Warner gets creamed and we settle for a FG. Not trying to be a jerk, but does anybody else seem to remember this O-line??? I mean this O-line was god awful, I mean amazingly god awful, especially in the red zone!!! I'm not sold on this offense until we see some sort of major improvement made.

no, they don't because the projected starting o-line from last year has never played a game together due to injuries, our oline was filled with names like wakefield, haayer and cantu last year. This year we will be fielding the best five out of davis, ross, latui, brown, brown, wells, steponavich and leckey we go 8 deep, no wakefields cantus or haayers even if we do have a few injuries.

Edwards releases his block and is wide open for the TD in the flat.

Let the Koolaid flow... Very potent offense on paper!

Weak link is still OL until they prove otherwise on the field.

Weak link of the line was the guard play. Hopefully it will be improved.

Are you sure you're not trying. let's just wait until the new season please before passing judgement. We've got new lineman via the draft and free agency. Plus we have a new line coach in Steve Loney.:D

Maybe you missed dozens of false start penalities by LD (league leading among tackles?). The home Rams game was lost for the large part by LD's stupid penality.

And the sucking plays of Ross where it seemed like he was playing on rollerskates or ice.

And the backups were... backups were... ummm... did we have backup tackles last season?

I saw all of that, but I felt like the play of the interior of the line was an absolute disaster.

That's ridiculous. First you have to assume that the Cards would have actually scored a TD had they been able to get off another play. Something they were unable to do for the majority of their snaps inside the 10 all last year.

Then you are ignoring the foul up in clock management that caused the rush to the los that led to LD moving early as well as all the other stupid plays the Cards made in that game.

Finally, other than that one FS against the Rams none of LD's penalties had an adverse affect on a Cardinal drive all year.

edit: Just so I'll feel better plays from the Home STL game:

12:34 in 2nd Q Cards drive to STL 11
1st-Shipp no gain
2nd-INC PASS
3rd-INC Pass
FG

Cards first and goal from STL 10
1st 9 yd pass to Boldin
2nd Fumble -2
3rd Sack -4
FG

Cards first and goal from the STL 9

1st Shipp 1 yd
2nd Sack -9
3rd INC PASS

They sure set a precedent for getting in the endzone on that last drive.

I think some of you need to go back and look at the starting 5 o-linemen from game to game it consistantly included names like wakefield, cantu and haayer. how can you possibly expect a line to be successful who #1 NEVER had their projected starting five play together, #2 changed the starting five every week and #3 included names in the starting lineup that dont belong in the NFL. The combination of getting healthy, adding steve loney as oline coach and adding players like latui and m.brown will should drastically improve their play, not to mention the depth that we have this year going 8 deep with servicable players (no cantu's or haayers).

The new Lindys NFL preview is out. It says Davis and Ross are expected to be the tackles again this year and neither distinguished themselves last season. (That may be the understatement of the day. Between false starts, holds, and personal fouls, they could play for the Rayduhs.)

We Are Who We Are

SInce the last thing we have to go by was our performance last season, our O-line is what it is (i.e. we had the worst running offense in the NFL if you go by average ground yards per gain, 1st downs gained on the ground, running TD's etc.)

The hope has to be that the combination of Loney, our new guys and returning injured guys will redefine who we are. But until then, "we are what we were."

Ok Last offseason what was done to correct our horrible O-line, 1. Signed a Vet, Oliver Rodd 2. Drafted a Oversized Guard E Brown 3. added a new coach Lindsay.

Ok this Off seaseon, 1 Signed Milford Brown (From the Texans!!) 2. Drafted a oversixed Guard Latui 3. Added a new coach Loney, I'm just not convinced enough was done to impreve this amazingly bad line, I hopw I'm wrong

Lindsay wasnt a new coach. Took over halfway through season 2004 I believe.

Elton Brown was a 4th rounder. Lutui was a 2nd rounder.

Signing a OL from the Texans isnt the negative as it would seem in your post. They are an excellent run blocking unit and Brown was the best of the bunch.

Comparing the 2 offseasons of OL changes cant be done as each one is completely different.

Just a question, What else could have been done to improve this OL? I wish there was more out their to help as well but looking back at the Ot free agent class of this past offseason, there wasnt much if any help to be had.

We dont even know if he can play at a starters level anymore. Is he in physical condition to play. Detriot isnt even trying him at OT, they are trying him as an OG, He is running with the 2nd string as of right now from latest reports I believe.

He is a pain in the locker room and I find his motivations to be suspect. He only came back becuase he is running out of money from his gambling addiction. He came back to football not becuase he wanted to but becuase he had to.

Plus the simple fact that Detroit over paid for him at a cap total of 4 Mill this year 2.2 of which is gauranteed.

Unfortunately, I agree. The OL is the biggest ?. It projects to be better. But "better" can still be bad. I am a 45 Yr fan. I have thought "its different this year" since 1988.

I said for the most part. At least we could have had a shot but ended up finishing the game the embarrassing way.

Huh? Most penalties have some adverse effect on the drive directly or indirectly. Kill the drive, make you change plays, puts more pressure on the play makers, etc.

No more embarrasing than Shipp getting stuffed again or Warner getting sacked on the last play. Nothing the Cards do should have been embarassing at that point considering their keystone kop routines the other 3 times they had been inside the 10. Without those 3 earlier fiascos Warner would have been taking a knee instead of a sack with 8 seconds to play.

I went through every play by play on nfl.com for last season. Not once did a Leonard Davis false start do any of those things with the exception of the Rams game and maybe one other. Most of them came on 1st or 2nd and long situations and several times the Cards picked up the first down on that series. I've posted more specific numbers here before.

If anything BIG's false start penalties actually helped contribute to the big numbers put up by the passing game.:D
