Cards Searching for Cornerback
The Arizona Cardinals worked out cornerbacks Robert Tate and Dyshod Carter on Thursday, February 26 at the team’s training facility.
Tate, a six-year NFL vet, was last with the Baltimore Ravens in 2002. He spent the first five years of his career playing for the Minnesota Vikings under Cardinals Head Coach Denny Green.
“Robert is one of those rare guys who has played both receiver and defensive back in the National Football League and we are looking for cornerbacks right now,” said Green. “We’ve got a couple of guys injured right now. We are hoping Duane Starks will be back and we are going to look at him when we get down to the workout at University of Miami this weekend. We’ll see how his rehab is going, but we just have a lot of injuries. (Coby) Rhinehart had a shoulder scoped so we are looking to pick up a couple of cornerbacks.”
Carter, originally signed as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Kansas State with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2001. He jumped back and forth between the Cleveland Browns practice squad and active roster before playing the final five games of the 2001 season with the Browns, mostly on special teams. He also spent training camp of 2002 with the Browns before being waived at the end of preseason and was signed to the New England Patriots practice squad in December of 2002. He spent the spring of 2002 playing for the Scottish Claymores and returned to the Patriots for the 2003 training camp and was released in late August.
With free agency looming, Green stated the team needs a corner, a pass rush/defensive end, and a “playmaker”, whether that is a running back or wide receiver. He also hopes to find someone who can return punts and relieve Pro Bowl receiver Anquan Boldin from that duty.
