We needed CB depth, and Henderson is familiar with him, so I'm for it.

Has this guy Miller even played more than a handful of snaps at CB in the last 3 seasons?

Looks like he was either hurt, out of the league, or just returning kicks for the majority of 2007-2009.

I'll be surprised if he makes the final cut. Looks like he was brought in for training camp competition to me.

That wouldn't help much IMO. If we brought Haggans inside it would be to play the WILB, not Hayes' SILB spot.

Hhhmm. You may be right but IMO Haggans is tough and could play well against the run. He would also be an upgrade in coverage over Hayes which isn't saying much.

If Walker isn't ready to step up into the SILB spot and Cody, Davis or Baggs are ready to take over at OLB then Haggans to SILB may be the best option.

I'm not talking about bringing him in on the weak side, I'd play him strong side. We may not have a ton of proven depth at WILB, but we've brought in guys specifically to play that position.

I think Haggans can play SILB as well as anyone currently on the roster, save for a healthy Hayes. That may not be a ringing endorsement, but I think it's truth.

We should know more about Walker this pre-season. Typically the SILB only plays 1-2 downs in any given 4 down set anyway. Unless the offense is playing hurry up. Which I expect teams to employ more often against us, because of our heavy substitutions.

I'm totally with you Wild BB ,but if we are'nt solid against the run as we know we can be as we started the season last year as the #1 team against the run till Hayes re-injured his back and tried to play with it.

We held Gore to 30 yards rushing in the first game.Hayes had two 10 tackle games at a position that our talented front three on "D" allow our ILB's to make. When our system is working right you're gonna have to try and throw on us and then we start bringing everyone from everywhere.

We've added maybe a touch of speed from the outside with Porter and hopefully more mass up front on "D" with Williams, and some extra trackdown speed sideline to sideline with Washington.Schemes GALORE!

I don't think he has the build or skillset to manage that position very well.

Agree to disagree, then. We just see it different.

I don't think he'd set the world on fire there, but I think he might play it better than Beisel or whomever we have penciled in at #2.

Now that goes without saying.I really wonder if Walker is gonna bring a REAL challenge this year.

Never has a starting spot at such a KEY SPOT on our defense(that should easily lead to leading the team in tackles).Hayes led the ream in tackles for 4 weeks till he got passed by Dansby who was'nt really lighting it up either.Hayes was playing injured and in pain and hurting the team.

Our defense sets up our two ILB's to post what neither man has done what we SHOULD have racked up at that position.Thats why Walker should see this as a shot of a lifetime! Monty isn't even close to being in our final 2 man rotation.Production at this spot from a man like LB Patrick Willis would end up with well over 200 tackles.

You'll call me a Homer but the rams second rounder in James Lauranitus THE (OSU) is nothing spectacular but is so steady every down.He would be as quiet as Hayes is as he would pile up the tackles.

If Walker can't be starting over Monty at even this early point in OTA's and first rookie mini-camp then I have my concerns with who the coaches see as our most talented to start while Hayes sits.:(

Forgive me for ruining this thread and turning it into a two position thread.CB & SILB.Call it Looking For A cheaper Nickel And A Thumper Too!

Many cuts will come from teams this year and I see us finally getting a true Thumper of the Veteran variety,BUT it will come Very close to the start of the season. The final cuts will flush out our Season starter.Unless Hayes can last to start the season.I have very serious doubts.Every shoulder Gerald puts into a blocker or runningback will contract his vertibral column and cause major pain to any disc that is Bulging or heading for Herniation.GOD BLESS Gerald.:):bang:

I agree. This signing is mystifying simply because he's rarely done anything in the NFL as a CB. Didn't we just draft 2 guys (Roberts & Calvin) to handle PR duties? LSH is a solid KR also. Even though I don't know much about him the CB from the Lions would make more since as an extra CB. Puzzling...:bang:

Aside from returning kicks does he also play on coverage teams too? The more athletes we have on special teams the better. If he can manage to be our #4 CB even better.

Late to the discussion as usual. But in my defense I thought this was a thread about signing Justin Miller, so I didn't pay it any attention... :billthecat:

Anyway, regarding Gerald Hayes, I agree with Doug; he speaks from experience.

Hayes will not last long once the season starts. I wish it could be otherwise but I simply can't see how it will be. As an average man with a disc problem you might feel fine one day and can hardly walk the next, and not even know what aggravated it.

But, as Doug stated, when you are involved with the collisions that occur at ILB it is only a matter of time; a short time; before the pain will limit your effectiveness.

Monty Beisel is not going to cut it. We can hope that Reggie Walker is ready to step up, but that's doubtful.

So agreeing with Pariah, given the depth the team now has at OLB, the best option may be to have Haggans move in to SILB.

I am more concerned about the SILB position than I am about CB, and I am plenty worried about that... :(

The other option for an ILB is trading Deuce Lutui to a team that has depth at ILB and needs a starting OG.

With the niners signing James, Sando is speculating that it may signal the release of Dre Bly. I know he is past his prime but it seems he would be an okay addition.
