With starting quarterback Kurt Warner sidelined by a groin injury, the struggling Arizona Cardinals have reached agreement in principle with free agent signal-caller Rohan Davey, a three-year veteran released by the New England Patriots last month.

There remain a few contract details to be finalized but those are considered academic and Davey, who was en route to Phoenix on Tuesday, will sign a one-year deal. Agent Joel Segal spent much of Tuesday morning on the phone with Cards officials. The financial details of the contract were not immediately available, but the deal is likely for the league minimum for a three-year veteran, prorated over the balance of the season.

Arizona acted quickly to contact Davey, who was scheduled to work out for the Miami Dolphins, and Nick Saban, his former college coach at LSU, later this week. Davey had a workout in Houston earlier this month and the Denver Broncos also indicated interest in the former LSU starter.

Warner was injured in Sunday's loss at Seattle and coach Dennis Green acknowledged on Monday that the Cardinals' starter probably would miss more than just one week. Josh McCown, who replaced Warner on Sunday and who started 13 games for the Cardinals in '04, will get the nod against San Francisco this weekend. The other quarterback currently on the roster is second-year veteran John Navarre.

The winless Cardinals face the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night in Mexico City, the first-ever NFL regular-season game to be played outside the United States.

Once viewed as a potential future starter, and a player of estimable physical skills, quarterback Davey was waived by the Patriots after New England opted to elevate Doug Flutie to the No. 2 spot on the depth chart and to retain rookie Matt Cassel, a seventh-round draft choice from Southern California who played well in the preseason.

Before releasing Davey, the Patriots attempted to trade him, but no teams wanted to give up anything in return, since they sensed he was going to be waived.

Davey, 27, was a fourth-round pick of the Patriots in the 2002 draft but, in his three seasons with the team, appeared in just seven games. He completed eight of 19 passes for 88 yards and spent all last season as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart.

Two years ago, Davey was named as the top offensive player in NFL Europe. At 6-feet-2 and 245 pounds, he has nice size and a good enough arm.

Given the unsettled situation in Arizona, where Warner and McCown are both working on one-year contracts, going to the Cardinals could be a good move for Davey's career. If the Arizona staff likes what it sees of him in 2005, the Cardinals could attempt to sign him to an extension later in the season, perhaps by dangling the possibility that he would have a chance to compete for the starting job next summer.

Don't think Davey is the answer, but sometimes change is good. Who gets cut so he can be signed to the roster?

good luck w/this ........................... i know the QB market is thin and your WR corp can help anyone look good ... but w/ a struggling OL you'd be better off sticking with McCown and then running warner

I don't see davey as much of a QB ... strong armed, but inaccurate and prone to dumb errors

so who gets the axe when all 4 QBs are healthy?

YES!!!! I wanted him on draft day over McCown!! START HIM NOW!!!!!!

Yeah I'm sure the team would love that. It is clear that none of the Qb's on the roster are the Qb's of the future, but nothing spells disaster like starting someone who doesn't even know the playbook.

Me too! I was at the Senior Bowl practices when Davey was there...

He has a big arm...just like Green likes.

I don't see 4 Qb's on the active roster, so I would bet McCown or Navarre go on IR with a mysterious injury. Is the NFL turning into the NBA?

Or Denny has seen enough of McCown (like the rest of us) and decides to cut him loose.

Good move. I think Rowan is better than any QB on our roster not named Kurt.

We need a DT not another QB! What's going on out there?

would it be possible to keep Navarre as an emergency QB, so he doesn't count against the # of players dressed and releasing someone else from the 53 man roster?!

Are there any DT's or MLB's or OL, other than Ross (I have to feed my family) Verba, out there that would be an upgrade?

QB play is horrid (other than Warner).

I would still sign Verba, lol.

Right. Emergency QB = 3rd QB. 54th player. We now have 4 QBs. One will have to go or someone else on the team needs to be cut/IR.

Big, strong pocket passer with great physical skills. Quick setting up to deliver the ball, throws with a fluid, over-the-top delivery, displaying poise and patience in the pocket. Immediately gets the pass off, releases the ball with a flick of the wrist and his throws have good velocity. Drives the ball downfield, puts air under his deep passes and zips the outs. Sells his play-action passes, does not panic as the pocket collapses around him and steps up to avoid the rush or big enough that he'll withstand defenders and make the throw with opponents draped on him. Gets outside the pocket making plays on the move, losing nothing on his passes. Takes what the defense gives him, leads receivers and can also thread the needle. Scans the field, finds the open wideout and for the most part does not force his throws or make bad decisions. Does not properly follow through over his top foot causing many of his throws to be high of the mark. Also falls out of his throws which adversely affects his accuracy. Not quick setting up and throwing off a three step drop, not always on the same page as his receivers nor is he an elusive signal caller that can avoid the rush. Injuries, which caused him to miss time, have slowed his development and he's still more of an arm thrower than a true passer. Seemingly has a good head for the position and definitely has the athletic skills to flourish at the next level but his inability to stay healthy may knock him out of the first day. Early Fourth Round.

He's perfect! :biglaugh:

Rowan Davey who couldn't beat out a 42 year old or a 7th. round pick who did nothing more than mop up in College, is now the answer to our QB woes, to some... that's just too...

don't know a darn thing about him, but this is the kind of move that other teams make and all of a sudden something clicks, he turns out to be the right person at the right time,
and the whole team takes off, someday something like that is gonna happen for us, perhaps todays the day :)

For what it's worth, I like his physical skills and they are much better suited for Denny's style of offense.

I am sure people were saying the same thing about Kurt Warner before the injury to Trent Green. Hey, our back-up QB is a former grocery bag boy and arena football player, lol!

Things can happen...

So of all the suggestions on this board this year the one time they listen is Rohan Davey?

That said, I'm happy, he's got an arm, he's likely not going to change our season but he has potential still and sitting behind Brady he might have learned a thing or 3.

Cassell backed up Carson Palmer and then Matt Leinart at USC, not like he was the backup at SMU or something. :D

I agree it's a shot in the dark, but he does have a very strong arm. Green has gotten great play out of big arm QB's his whole coaching career.

Not like we chose to sign Davey over a great DT or OL so it's worth a look.
